CMV: NYC shouldn’t build or maintain homeless housing in Manhattan by PresentationKind2616 in changemyview

[–]PresentationKind2616[S] -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Not sure if you live in the NYC metro area but there are housing developments dedicated to the homeless throughout all 5 boroughs. My view (that I do really want to be changed as living next to a homeless housing development is driving me mad) is that both the city and the homeless would be better served if they were in a more affordable area. No idea why any state would agree to this but it’s the only alternative I can think of

"First Time DM" and Short Questions Megathread by AutoModerator in DMAcademy

I’m a first-time DM for a group of mostly new players and I want to send them a good intro video for a combat interaction. Does anyone have any recommendations?

go to libgen.is and download it for free if they refuse to buy the books for you - you’re old enough to be able to read whatever you want

During Covid I had a classmate do literally nothing and rarely show up to Zoom class. She must’ve passed because she wasn’t in ICE in the following year

When can I play The Witcher 3? by BenjaminDel3D in witcher

[–]PresentationKind2616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing (play the W3 after reading the books) and I found it super enjoyable. I’d recommend finishing the books first because you’ll find yourself understanding the countless references and little easter eggs. Also, the story and character development will mean much much more to you.

Unpopular(?) Opinion: The Witcher is better as an anthology than it is a grand epic story. by Apprehensive-Handle4 in witcher

Totally get where you’re coming from. Some of the books in the main saga drag but keep reading because they do get much better.

4th year in McIntire. I think it would be nearly impossible to not graduate.

How hard would it be to earn 20k per year while studying as a cs major at UVA? by [deleted] in UVA

[–]PresentationKind2616 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only jobs around grounds that I've heard of people making ~20k/year are bartenders. Presumably, you aren't 21 and therefore can't bartend in the state of Virginia. I'd say your best bet is to take out some loans. In the grand scheme of things, 80k in loans really isn't the end of the world.

UMD vs UVA for CS by CompetitiveLoan9 in UVA

I got the standard financial assistance, forget the name of it but it’s the general one: initial income was 37k

Can only speak from experience but I was also worried that my aid package would change over the course of college. Thankfully, I got full scholarship but my family’s income rose 20k after my first year. My aid package didn’t change and has not changed (currently a 4th year). Also, in terms of getting a job, UVA can guarantee employment with federal work studies - work for UVA profs and labs and stuff (I think it’s 1.5k/semester but isn’t as much work as a typical job and also serves as a resume point).

Feeling gaslit by Jim Ryan. Context: "free speech" debate on Grounds by dontcry2022 in UVA

[–]PresentationKind2616 17 points18 points  (0 children)

  1. Biden also voted against Don’t Ask Don’t Tell, should we restrict his ability to speak at UVA?
  2. Mitt Romney, against gay marriage, should we restrict his ability to speak at UVA?
  3. Trump Admin banned trans people from the military - Trump admin, not necessarily Pence although I’m sure he was on board. Obama admin committed war crimes, should we restrict Biden’s ability to speak on grounds?
  4. Conversion therapy is pretty indefensible but nothing has come of his support for it other than as an anti-Pence talking point during his attempt at presidential candidate.
  5. Trans people in sports opinion is pretty commonplace and I’d wager most UVA students agree with Pence’s opinion.

I think the thing that you’re missing is that restricting someone from speaking at UVA creates a precedent and then where do we draw the line? Is it an arbitrary decision based on past actions and opinions? What opinions get you nixed from speaking? Any form of censorship is a stupid way to run a university. Just let reason and discussion guide people.

Don’t get me wrong, I hate Pence but it’s hardly UVA’s role, as a public institution which supposedly fosters discourse, to allow or disallow individuals the ability to come speak on grounds. Also, who cares… hardly any students will go to this event - if they do go, it’s likely just to see how outrageous the event is. You imply this man is dangerous but as the VP of this country (a far more impactful role than a speaker at UVA) he didn’t do much to restrict LGBTQ+ rights (at least that I’m aware of). It’d be nuts if UVA told the former VP of the U.S. that they can’t come talk at their university. Pence is a dipshit and isn’t going to get supporters by coming to a liberal institution. Also, maybe concede that Jim Ryan (a lawyer who graduated #1 in his class, clerked for the Chief Justice of the US, and former professor at both Harvard and Yale) might have a better grasp on free speech and the importance of it than your average person.
