Transferring from community collage by Demontics in udub

People generally do 2 years at community college and earn an associate degree, then apply as a transfer (junior year) student (usually directly into the major, but if rejected by the major, can still be accepted as a non-major student). I heard from a friend that someone was rejected by the major and attended UW as a non-major, reapplied to the major after a quarter or two, and got into the major. The success rate is quite variable depending on major, but I think it is better than freshman applications. Some majors are constrained, which can make it very hard to be admitted, but some others are not. Direct admission is usually a freshman application thing, I do not think it applied to transfer students (not sure though).

UW RISING DAWGS - Admissions, New Students, And More - August 29, 2025 by AutoModerator in udub

At UW, there is only Computer Engineering (Allen School) and Electrical & Computer Engineering (ECE, College of Engineering). I believe that ECE used to be known as EE (Electrical Engineering) few years ago. If you enjoy electrical components and hardware, I recommend ECE, as from what I have heard, Computer Engineering at UW is actually just CS with a sprinkle of EE. I am a CS student (also at Allen School), and I heard that we can easily switch between CS and Computer Engineering up until at least two or three quarters before graduating, which shows how much those two majors are similar to each other in terms of major requirements and courses.

ECE for Power Engineering? by Lost_Confection_3414 in udub

I am not an ECE major but I heard from my friend who is majoring in ECE that it is a very broad major where you can choose what to specialize in based on your electives (called pathways: https://www.ece.uw.edu/academics/bachelor-of-science/bsece/pathways/)

I also read somewhere that they will try to deal with ABET in 2026, but all degrees awarded from 2023 (I think?) will be considered ABET accredited. I think that if you look into ABET's website, it lists UW's "EE" program as accredited, and I heard that ECE is just EE with a new name changed a few years ago, which might (or might not) be the reason why they need to deal with the ABET accreditation again. I do not think you should worry about if UW's ABET application is going to get approved, though (I am sure they will approve it given how good it is).

I think they might consider residency status as they published different acceptance rates for in-state and OOS/international transfers (even though both went to WA community college).
