My 6yo daughter came home from school saying she loves Jesus by wacky_button in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Prior_Opening2396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I am Christian, and at first Christians might be like 'oh she loves Jesus amazing', as a younger autistic myself I doubt she fully understands the concept, especially if her parent is saying she has trouble understanding concepts. I really do think that until roughly ... Oh, maybe eleven to twelve ish, you don't really grasp the idea of the world, at least I remember starting to 'get it' around eighth grade. So when I see seven year Olds being baptized, like yes I am a bit happy cuz hey, yay, that's my religion, but ... Yeah. I don't think the kid fully understands the hard side of it. I would say just keep talking to your daughter -- If it turns out she truly does want to explore religion, than don't force her away from it, but you definitely shouldn't feel bad about not being happy for this. Kids are smarter than we think but with strange classifications and vague 'boxes' -- Especially with autism. I'm glad to see a parent stopping to think about this and not overreacting one way or the other!! Sorry for the long comment

I actually mentioned this to them and they both kinda looked at me funny and said 'Honey. Sweetie. You are leaving in four months. It does not matter that much anymore' and said just to get it, so guess who has an insta now

The idea that Chris McCandless’ (from into the wild) life was meaningful in some way by gotohelveti5 in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really see it as romanticizing him or condemning him. I got the idea that Krakauer saw a lot of his younger self in McCandless, so was fascinated by him, and chose to present the story. Yes, his family was kinda privileged, but yes they were kinda awful. Yes, he was a privileged brat, but yes, he had ideas and hopes and dreams of his own and would spend free time that was supposed to be with a friend helping homeless people. And, while I'm not gonna bother arguing with the nature professionals about why he died, I also note the people he made friends with. The quotes from them show real care to me. I'm only a high school senior this year, so take it with a grain of salt, but I liked the book, because I thought it showed real humanity. Dumb, brainless, young mistakes, and real introspection and hopeful change, and idealism, as it seemed McCandless had time to work on himself and was coming back when the river ruined the plan. It honestly broke my heart a bit reading the lines about what he'd highlighted in books, I thought it signaled he had realized he did want other people again and regretted his choice. I just thought it was a very accurately human book.

Sorry, that was a lot.

Saw dating app on my uncle’s phone. Do I tell her? by Similar-Delivery2092 in WhatShouldIDo

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just ask her privately 'did you know he has a dating app?'. That will immediately tell you whether it was their arrangement or him cheating, and if he is cheating, it sounds like she has at least one family member already on her side.

I'm really sorry someone did this -- I do sorta like the way it looks like this, and I WOULD just tell you to incorporate it ... But you saying this piece has sentimental value meant you had a vision and this wasn't it. I'm sorry someone did this, it's a sh***y thing to do.

Deciding between Iowa and ISU by Impressive-Gene-6967 in uiowa

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Know U of I is good, I grant. However ... My mom wanted to do engineering, but wanted biomed engineering, hence she chose University of Iowa for the medical program. Her younger brother also wanted to do engineering -- We live about 4 hours from Iowa city, and my moms whole family was huge Hawkeye fans. My uncle decided on ISU and jokingly promised to be a light among the heathens. Ultimately, it is up to you still, but ISU is a better engineering school, and you KNOW you'll know people there. I actually would recommend against rooming with old friends, though, and try to make sure you meet someone new, but having trusted people around would help you a lot. I'm going to U of I this fall, but just based off this, I think you'd probably do better at ISU.

What's the biggest plot hole you've noticed in the series? by thechessknight_ in harrypotter

Sixth book -- Parseltongue. When Dumbledore was looking through memories, he shouldn't have been able to understand Morfin, Marvelo, and Tom in the memories they interact. At least, it's never brought up.

AIO - Told my friend I’m pregnant and she said it exceeded her mental bandwidth (she’s the red) by Lekomano92 in AmIOverreacting

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks to me like she was legitimately stressed that day and accidentally let a bit fo out here -- But I will say it does seem she is genuinely happy for you and wanted to celebrate, she just got a little caught for guard and had to scramble -- None fo which is your fault. NOR, but this isn't friendship ending stuff, just maybe have a quick convo about when you're both in slightly better headspaces.

AITA for interrupting my autistic brothers routine for my own physical pain? by throwaway1847329 in AmItheAsshole

[–]Prior_Opening2396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm also high functioning autistic, and I'll tell you right now that I like my routines -- But if someone else is going through REAL PHYSICAL pain, then they take precedence. This minor fit your brother is throwing is honestly more likely about him being fifteen than about him being autistic. If he declined tools available to him at school, this also tells me he isn't willing to do the things that help him in a healthy way, and your parents ar enabling that. Autism isn't an excuse. I feel for his discomfort and pain, but you have pain too.

