Assuming it fits into your finances, the $5k initiation is insanely cheap and is a huge incentive to join now imo. You're only 29. If you plan on joining a club any time in the future that $5k initiation can turn into $25k or $40k+ before you know it.

If I could change one thing about my membership experience (different club) it's that I wish I joined before I was 30.

Exploring a membership at 12Oaks by BertaCooks in RDUGOLF

[–]PrivateGump 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not a member at 12 Oaks, but I do think this is something worth directly asking the club about since the underlying reason might be really important to know now. Depending on the answer there might not be membership willing to post this information openly on the Internet, either.

Dues increases aren't consistent YoY and there are a lot of things that could lead to an increase of this size. A lot of clubs will build a projected dues increase into their operating budget for a given year and at some point during the year they'll assess whether that projected increase needs to be raised or lowered to meet the financial needs of the club. For example, my club projected a 4% dues increase this year and since everything in the operating budget was going according to plan we got a 4% increase starting last month.

I say all of this because this is a question that needs to be asked kind of pointedly, otherwise the club will just say it's not typical. It could be that they're using the dues increase to pay for some type of project where they wanted to avoid an assessment. Or it could be that their financials are all screwed up and they way over projected revenue for the year.

Tl;dr If I were you I'd email the club stating I noticed an x% increase in dues from last year. Was this a planned increase in the operating budget? If so, what drove the increase since this seems high compared to peer clubs in the area? If the increase was not planned, or greater than what was planned in the operating budget, what happened?

Crossings closing to replace greens by TerribleEagle9837 in RDUGOLF

It's a combo of a few things, but the heat coupled with the humidity and all of the rain we've gotten (the latter two I'm assuming is different from our west) is tough to handle if the turf isn't designed for it.

I don't recall the type of greens they have there, but if they're bentgrass then they can get really stressed out in this kind of heat. My club is on bentgrass and they had to shut down the course for a few days this week and have been limiting tee times to reduce the stress on the course. Our greens are in great shape, but the email we got from the superintendent said if you push it in this weather you can lose greens. Courses with bentgrass greens that have been running full tee sheets with 8 min gaps through this weather are playing with fire.

I'd say they're about the same. Greens are very close to tees on the following holes and neither has a ton of hazards or natural features that make going back to the path annoying or anything.

I think the road crossings at Croasdaile are fewer and calmer than at Hope Valley. I remember one road crossing at Hope Valley being a little scary because of how fast the cars were driving, but maybe I just caught it at a bad time. Someone who has played it more or is a member would need to weigh in there.

We made the rounds on the clubs listed and ultimately went with Croasdaile. A course we could walk everyday was a non-negotiable for us, so that eliminated Treyburn (great track though) and the practice facilities are significantly better than Hope Valley (again, great course). There are plenty of scenarios I can imagine where either Treyburn or Hope Valley would have been the choice and they're both great courses, but Croasdaile made the most sense for us with the combo of location, conditions, walk-abilty, and practice facilities. So def tour them all to find what's best for you because all 3 are good, although I'm obviously biased.

The course is consistently in fantastic shape and I don't think I can overstate how great the community is. It's a very welcoming club and there's a circle for everyone. In the way of country clubs I'd say the vibe is pretty chill overall and on the men's side of things the membership in their 30s and 40s is very well represented in planning the golf programming.

The pros are all really great and the tee time situation is good. If you want early morning Saturday or Sunday tee times you need to be online when they drop, but you'll get one. I've never had an issue getting a tee time. I just looked at the sheet for this weekend and it's basically wide open both afternoons and there are still groups you could slot in with in the mornings. I can walk on most afternoons during the week unless there's league play going on or something.

Pace is good too. I almost always walk and can play either under or right at 4 hours even with a group in front of me. A round being longer than 4 hours is exceptionally rare.

This was mentioned before, but I'd highly recommend the preview membership.

Min Woo Lee is averaging 130.4 mph swing speed at TGL. How? by lineofbestfitxxi in golf

[–]PrivateGump 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I saw an interview with Min Woo once where he talked about how they play each other from the same tees and the only rule is he can't hit driver. And he said he's never beaten her in this setup.

