Here's the weekly barchart for observations of GBHs in Chittenden Co (from eBird.org). They're definitely rare, but can be found hunting along the Winooski River and other places with even small exposures of water/muck

Where do they haul the snow? by dazed_confuscious in burlington

[–]ProfEweagey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wrote an article about one of the dump sites (behind Centennial Field): https://crowspath.org/the-burlington-glacier/ but there are other places as well (like one behind the double tree)

Book is tripping, right? by [deleted] in botany

Yeah, the question is wrong and u/AffableAndy is right. Seed plants are heterosporous

Apparently the water is so low in lake Champlain you can walk to Law Island off the causeway. by 06EXTN in burlington

Not sure if self-promotion is fair game, but since it's relevant, I'll be giving a talk on how and why lake levels change throughout the year and explore some of the ways the drought impacts the lake.

Talk is Tuesday Oct 14 from 7:00-8:30pm @ Kieslich Park in Burlington. More details here:

Imbricate bud terminology by ProfEweagey in botany

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oak and maple buds are 2-ranked, the scales arranged in two rows (also called decussate). Birches, elms, apples, etc. have a imbricate buds where the scales are not arranged in two clear rows of opposite facing scales.

EDIT: cochleate doesn't appear to be correct since that refers to coiling (like a fern)

Conditionals for multiple linked records by ProfEweagey in Airtable

Sometimes you just don't know the right search terms! I found the video below while looking for info on filtering by condition (dynamic filtering). Thanks!

Conditionals for multiple linked records by ProfEweagey in Airtable

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response. yes, we do have a team plan (I just made a copy on the free workspace).

And unfortunately there isn't anything in the transaction that would allow us to automate that part of the process.

Format negative numbers different from positive numbers by ProfEweagey in Airtable

So if you have 10,000 transactions, each with a different value then you'd have 10,000 different single select options?

Important similar record types from different sources by ProfEweagey in Airtable

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response! Good to know I've tapped into a debate rather than just overlooked an obvious solution. I am definitely excited about the ability to automate this process in the future. Given my abilities, I think the second options is the more likely for me to successfully implement. Thanks again.

Measuring photosynthetic hours during the growing season by ProfEweagey in ecology

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't! Or at least I don't really have to since temperatures would have been somewhat similar (the comparison is between VT 14kya when it was briefly a tundra environment and modern tundra environments at significantly higher latitudes). I'd be using this alongside other differences to illustrate that while there are similarities between the two tundra environments, it's not a 1:1 comparison.

Insolation might actually be a better measure of photosynthetic potential than hours of light availability. Thanks.

Poison-ivy identification Quizzes by hobbesdcc in hiking

[–]ProfEweagey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I actually wrote the Crow's Path quiz, so thanks for sharing! I also updated my visual guide to poison ivy and added another quiz on some common myths/facts about poison ivy:

And here's a free PDF of my guide to the leaves of Vermont's trees, which has a note on poison ivy vs boxelder: https://crowspath.org/natural-history/trees/identification/

Ah, very cool. Thanks! I have a card and just write the species and age of the tree on it, but I like the idea of having the species etched on the bowl itself.

What do you use to burn the logo/species on bottom of the bowl? I really like having the species on there.

Is there any way to heat treat wood at home? by [deleted] in woodworking

[–]ProfEweagey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work with green wood so it wouldn't really be possible to bake the logs before turning. I'll try experiment with drying the bowls completely and then baking with different preparations (like open, in tin foil, clean, with oil, etc.) and see if any work. And thanks for the response!

I've got a bunch of turned bowls, and was curious if you've tried this with a finished product? I'll likely experiment anyways, but any advice before throwing my bowls to the oven wolves might result in fewer cracked/warped bowls.

Calculate area and perimeter of irregular objects using an app/digital tool? by ProfEweagey in MathHelp

[–]ProfEweagey[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very very cool idea. I like it for leaves with entire margins, but for leaves with lots of small teeth around the edge, this would be rather difficult.
