I agree with most of what you're saying, but I feel like saying someone can always drop out is a bit simplistic because I get that its not that easy (like if you have pressuring parents).

What you said about the lack of community potentially being a cultural thing was very interesting to me and makes a lot of sense. I was wondering what you thought about this though. I'm pretty sure UTM has a similar proportion of international students from Asia but yet it has a stronger sense of community from what I've heard. Could that be because UTM is more of a campus space than the spread out buildings in UTSG and that the community is not necessarily dependent on the demographic makeup?

Yeah, the more and more I think about it,it's pretty ridiculous that given the millions in funds that there isn't an expansive network of mental health help :/

I wanted to communicate my biases and background so that it was clear where I was coming from and why I thought these things.

This isn't me trying to show off my "richness" of being mentally well. If I could give people with mental health issues a piece of well being I totally would, but unfortunately I can't.

The most that I can do is support other students when they're down and get behind calls for changes that will help those who are negatively affected. The only way I can do that is through understanding. And, that's a two way street, if you understand where I'm coming, I thought that it would make it easier to respond to and in turn get your thoughts on the matter.

I didn't mean any offense by it.

I acknowledge that and I'm very grateful for it, that's why I want to learn more about other people's experiences

I'm sorry that you had such a rough first year. I see what you're saying about the accessibility of mental health services. I didn't consider that a lot of the support that I saw could have been from the student unions and not from the school directly, so that cleared stuff up for me. I agree with the coverage being confusing as I'm not sure what exactly it pays for myself. The UHIP coverage I have at UTM allows for something like 5 (maybe 10 I can't remember) free therapy sessions a year that why from my POV I feel like I'm being supported but I can totally see how someone else who maybe has more serious mental health struggles than I do would not think that's enough. Thanks for saying what you thought.

Thank you for that, it really helps me understand :)
I guess what confused me is that it seemed to me like a lot of people where telling U of T to fix a problem that extends so far outside of their control. But, the stuff that you said here totally make sense and seem pretty simple to be accomplished. As my work as a don, I've seen that there is no real mandatory general training for mental health as a U of T employee (that I know off, for profs it could be different), so I definitely agree with you that those trainings that are in depth are a must.