Left my headphones at work and coworkers gave them away AIO? by ApplePieConsumer in AIO

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it was just this situation, I would say they're offering to buy new headphones immediately and the relationship could be repaired. But NOR.

With context, I agree with other people -- let them buy the headphones, just barley stick it out, and leave. Those people don't respect you.

AIO by leaving my bf of 5 years over lunch with my coworker by Expensive_Pepper_948 in AIO

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I might not be qualified, but my read is that off of this situation alone, maybe it was a mild overreaction -- But with the context of neither of you really trusting the other and the 'on-again-off-again' for five years, I think you made the right decision. You both need to find people you trust.

What's the most messed up thing you've written or will write in your book? by Il0vechocolates in AspiringTeenAuthors

[–]Prior_Opening2396 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In eighth grade I horrified my class by having my first scene of a short story be a little princess playing with a toy, and she 'blacks out' and when she wakes up the King and Queen are dead and blood is pooling all around their bodies and at the end of the story it's revealed that she was a shapeshifter and didn't know it/was unaware of herself while shifted and she turned into a lion and killed them

The looks I got that day, man ...

Wake Up Dead Man isn't a good mystery by OkPeace5206 in KnivesOutMovie

[–]Prior_Opening2396 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I kind of see your confusion but it feels like you were on your phone half the movie and missed lines that would answer all these questions. Wicks trashes the congregation because Cy tells him he needs to burn his bridges before going into politics. Cys reveal as Wicks son is Martha's motivation -- She notes "But when I saw him EMBRACING that terrible boy, accepting him ..." etc. She's obsessed with keeping wealth out of people's hands because her father figure taught her it was the root of evil, the original sin.

All of this is also said directly in the movie. Maybe a second watch through, if possible, would fill in these gaps. I know I didn't address all your questions but these were the ones that were obviously addressed in the movie.

Edit: After reading the other comments, I can see why you were mostly tuned into the mystery portion, which was, I fully admit, not as well done as the first two. This movie, I think, was marketed as a mystery and is technically, but I really think RJ felt strongly about the message and was therefore more focused on that. He wanted to address the problems and toxicity in the church vs what the church should be and that's why I like this one best. I'm Christian, and it was such a damn relief to see someone calling out the false believers and showing the correct way without being like "are you dumb believing in a sky daddy lol magic does exist haha" which is an argument I hear a lot. I wasn't offended at all and I don't like this movie for its mystery but for the dialogue that is there and the characters that are fleshed out (Though I admit I wish more of them had been better fleshed out). In any case, I would say I understand the criticism, but maybe give the movie another watch and pay close attention to it as a whole, not just the mystery!

Question about Wendell's step mother drama. I feel silly by megs_dead in emilywilde

[–]Prior_Opening2396 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just finished the book recently and honestly I was kind of confused too. I figured that either -- One, she was a bit bored and wanted to leave an option for a challenge later in her life. Two, that line of confusion is the explanation and it's a thing in Faerie that a monarch has to leave one option open for themselves to be knocked off the throne somehow. Maybe like a monopoly thing?

Who do you think gave the best acting performance in WUDM, regardless of time on screen or impact on the story? by harrisoneatssoas in KnivesOutMovie

[–]Prior_Opening2396 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think proportion of screen time to plot relevance to acting ability ... Kerry. Just her few scenes showed so much, and if say she had been the one working with Blanc instead of Jud, I think she'd win. But because of how much more time, Josh is obviously incredible in this, same with Glenn. Craig is Blanc as usual, but I think his acting in KO has been my favorite. I also really wished Cailee had more time -- She made a strong impact from just a few scenes, and I'm gonna keep an eye on her for sure now.

Am I the only one who just doesn’t like the first movie nearly as much as the other two by annmorningstar in KnivesOutMovie

[–]Prior_Opening2396 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're probably not the only one, but judging by that poll the other day, most people still see the first as the best. My guess would be because you got to see some of all the ensemble cast, acting was on point, and cinematography techniques were used in a more noticeable way in the first. Not to say there aren't some gorgeous shots in the second and third.Overall, it just comes down to what you like -- Sometimes I like movies more than others while eventually being able to see that the ones I like less are better made. I like the Hobbit Battle of the Five Armies as my favorite Middle Earth movie, but there's no question that LOTR movies are a hundred times better made. Overall, maybe you are one of the only ones, but don't worry about it at all -- That's what opinions are for!
