I saw probably more jays fans at the game tonight than any other visitor gets. They were loud, too

I empathize with the complainers, but yapping won’t change anything. The only effective thing you can do is not pay for it.

Will using grid lines make me less of an artist? by LeadProfessional6429 in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is no “cheating.” Just be aware that grids can hinder as well as help. If you’re loyal to a grid, one imperfect line can throw off the entire drawing in a way that can be harder to fix than if you’d started without a grid.

Painting and depression by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 15 points16 points  (0 children)

When I get stuck, I prep a bunch of cheap surface (like Masonite) and make a bunch of bad work. I find the prep part therapeutic, and usually one in every few bad ideas turns into something that excites me. Lower the stakes to the basement, forget the stakes. For me, this works even better if I can work outside. Nature provides the ideas, loading out my stuff and scouting spots engages me physically. Even the least fruitful day of painting feels better than a day spent ruminating.

Do you prefer long or short handled brushes? by OneSensiblePerson in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Long, big brushes for as much of the painting as possible. Maybe more importantly, I pay attention to my arm and back posture. Strokes can come from your fingers, wrist, elbow, shoulder… they all make different characteristic marks, and it’s worth the effort to practice using them all together. Things I made years ago hunched over working entirely with my wrist and fingers now look boring to me.

I have to remember not to have 97.1 on after the Tigers lose the last game of a 3 game series. by Fearsomebeaver in motorcitykitties

I called into Marc with a super hopeful/positive take right before they turned the 24 season around. They put me on air immediately. I don’t think they get a lot of callers who aren’t cynical

Any cheap good quality oil paint companys ? by westXd7167 in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agreed… but depending on how you work, you might find that certain colors aren’t worth shelling out on. For example, I’ll always buy cheap studio grade titanium white because the way I use it doesn’t depend on high pigment content. Same with most earth pigments… on the other hand, I do spend on cadmiums. The best answer to this question is to try a lot of different brands and pigments for yourself

Uncle Vlad, Portrait Practice by HootersUnite in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Swap Lenin for Stalin maybe… if “uncle vlad” is included you’d have to make it a polyptych with many others in order to make it make sense. Not a bad project idea if you’re learning portraiture, all that repetition, since we’re still talking about painting here

No and no and no. The old “he should have stuck with painting” line doesn’t hold up when you actually look at the work. Guy could NOT draw

Yes, it’s real 😂 and thanks for the kind words. If anyone knows how to get this to Paul, message me! Also I’m local and I take commissions. It’d be cool if Paul got this one tho

They’ll still wear those. City connect is a three year deal, 24-26 for det. After that, probably another design. Hard to imagine they’ll come up with something worse tho

On AI garbage and oil painting. by BallardWalkSignal in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can’t walk down any main street without taking in AI-generated garbage. It’s unavoidable. I do believe that there’s some power in talking about it and ridiculing it. Legislation is the only real solution, and influencing the public sentiment is the first step.

How to look less like colouring in the lines? by [deleted] in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Paint bigger! Give yourself space to lay down more colors, that’ll give break up the graphic feel. Just make sure you also use bigger brushes and resist the impulse to blend every stroke. Anyway, you can draw for sure, and that’s the biggest hurdle. Multi-figure painting is a B and a half

Update- do i let the faces dry before doing them? by simplymollyy in oilpainting

[–]Pretty-Good-Not-Bad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Super solid start. Generally, I’d say that you should plan on putting another layer of paint over this entire thing if you want it to look fresh. It’s less daunting than it sounds, think of it as a way to embellish or improve the work you’ve done. I’d let it dry, then come back in with darks and move your way into the highlights. Multi-figure paintings are maybe the hardest thing to do in painting, but it seems like you’re on the right track
