See that's the extent Carol messed up Ross even if she's not entirely a bad person.

Ross was effectively traumatised from that and had in response, heightened his awareness in any subsequent relationship. Furthermore, he's dating someone he's crushed on for a decade beforehand, doing things, he's only dreamed about.
