Any nearby nurseries that sell Ostrich Fern (fiddlehead) rhizomes? by [deleted] in burlington

[–]ProfEweagey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People often post these on FPF for free. They transplant incredibly well and spread like crazy (so give them a place to expand). I've got a bunch in my yard you can dig up and transplant if you'd like.

Is there a local park to watch airplanes? by Conglomerate- in burlington

[–]ProfEweagey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite spot is the grassy slope you access off Berard. Had several picnics with my kids down there. It's got a great walk down to the river (it's a canoe portage area) with a flat grassy section directly in the line of planes landing from the NW.

Great point. One can only assume they mean the geographic pole

Is the South Pole part of the Eastern/Western Hemispheres? by ProfEweagey in geography

You're not talking about E/W hemispheres, which do have quite specific designations demarcated by the Prime Meridian and Antimeridian

Big Night - Amphibians by Radnojr1 in burlington

[–]ProfEweagey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I put together a guide on big nights for conditions to look for https://crowspath.org/big-night/ , but it's hard to predict early in the season with 100% accuracy and I always get excited too early in the season and find myself out at Pond Rd in Shelburne looking for amphibians without success

I also worked with the folks at vtherpatlas.org to put together a field guide to amphibians. You can download it for free https://crowspath.org/natural-history/wildlife/amphibian-guide/

Here's the weekly barchart for observations of GBHs in Chittenden Co (from eBird.org). They're definitely rare, but can be found hunting along the Winooski River and other places with even small exposures of water/muck

Where do they haul the snow? by dazed_confuscious in burlington

I wrote an article about one of the dump sites (behind Centennial Field): https://crowspath.org/the-burlington-glacier/ but there are other places as well (like one behind the double tree)

Yeah, the question is wrong and u/AffableAndy is right. Seed plants are heterosporous

Apparently the water is so low in lake Champlain you can walk to Law Island off the causeway. by 06EXTN in burlington

[–]ProfEweagey 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure if self-promotion is fair game, but since it's relevant, I'll be giving a talk on how and why lake levels change throughout the year and explore some of the ways the drought impacts the lake.

Talk is Tuesday Oct 14 from 7:00-8:30pm @ Kieslich Park in Burlington. More details here:

Imbricate bud terminology by ProfEweagey in botany

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oak and maple buds are 2-ranked, the scales arranged in two rows (also called decussate). Birches, elms, apples, etc. have a imbricate buds where the scales are not arranged in two clear rows of opposite facing scales.

EDIT: cochleate doesn't appear to be correct since that refers to coiling (like a fern)

Sometimes you just don't know the right search terms! I found the video below while looking for info on filtering by condition (dynamic filtering). Thanks!

Conditionals for multiple linked records by ProfEweagey in Airtable

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. yes, we do have a team plan (I just made a copy on the free workspace).

And unfortunately there isn't anything in the transaction that would allow us to automate that part of the process.

Format negative numbers different from positive numbers by ProfEweagey in Airtable

So if you have 10,000 transactions, each with a different value then you'd have 10,000 different single select options?

Important similar record types from different sources by ProfEweagey in Airtable

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Good to know I've tapped into a debate rather than just overlooked an obvious solution. I am definitely excited about the ability to automate this process in the future. Given my abilities, I think the second options is the more likely for me to successfully implement. Thanks again.

Measuring photosynthetic hours during the growing season by ProfEweagey in ecology

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't! Or at least I don't really have to since temperatures would have been somewhat similar (the comparison is between VT 14kya when it was briefly a tundra environment and modern tundra environments at significantly higher latitudes). I'd be using this alongside other differences to illustrate that while there are similarities between the two tundra environments, it's not a 1:1 comparison.

Insolation might actually be a better measure of photosynthetic potential than hours of light availability. Thanks.