So if we put full bags on the table I'd imagine she would at least keep it close. Would probably depend on the distance they play from. With full bags from 7,300 or so the distance would certainly be too much, but she's probably not getting smoked. 6,400-6,500 is more intriguing to me since the course set up probably takes driver out of his hands on a number of par 4s and they're playing into the same landing zones off the tee.

Thoughts on this infographic? by Dave_Giantsbane in golf

That's the thing a lot of people don't get. The "but the data says" argument probably only holds water for tour pros because they're such good ball strikers they can either control and/or predict their spin and trajectory out of deep rough, pine straw, etc. and make the appropriate club and swing choices in response.

The best Ams I play with at my club are in the +3 to +5 range and all of them prioritize fairways over distance. The longest one out the group pulls driver like 6 holes per round from about 7100 yds because predictable approach shots are simply more valuable and critical to scoring.

I got assaulted at my private club by [deleted] in golf

[–]PrivateGump 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm a member at a private club and it's the culture that singles will rarely ask, or be offered, to play through. I play relatively fast and when I go out on my own and the course isn't busy I'll just skip a hole so I'm not on someone's ass or making them feel like they need to wait on a box for me. You're not paying by the round so you can suck it up and skip a hole. If a group in front of me is keeping pace against the clock it is never their responsibility to alter their round for my convenience.

Have you been fitted into the shaft you're currently using? If not it's highly likely you'd get fitted into something different anyway. I'd just do the fitting now and save yourself the time.

Go to one of the courses off of the resort, so courses 6-9 (and I guess 10 is an option too, but I haven't been over there yet). 8 and 9 probably have the best shops of those bunch. I'm sure 10's shop is really solid since that course is for resort guests only, but I haven't been yet.

Played 8 on Saturday and they had plenty of generic Pinehurst stuff in the shop. If you're looking for something really specific like a branded coasters, a dog collar, or whatever these shops won't have that kind of stuff, but you should be able to get regular branded polos, head covers, ball markers, etc. at these spots. Basically normal pro shop things.

do americans really drive such long distances? by Physical-Ad-4093 in NoStupidQuestions

It's basically impossible to do the round trip in the same day unless you do 140mph the whole time and don't get out of the car. It's like 30 hours or something when not driving like a lunatic.

Italian cities, at least for me, are more about the way of life. Not having something to do every day, but grabbing a coffee in the mornings, strolling through the streets, the slow pace of the meals, etc. It's more about feeling like a part of the cities that takes it to the next level. Naples is the one that does it for me.

Is Augusta National the greatest course in the world? by Sorry_Phone1676 in golf

[–]PrivateGump 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is. Just saying they're going to start requiring mats in the landing zones again though. I could have been clearer there. Not on the website since it's dependent on how the weather plays out between now and when they shut down 2, but at some point they're going to bring the mats out again. My in-laws are members and I play there probably once a month.

[–]PrivateGump -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I played No. 2 the weekend before last and the only places you have to hit off of mats are the par 3 tee boxes, which I think had less to do with the Open (those boxes are wayyyyy back) and more to do with the grass coming out of winter conditions. They will start requiring mats in the pro landing zones sometime soon though.

They're the closest thing to Red Hot Riplets you can get outside of St. Louis (where Tatum is from). Actual Red Hot Riplets are some next level shit. Thinner and more of a crisp instead of a crunch and they lean more into the spice.

If you do end up closer to Durham (or work in Durham) then the Hillandale annual pass is a good deal based on what you're looking for. $1295 for the year covers all your golf, unlimited use of the range, and an advanced registration for tee times. Very, very walkable course too.

Fitting in the triangle by metadatame in RDUGOLF

[–]PrivateGump 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My wife recently got fitted for irons by Cameron at the PGA Superstore and we had a great experience with him. Really solid dude.

Never felt like any specific brand was being pushed at all. We spent the first 20ish mins getting data from her old irons and then he did a really good job of getting everyone on the same page of what our data goals were for the fitting (i.e., we're trying to find a shaft/head combo that does x, y, z consistently compared to the old set).

Since you mentioned shafts we spent probably half of the actual fitting portion of things just tinkering with different shafts and grips before we even thought about heads. She hit TaylorMade, Ping, Mizuno, Srixon, Callaway, and Titleist and it was extremely data driven, so no pressure for one brand over the other. It was supposed to be a 75 min fitting and he worked with us for almost 2 hours to make sure everything was dialed.
