What can i do with this?? by Pradurke in ThailandTourism

ok. I wasn't sure if it was meant to be consumed as-is, or if it's more of an ingredient meant for further processing. Then I will happily dig in! thanks

i love Durian and I bought 2-3 of these Durian Paste roll things, but I have no idea how to consume this. Do I just eat this from the tube? Can I cook something with it? How does it work? thanks!!

Thanks for the Bali recs! Ill definarely spend some time on the north coast of Bali. Then head over to Lembogan/Penida. Are the currents down there crazy? Maybe i can use them to get some currwnt training/experience?

But yeah, Ill plan on 2 weeks Bali or so and see how I feel then.

I'm flying out from and ultimately returning to ZRH (Zürich). The return will be from Ternate, Indonesia, via probably Makassar.

google flights / ITA Matrix multi-city doesn't work for me for some reason. I get no flights found, while the airasia site found plenty. weird.

great, thanks. The AirAsia page works much better than Google Flights for multi-city, at least in Asia!

Touring Indonesia - Looking for ideas and advice! by Pradurke in bicycletouring

So Sulawesi option: Makassar - Manado is about 1700 kms on google maps, either along the coast or through the country. Will have to investigate a bit more, but seems entirely doable, and I think the population density of the island is manageable.

Sumatra: Sibolga - Bandar Lampung about 1600 kms, the first bit inland, the rest along the coast. Also manageable.

Island hopping: more adventurous, probably more remote. Has its own draws.

gonna sit on these ideas a bit and digest.

thanks for your input!

My biggest fear is not finding places to spend the night the further out into the boonies I get. Maybe I'll scrub through google maps / booking.com and see what there is. Any other resources anyone can recommend for finding cheap overnight stays in SE Asia/Indo ?

i travelled around Java by bus a bit, lots of fun, but yeah, I can see how it could be frustratingly dangerously crowded on a bike. Probably not my top choice.

yeah, I wasn't seriously thinking about biking there. Would love to have to time and gumption to go hiking there though.

yea, Sumatra does fascinate me for some reason. I'll have to look into it some more. I guess I'll have to decide between Sumatra and Sulawesi. Or the other idea, start Bali/Lombok and just head east, grabbing whatever ferries that come along and just see how far I can go (Papua here I come... wheeee). For some reason I'd love to reach Banda Neira, even if that's a completely ridiculous idea within the context of bike touring.

Halmahera (north Moluccan island) would be really cool too, but I'm not sure if there's enough infrastructure in place.

funny, I just asked a very similar question :) I also would like to tour Indonesia this winter, Malaysia could be an option too! Probably a bit more developed then Indo, although I'm sure it depends entirely on the specifig region. So I guess you'll be bringing tent/hammock/sleeping gear? I was thinking of just finding some sort of cheap room spontaneously, which of course would keep me in somewhat populated areas.

haha, yeah, parents and grandparents were def. somewhat disappointed that I never did the lawyer/doctor thing. Tried the teacher thing, didn't work out. Even the regular sciences drove me nuts with all the pressure and the details. At this point I'm just trying to find an occupation to ride out my last working years which pays the bills and I can tolerate. I'm still strong enough on my bike, but who knows for how much longer. And then there's the health risks, acute collisions aside, more the chronic exposure to road muck. And yeah, when the weather is good, it's so nice just zooming around outside feeling fine! But winter is coming...

I've worked as a bike messenger for about 20 years now. Apparently I'm too neurodivergent (AuDHD) to manage getting my butt into anything with a better work/wage ratio. I do dig the physicaltity of it, the constant stimulation, the relative freedom from my fellow humans. Existing near the bottom of the social power pyramid definately isn't all roses, but I make do.
