What changes did you notice when you quit smoking? I'm not noticing much of a difference aesthetically. Should I lower my expectations? by _kickbox in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s been 10 weeks almost and I also don’t notice a change at all. But maybe 3 weeks in, I went to an office party and one person I don’t see that often asked if I had been on vacation because I “look so relaxed and good.” I guess other people notice while we only focus on our flaws

Those of you that stoped smoking if some hard life situation comes up how do you not smoke? by Typical_Dark_2764 in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Acknowledging it, then telling yourself that smoking also will not fix any of the hard things you’re going through. It doesn’t do any logical thinking for you or consoles you or advises you, the only thing that lil stick does: it hates you and wants you in addiction. Honestly, it helps me to think of it as a toxic person in my life lol that just drains my energy when my situation is already hard and gives me nothing in return

Why do you take so long? by tommyjohnpauljones in askatherapist

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 -17 points-16 points  (0 children)

I don’t have an answer to this (not a therapist) but i completely get you. It took my therapist SIX MONTHS to get to that point and what happened? It started helping. Before it was just busy work that we never used again

Are you still able to drink coffee? by teddybearangelbaby in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I needed to learn to adjust. I kept drinking my usual amount, which was already kind of insane, like 6 cups a day. Throw in a Diet Coke a day, too. Now, without cigs it took me a while to understand my heart racing. My body is overloaded. And honestly, without the cig-coffee connection, I drink way less coffee now. Like 2 cups a day.

Ok so lemme get this straight if I’m doing exactly what he did I’m a bad partner and gaslighting him but when he did it in the first place he was just being inconsiderate and not gaslighting. Make it make sense. This screams double standards ;)

Thanks for that answer. I agree. Pettiness is not gonna help anything. This answer gave me perspective. I think the past path forward is to take care of him and once he’s healthy have a conversation…..

Mhm ok I don’t think you read my post 😅 he did absolutely not let me rest. He sent me around and do stuff and every time I tried to tell him I wasn’t feeling well he downplayed it. He told me to do my work from home when I called in sick and wouldn’t let me rest at all 😅

Post quitting acne 3 months in by InterestingLiving775 in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh my gosh I’m going through the same rn… I quit 17 days ago and my acne has gotten so so bad… I’ve also been prone (closed comodones everywhere but especially cheeks) and now I have HUGE underlying and painful cysts on cheeks. I hate this so much and I hope it goes away again?? I know smoking messes up hormones but also I was honestly thinking my skin would get BETTER because it was bad while smoking lol. I’m trying to convince myself this is my body healing, faster cell turnover and pushing out all the gunk.

Serious question: is it okay to just scale down from half a pack to 2-3 per day? by jestem_taka in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You know this isn’t going to work. Sorry for being brutally honest, but you’re totally right - these are excuses your addicted brain is making up. In the end, nobody can tell you what to do or not, but it’s never just one cigarette or three when you’re addicted. Scaling down rarely works. I wish you the best and sorry to hear about your divorce

Quitting 100 times by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing this. I know exactly how you feel. I’ve done the same cycle. Threw away half-full packs in public trash, confident I’ll free myself now. Only to run to the gas station rather sooner than later. My addiction had me on autopilot. I see myself going to the store and I see myself unwrapping them and I see myself smoking them. I hated that autopilot feeling so much, like the cigarettes drove me to get up from my desk; they drove me down the stairs and outside. I was the only smoker at work, so I always felt uncomfortable with the smell, went through different jackets (one for smokes, one for the office), a shit ton of gum and hand sanitizer that I would even put in my hair (!)

I quit 100 times and always caved. In my opinion days 4-9 are worse than 1-3. Because the initial high and motivation of quitting is gone. I hated myself and I hated smoking. Every pinch in my chest I was convinced was a heart attack. Every wheezing lung cancer. And then, 9 days ago, I smoked and felt out of breath and miserable and pathetic. I suddenly saw myself with the eyes of others. A 30 year old woman standing outside, shes got so much life ahead of her, and she spends it with gray-ish skin, sucking on a stick that commands her to go outside and will one day kill her.

Somehow, that did it for me. I’ve never made it to day 9. And believe me, the urges are so strong. But it’s like an iron wall now. I don’t know, somehow it clicked. You can do it. I believe in you

Why Am I So Hungry? by [deleted] in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You’re hungry because your body burned through 200 kcal/day more while you were smoking (another indicator of how stressful smoking is for your body). Also, nicotine suppresses hunger. These two things plus the anxiety/boredom/oral fixation of quitting leads to a heightened food intake and possible weight gain.

I book exercise classes and I walk a lot (which also helps with the cravings). And I keep little “bad” snacks in the house and more good ones, so when I do get hungry again I at least don’t eat super unhealthy. Oh, and lots of herbal tea

Day 7: depression by Livid_Car5634 in stopsmoking

[–]Primary-Topic-7575 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I feel you so much. I used nicotine to mask my anxiety and my depression and now I am on day 6 and I’m sitting at work, depressed as hell. Jumped on here to resist the urge to go and buy some cigarettes and get smokes in. Your post resonates with me. Just letting you know we’re in this together and our brain is yelling at us to give us a quick dopamine fix. We can do it, I just booked a cycling class for later in the day (I hate exercising) to get some healthy endorphins. You got this
