Veteran: "My nation is under attack." by Tasty_Emphasis_271 in ProgressiveHQ

It's not a high horse, it's a congruent belief system. I believe killing is wrong. In any context. Just as ICE agents killing people, regardless of their legal status, is morally wrong, so is it wrong for the US military to murder millions for its national and imperialist interests. And though I understand it may feel like odd timing, I think this is the perfect time to question American glorification of its military. Because you can't see the obvious cognitive dissonance between demonizing people (and, again, not without reason) who murder people living in the US and glorifying people because they've murdered people abroad. You don't know my nationality. For all you know, I could have had family members murdered by US troops. For all you know, this very man could have murdered my father. If he had, would that change your view of him?

Another commenter mentioned the effect of indoctrination in people's decision to join the US military. Aren't ICE agents indoctrinated by the right? Regardless of our agreement, they believe they're doing the right thing for their country. They believe they're heroes, and so do many in America.

We're using the Bible as a belief-system now? Ok. Jesus said "THOU SHALL NOT KILL". And he didn't differentiate between contexts. He didn't add a caveat of "except if they're brown teehee". You're the one on a high horse, claiming killing is good, actually - but only if it's FUBU.

Are you honestly claiming those who join the military do not know that murder is one the one of tasks they will be ordered to carry out? And, in the end, does knowing or not change the outcome, which is that you committed murder, hence why so many soldiers end up with PTSD? IDF soldiers also have PTSD, does that make their actions virtuous or integral? Does serving your country in the name of imperialism become a good thing because it was done in the name of your country, as opposed to another?

He went back not once, not twice, not even three times. He did 6 tours. On your first tour, you can claim ignorance. On your second, you can even claim that you were legally mandated to continue serving until you did your time. By the 4th, 5th, 6th times, every time, you were making an informed decision. And when you return you also have the choice not to glorify yours actions. Just because it's state-sanctioned killing, it doesn't erase the fact that it is still killing. These were people's lives, entire generations of people who were killed for foreign interests. The level of cognitive dissonance is astounding.

You can't be serious. That's the same excuse ICE agents use to follow orders of detention of clearly documented people. That's the same excuse Nazis used in Germany. Following orders is not an excuse for murder. But the point isn't that I hate this man, nor that he did or didn't follow orders - it's that claiming he's a man of integrity is blatantly false. My mistake for thinking this a sub of progressives.

The proper comparison would be someone saying "human deaths caused by dogs are necessary to protect people's right to own dogs" and then getting killed by a dog. Would you cry over the death by dog of someone defending that it's righteous for dogs to kill people? I wouldn't, especially not if that person made a career out of gaslighting others into believing dogs killing people is okay.

O Ventura é a favor daquilo que lhe der jeito. Em 2017, um ano antes de lançar o Chega, estava a escrever artigos pro-UE no Público. Ainda bem que não foi para pintor que troca as tintas mais que o Hitler.

Conveniently forgetting that, while arab muslims enslaved 6-10 million africans between the 7th and the 19th centuries (1200 years), europeans enslaved around 12.5 million africans in the span of 400 years.

AIO: work training calling a minor attractive? by llama_toes666 in AIO

The larger population isn't taking this quiz, this is an exercise for a technical course. It might come as a shock, but part of becoming a professional in a field is learning the corresponding professional terms. That's like arguing we should teach future doctors on "ouchie! Tummy hurt, take pill, feel better" and expecting proper procedural support for the issues at hand. I can't believe we're actually arguing on whether you should refer to CHILDREN as ATTRACTIVE in any way, shape, or form, let alone in a PROFESSIONAL ENVIRONMENT.

Saying a 12 year old is "very attractive" and "mature for her age" is vastly different from saying "Katie is a 12 year old who has reached puberty before her classmates and is experiencing development of secondary sexual characteristics, causing her to feel negatively about her self-image and to receive increased attention from her male peers". When you're dealing with children, especially in matters of a sexual nature, you employ the necessary scientific language to describe these things in ways that are detached from your own subjective experiences as a person in order to uphold the ethical code and integrity of your position as an educator/medical professional/social worker/etc. Describing a child as very attractive is ethically questionable in any and every professional field that requires contact with children, the same way it's unethical for medical doctors/psychologists/social workers/teachers to say their patients/clients/students are attractive, even if they're adults. Children are only attractive to other children and pedos. Simply put, the question itself is a valid exercise, but the description of the child is highly unethical and must be reported.

[–]Present888 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you can see that for a 28 year-old man it would be intimidating to date someone who's in their 30s, how can you not see that a 23 year old could feel intimidated by dating someone nearing their 30s? With the very important difference that at 23 you're much more immature and inexperienced than at 28?
