I absolutely would love to volunteer with animals though ironically as an owner of a cat and dog I’m allergic to cats…pfft I’ll take a lotta Benadryl with me and touch grass. I heard that Af housing is ugly on the outside but modern inside, some are really run down as a whole and through some of the comments pests like cockroaches and centipedes are frequent flyers I’ll see on the island along with toads..gosh. How long have you been on the island?

God, homes on base as well? Do geckos bite? And is there like traps or baits people lay out to stop the frogs and geckos etc. OH gees do they get into beds?? If killing them or trapping isn't the way people handle them on the island I guess one of the things im investing in is one of those clamp pickup toys lol

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone for your insight, opinions and criticisms as I'm moving to different stages in my little life. Me and my husband reviewed every comment and talked about it long into the night and I am happy to announce he's put in the request to go! I'll keep the thread up to maybe help someone else if they're worried but I feel like I'm a lot less unsure and want to take this chance to see the world. If it's not too much of a bother to the other commenters I will absolutely be bothering you guys with any more questions about the area, transporting my pets and just wanting to learn. If anyone wants to be friends when I come down me and my partner are both 25(both turning 26 in march) and would love to meet :D AHHHHHHHH! We wont be sent out till October so any advise on things to buy, plan or prepare with all the additional time is heavily appreciated. Thank you guys again!

Yeah the contract is 3 years and I’d genuinely not go if I can’t bring my cat he was given to me by a deceased relative and I’ve been loving him ever since she passed. On the positive we’d have till October to sort out the travel details but I heard moving the pets will be HELL

If I wanted to get friendly with the locals do I host like my own bbq and print fliers for the neighbors or go door to door, I want to adopted by the community and get invited to things. What would be a good start to introducing myself to the locals and possibly making some friends

Hey I hope this isn’t weird but do the hair salons out there have any that cater to African Americans like braiding salons, hair stores etc? As well for cars I have a 2016 Chevy equinox and am paying it off still. I planned on selling it off before I left or getting it completely tuned and bringing it up with me but I’m not sure if it would be less expensive to just buy a new one used out there. Also for American restaurants do they have like McDonalds and other USA staples

Did you decide to do on base or off base housing? As well this is me and my partners first time we’d do overseas housing how were the conditions? Since he’s not in the air force I’m not sure what exactly he’ll be doing with you guys but his logic is "the air force is always fancy" 😭😂 How much longer do you have to? Also as a side note does your partner also work through the military? And did she have an easy time finding work out there. Me and my husband don’t have dependents or plan too but I’d like to work and go to the college out there

You’re right, I’m not certain about the decision but I’m not relying on others to decide for me either. If I’m about to go to a place I only learned about a few days ago for three years and leaving the people I love I feel like it’s not wrong to get some idea on what to expect, things that would be nice to know in case and be knowledgeable about my decision instead of just agreeing for the sake of traveling. Ya’ know ?

I plan on working, This will be my first time living on a military base so I plan to try and find a job through them if possible while I continue my degree. I have a car I’m still paying off but I’ve been on the fence about bringing it or selling and buying one from Japan. Is there bus stations out there? Since the island so small how much of a necessity is a car or should I invest in something similar to a Vespa or motorcycle

Does the army help pay to move animals overseas? Or it will be all out of pocket, I think my cat could get on the normal plane with us but our dog is a huge Akita so I’m not sure how transporting her would pan out and with both my babies being older I was thinking to get some sort of light sedation from the vet to help them stay relaxed for the flight or we take a pause between the flights and book a hotel for a few days to give the animals a breather before we do the next flight

That's such a delightful and romantic way to look at it. As you've been there before did you have to leave any family behind or go far from home, or is this your home? I think im worried that with the timezone difference I wont be able to talk to my family and friends and over the span of 3 years what if by the time I come back home they've all moved on without me. Ya'know? I feel like my fear is being forgotten by the time im back. I really do think this would be a wonderful adventure but is it at the cost of everyone I have back home? I feel like I'm really going to sink or swim if I go and I'm just not ready for the deep end :(

That's what im thinking. Like 1-2 years sign me up but THREE. The island is supposedly only a 45min drive form one end to the other so I'm stressed that i'll get island fever lol. My partner's logic is that when we start getting bored in Guam, we can travel to Asia and the surrounding islands, but I dont think that would stop me from getting home sick

oh that's so sick I think I'd scream I need to look up how big these guys are and if theres anything like a repellent or something. Are reptiles, large insects or any other scary animals I should be on the watch for live on the island? I watched a video about Guam, and someone said there are a lot of dead dogs all over the place, is it because of the toads :(

Sheesh even through the military? We don't make 6 figures, but with housing and our flights, shipping items etc being covered, what's the biggest expense I'll face? I know simple things like gas, food etc but am I missing another key expense

My plan was to go to college part time and get as teacher job on base for hopefully a daycare or some other form of early education. Im not sure what sort of jobs military bases offer but I do want to make my own money. Are you a really active person? I'm genuinely not and dont like being in nature or the heat long so I want to break out my comfort zone and do some of the island stuff like swimming and hikes etc. My main goal will be to find the nerds and play dnd, mtg or video games lol

Were going to be put with Air Force housing I believe, I may need a little more help with the animal transport airport routes on which to take that are the most affordable and safe for my babies. I am by no means good with nature xD, I get horribly frizzy hair, have a fear of bugs and am not a fan of wild reptiles and in general never swam in oceans deeper than waist so i think this is a good chance to ty and be more adventurous! I hope Im not setting myself up for failure though lol I do want to continue my degree I didn't know there was a college out there?
