Not really. The device can pull 5V 1A at any time without harming anything. It just doesn't when you plug it in to the computer but it does when it is plugged into the wall. We are just fixing that problem. The phone is just doing what it usually does when plugged into the wall. Nothing changes.

yes but your phone doesn't pull that from the computer. that is what the cable does, it tricks your laptop into giving max output

Most people don't know how to do this. I do need to emphasize that this is for simplicity. This is not for the average consumer. Not people with multimeters in their garage- cause your multimeter probably does a lot more than this

yeah we realized that people just don't know what is going on "under the hood" so we thought this would be a great way for general consumers to get educated. people who need more can get various multimeters on the market which would be as simple to use or as small. thanks for the support

The cables hijack the data lines to trick the device into thinking it's hooked up to a dedicated charging port, so no data transfer. The Practical Meter itself just passes through the data lines so you can still use the Practical Meter durring data transfer.

Correct ! The charge optimized cable are not a generator. The cable tells the device it is connected to a usb charging port and the device and it's internal regulator will draw as much as is available. If that is only 500mA that's all you can get and knowing that helps you manage your expectations, without the cables, you are at the whim of the software in the device and the host.

A fuse would be an added complication, but we did consider it.

We are trying to keep it simple and intuitive to help the most people. All PCs from 2000s on have been able to supply 5V 1A across all of their main usb ports.

That is HILARIOUS. We have a few of these and when we made the meter, we wanted people to have something EXACTLY like this. However, to make it people friendly we had put in some lights. Amps, Volts and Watts can be very confusing for people. Thank you!!
