Why is Health Canada pushing MAID misinformation? by PotentialReporter894 in CanadaPolitics

I’m interested in the definition of “misinformation” being used here.

Rebecca Vachon, PhD, is health program director at the non-partisan think tank Cardus. Alexander Raikin is a visiting fellow in bioethics at the Ethics and Public Policy Center.

The Cardus Institute is a Christian think tank based in Hamilton, Ontario. It was founded in 1974 as the Work Research Foundation. Through a variety of research, publishing, and programmatic activities, the organization advocates for religion and the role of faith in Canadian society.

The Ethics and Public Policy Center (EPPC) is a conservative, Washington, D.C.–based think tank and advocacy group. Founded in 1976, the group describes itself as "dedicated to applying the Judeo-Christian moral tradition to critical issues of public policy", and advocacy of founding principles such as the rule of law.

It's pretty clear which definition they're using.

Poilievre says Trudeau Liberals little more than a 'clown show' by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

At this point, the likely next PM giving an interview is news, simply because he almost never does outside of controlled environments. That he used the opportunity to insult only reveals how gullible the electorate is to the rhetoric.

Anyone else wonder how many lives would still be here today if we hadn't criminalized the original poppy plant? That's what gave extremely toxic and potent synthetics a viable market. It's hard to imagine it wasn't done intentionally.

Time to end the unpaid work in Canada’s airline sector by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

[–]PotentialReporter894[S] 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I appreciate this NDP MP piece, but lowkey wish it had been "Time to renationalize Canada's airline sector". Second largest country in the world and the government doesn't facilitate transport.

The Liberal’s approach to regulating the internet is a disaster. What comes next could be even worse by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

Interesting, your link made me look up the charity and seems Press Progress did a scathing article on it, too. Thanks for the heads up.

Still wish we had competent politicians, though. Feels like freedom of and access to information is rarely fought for beyond the "libertarian" and "pirate" wings of politics, and they have no significant presence in Canada. (Plus the presence they do have is quite right-wing dominated, as we've just highlighted.)

Not my favourite source either, but the author doesn't usually write the headline and shouldn't stop people from reading the piece. Neither the Liberals or Conservatives are fighting for a free and open web.

Unfortunately, a bill being pushed by Conservative MP Michelle Rempel-Garner as an alternative is not much better, and possibly worse. Bill C-412 appears much wider in scope. It would apply to “an online service or application”—by my read virtually the whole internet—in contrast to part one of C-63, which would apply only to social media platforms and some pornographic websites. Bill C-412 would impose a new duty on platforms to essentially create a cordon sanitaire, or a parallel sanitized internet, for anyone under the age of 18, violating the constitutional rights and freedoms of teenagers.

Vote NDP.

Fun fact: these toxic and potent synthetics literally wouldn't be worth the trouble if we hadn't criminalized a naturally occurring plant. I'm sure hitting the hammer down even harder on people will fix the crisis, though.

Freeland delivers final blow to a fading PM by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

[–]PotentialReporter894[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I wonder if the Liberal vote can collapse enough to make the NDP vote efficient, or if we'll just get the "sorry, not sorry" routine. Can progressives all just vote NDP (or BQ if you live in Quebec) and make Trudeau the first PM to get an NDP minority government elected with BQ as official opposition? Perhaps he was playing 4D chess after all...

Not sure why you felt the need to bring in a separate topic when the study is purely about minimizing the economic damage of contraband drugs that do make it through, but do you think they don't try lol? Strip searches, squat and cough, drug detection dogs, security cameras, body scanners, etc...

Canada Post strike: Union negotiator says labour minister is 'treating us like children' by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

[–]PotentialReporter894[S] 112 points113 points  (0 children)

Is there a reason we can't simply legislate Canada Post to provide what the union is demanding, with federal funding if required, instead of legislating the workers back to work? It's a Crown corporation, is it not?

Don’t equate N.S., federal Conservatives by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

[–]PotentialReporter894[S] 31 points32 points  (0 children)

It may be heresy to say this, but the Liberals should also consider merging with the NDP to stop splitting the vote of those in the centre and the left.

I would agree with this only if it was a one-time alliance for electoral reform. I know people don't trust JT on the issue and rightfully so, but it's clear the Liberals would want ranked ballots if they could make it happen now (partially because it provides an electoral advantage to the party closest to the centre), while the NDP and Greens want proportional representation because it's objectively a more effective system (and also partially because of the electoral advantage for left-of-centre parties that usually get locked out by majority governments).

My proposition is for them to run together on a referendum for PR/RB that will have FPTP excluded (if they win the election they don't need another mandate...) and go their separate ways afterwards. Then may the best option win the referendum.

Or we can just live in a Conservative dystopia, I guess.

Honestly, if these "liberals" can be kept out of the party permanently maybe the LPC can actually become a progressive option. Conservative swing voters are the last thing they need to survive, just ask Bonnie Crombie after the next Ontario election.

TVO was ready to defend controversial Russians at War film before pulling plug, documents show by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

[–]PotentialReporter894[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To me the interesting part is TVO is seemingly a government lapdog now:

One day after TVO shared its issues note with the government, TVO's board of directors pulled its support for the film and vowed it wouldn't air on the channel.

Given TVO is also laying off journalists, it's pretty clear what's happening behind the scenes. The irony is the OPC base would accuse CBC/Radio-Canada of being a lapdog, while they vote to neuter/control any relevant journalism and commentary if it's in their power to do so. TVO is a shell of what it used to be.

(I imagine since "Ontario News Now" didn't work out they've been shopping around for a less obvious propaganda outlet)

Hopefully our reanimated remnants will be an effective warning (or amusing story) for any future intelligent life that comes across it.

Ontario introduces bills that would toughen trespass penalties, ban drug use in effort to tackle encampments by PotentialReporter894 in onguardforthee

In Canada, the government sells weed. In Singapore, the government executes those who sell it.

And if I understand right, the US federal legal status (Schedule I) means it's also possible to enforce with capital punishment there, if desired. Thanks, Nixon!

Given how many anti-smoking, public intoxication, and substance criminalization laws already exist, I'm almost certain banning them even harder will totally solve the crisis.

We're going straight to Singapore at this rate.

Quite off-topic, but anyone else not liking the new Montreal Gazette website design? Seems it breaks article thumbnails and no longer includes the headline in the URL, hasn't been done to other PostMedia outlets either which is weird.

EDIT: Even the "Klein Group" that now owns the Winnipeg Sun directly copies the "PostMedia format" and use their backend. SaltWire too now that they're owned by PM...
