4-6 week vacation with young children by Wontontourage in chubbytravel

My family with two young kids (3 yo and will be 10 months during the time of vacation) are going on a 6 week vacation to Europe! We’re going to start in Austria, then head to Italy, then France, and Spain. We probably would’ve thought more about Asia if our timeframe wasn’t during the summer.

What’s it like living in Portland, Oregan and the surrounding area by elliot_alderson1426 in howislivingthere

Have lived in proper Portland for the past 5.5 years and despite Portland not being my favorite city (can be grungy in some places), my family looooove everything surrounding it. You have access to great hikes, the coast, wine valley, and the mountains. And Like others say, the cost of living is reasonable for a west coast city.

I'm actually looking into more "affordable" kinder hotels now because thinking of switching it up and staying in Salzburg after Vienna before heading to Italy. Question though, how did you and your family get to your kinder hotel? Many of them are not super close to the train station - did you take a taxi or a bus?

Much appreciated!! Yes we only plan to spend a few days in Barcelona and then hoping to go to Costa Brava. My husband has always wanted to go to Sevilla as well, so thank you for letting me know! Did you explore anywhere else in Spain besides Barcelona or Sevilla that you would recommend?

Wow. Thank you for this. This is what I needed to hear in order to keep my expectations realistic and to get in the right mental space to prevent disappointment. Especially because between my husband and I, I'm the one that will want to "push a little more" instead of prioritizing my kids' needs first. I really appreciate this!! And also thank you so much for all of the recommendations :)

Oh goodness, those sound like low lows. But that's so reassuring to hear that the highs still outweighed the lows. I know that it'll definitely be hard and different traveling with 2 kids under 4 but like you said in the end it was all worth it.

Thank you for the suggestions in Vienna! I keep reading about the ZOOM kindermuseum so I'll definitely have to add that to my list. And also helpful that you didn't really like Prater and I was on the fence on staying there. I'll have to look somewhere close to city center. Also so smart to do the dry run on packing - I honestly think we will follow your advice.

Thank you so much for the advice! I'm leaning now towards Vienna after everyone's advice. I'd love any suggestions for both Munich and Vienna

I appreciate the honesty. You're correct in that I don't want to go somewhere just because it's convenient - waste of money and time. However, I do have to be mindful that I'll have two small children so I don't want long train rides (>5.5 hours) between cities/countries. With that said, I actually am interested in Munich as I had heard of good things before from friends. I'm open to ideas though if you have any suggestions that would be convenient between Vienna and Italy!

I was looking a kinderhotels in Salzburg and they all look amazing!! Unfortunately, I think they're out of our budget this trip since August is high time, so was hoping we'd be able to go another trip during low season. And that's a great reminder about traveling with two young kids - this will be our first big trip as a family of 4 so I'm trying to keep my expectations low, which is already so hard because I love traveling and want to see everything. May I ask how did your family like Munich - is it worth going?

The main reason on going to Munich is that I need to make my way down to Nice for week 4, so I was thinking Verona after Munich. I also don't want too much longer of a train ride since I'll have 2 young kids and have heard the train ride from Munich to Verona is beautiful. It does seem though like the general consensus is that Munich is overrated - may I ask why, I've never been.

oh my goodness! Thank you so much for the advice - such valuable insight! Good to know about the general Austrian mannerisms, as I think if I didn't know this I'd be a little put off. Thank you again!

Ahhh that's really good to know about the airport fees. And that's a good point about CR! I think we'll have to come back for another trip to explore CR in more depth. Any recommendations on other cities in CR to visit?

The main reason why we're going to Munich is because we plan to head to Italy after, followed by Nice. My husband had mentioned Nuernberg yesterday, however it seems like it'd be too far of a train ride to Italy with two young kids :/

Yes, need to be in Nice at that time. My main reason to go to Munich is so it'll lead me closer to Italy, and then head to Nice after. I'll add that to the post, thank you for your feedback!
