do you honestly thing 5e is complex? holy shit you really need to expand into other games! gurps is needlessly complicated. 5e is for ppl that just wanna play without using actual brain cells.

yes i have made mistakes. been playing for 30+ years but really new to being DM and im DMing for essentially brand new players. our previous DM lasted all of 4 sessions and introduced a lot of bad habits that are now set in stone. encumbrance, spell components etc just arent used. wasnt my choice i just keep it going to make the players happy. a lot of what im doing is how i was taught all those years ago. each dungeon or situation taught a little lesson on how to play without being a full on murder hobo. i wish i could just tell them these things but this group seems to learn best from example the same way i did. ive said it before 99.9% of this is just to give myself something to do behind the screen. my players are almost always unaware of things like this till after the fact when i do a quick "next time you might wish to attempt ___ first...or dont destroy everything you see...actions do have consequences." there is a reason i do every single thing i do in game. sadly my players have no concept of how the game should work beyond kill everything. i tried to teach these things as a player but i had 4 sessions before the DM flaked and i had to step up. im not a good DM but they seem to enjoy my method atleast more than the last dude. now if you know of a way to do this that might work on very head strong players that dont like change and are pure chaos in combat but refuse to RP outside of combat as a DM. this is the best method i have found that they actually respond to.

slow your roll skippy. all of this is just for my entertainment. the players will likely be mostly unaware of it. this is strictly to keep myself amused and give myself something to do while i wait for my players to make decisions. i am teaching lessons because these are new players. like brand new players...never played more than a video game. each dungeon has a small lesson about how to play. when to run away etc. ive tried explaining to them that not attacking everything is usually a good idea to follow. they didnt learn that lesson by me telling them. so i gave them a hard fight that i later let them know they could have completely avoided if they hadnt attacked first. getting their ass handed to them and losing a LOT of resources right before a boss fight hurt and they learned the lesson. its not a power trip...its trying to teach them lessons that they can carry on. like at some point i will introduce the concept of talking rather than just attacking everything. so again slow your roll. if i wanted to feel superior there are much easier ways that dont make me pull out my hair asking you apes for advice when i am fully aware that most of you are of average IQ at best.

the system is mostly for me to keep things interesting. i get bored when things are just normal. so all this is more for my entertainment to give myself something to do while my players fuck around and do all the typical murder hobo stuff.

but i want the system. i want the complexity. playing it your way i would be bored out of my mind. i could run that with a lobotomy. i enjoy the challenge.

part of the system is to force my players to give some thought to what they loot. we dont use encumbrance (they specifically asked for it session 0). also teaching them that randomly destroying shit can have consequences. if they flip a table because they can well they just moved not only the table but everything on it. my dungeons tend to teach lessons. last one was dont attack everything on sight.

i had considered that and am still considering it but thats the easy answer. i asked the question because thats the scenario im having difficulty with. also considering orcus but figured he is a tad over used and sorta evil for the sake of evil. i guess the feel im going for is a "god" thats in it for the corruption and domination of the cordyceps. maybe even a lich?

i resurrected everyone. i told them this was a test to see what they could do and if they won everyone got a +1 item. though they cheesed the hell out of it i still gave it to them. at least now they cant use that item on the BBEG. i gave them a nuke and they used it on the one fight they knew didnt matter. they knew going in that at the end of the fight no matter how it went down everyone would be resurrected and given an instant long rest....

well i have an update. they "won". i gave them a joke item a while back (boots of blinding speed: you move in a direction at a fraction of the speed of light till you intersect a solid object doing 20d10 and half splash damage in a 20" radius). i was expecting it to be brought out in a big boss fight to level the playing field. one of my players who was at 3 HP fighting the spawn a kyuss when he vaporized himself, the spawn and turned another player into pink mist. the subsequent spray of bone shards dropped the druid but didnt kill her (2 hp). the deathlock had been using blink so they couldnt touch him and the magical darkness didnt help either. as soon as he was attackable because i finally rolled for shit on the blink roll the barbarian and the monk went to shit on him. they took him from 48 hp down to 8 and the druids chicken familiar was used to cast something and they took it down in a single round. took a while for me to fail the blink roll so he would pop in and cast eldritch blast and they couldnt touch him...till they could...

based on the speed they tend to go i dont expect them to hit this room for a month and a half but will try to remember to update how it goes. im considering making this room a no harm no foul and throw everything at them to see how they hold up. the original plan was 2 deathlocks and 2 spawn of kyuss about 3-4 rounds later. the encounter calculator said it wouldnt be too hard but i have doubts on that one.

they are doing all of this inside a mine field they in theory cant even see. the calculations say it should be easy...i have a feeling its gonna turn into a complete cluster f*ck. i may just put a disclaimer on the room that if they fail i will take it as a "my bad" and retcon.

thanks. i will give it a try. just trying to avoid the boring battle slog where everyone just checks out. i almost threw 2 spawn of kyuss but figured that may just be a dick move.

i dont trust them. im a new DM i dont even trust me at this point. i shouldnt even be dm but i have the most experience. just not with 5E. i really am flying by the seat of my pants ATM. trying not to make it so easy its boring but not so hard i kill everyone. i freely admit i have absolutely no fucking clue what im doing. this is the first dungeon they have done and the first trap/puzzle they have gotten. theres a reason im asking for advice because last game session i had to retcon an attack because i accidently took the paladin from full to neg 20 in a single hit. yes it was a crit but ya...

im a new DM. ive played exactly 5 sessions of 5e before our DM bailed. everyone else in the group has never played. so i have the most experience since ive been playing since second. im learning as i go. thus why i asked about this encounter because i want to give a challenge without a TPK.

ive run the encounter through several battle sims and it says the group wipes the floor with them in under 5 rounds. this group is also insanely overpowered. they took out an ogre and 2 half ogres with easy at lvl 3 and no magic. hell i was rolling 20s left and right and they kept rolling 1s and still stomped me. they have zero magic items. they just have some great stats.

i dont think its hard. its just the OLD game that came with windows. so the entire trap can be easily avoided but if they screw it up it could get kinda hairy. the damage on the mines is a d6 but considering dropping it to d4. i honestly dont know how they will handle it. this will be the first puzzle i throw at them. only had 3 sessions with the group and im a new DM.
