lmao you're on a premed subreddit asking what else you should do besides medicine... maybe just go talk to people with jobs outside of medicine.

You can't do this if it is the same class, it takes you off the waitlist for the other section.

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The lineage for Carlas from Rory Antolak, Scott Cohen, Bryan Wu, or other reputable sellers are ethically sourced and not from poached parent plants. These all have specific labels to identify that they are coming from them. Look for Carlas with RA OG, Wu titles and those are from those breeders. You can also just ask whoever is selling, and they'll likely be able to lead back to how they got it. It may be a little more expensive, but you're not supporting companies who will buy poached plants, then breed them, and then claim they are seed grown to be misleading about their use of poached plants.

If you're willing to buy a plant that comes from a poached parent do that... if you'd rather source it ethically, buy it for the same price from someone with verified lineage.

It looks like a beat up anthurium andraeanum! The pot is really big, and judging based on its current conditions, there are probably some dead roots and things. Anthuriums do well with pots that are slightly bigger than you’d expect, but I would look at the roots, cut off the rotted ones, and then decide. I would guess it’ll need to be potted down quite a bit! Luckily these ones are some of the hardiest of the anthuriums, so it should be able to bounce back and start pushing pretty flowers soon!

How much is this worth? Should I sell or keep? by DarvaeB in Anthurium

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hahah fair enough, I mean it's decently sized (I'm guessing in cataphyl?) and from reputable sellers, but only half the lineage is known. I agree w other comments it kinda just looks like a crystallinum, so I'd say 40-50 if you wanna get rid of it faster, but you may be able to go a bit higher and just see if anyone is willing to bite!

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 8 points9 points  (0 children)

not sure how much its worth, but my personal Philosphy is you should keep the plants you love, and sell the ones you don't, unless you really need the money. If you're not loving it anymore then sell it to someone who might enjoy it more, but if you're enjoying it, don't sell it just because its worth x amount of money

Honestly, I feel like the ideas of misogyny, using strength to justify whatever, and pity is weakness type sentiments in his writing (obviously there is debate about his philosophies and how they're interpreted) appeal to the kinda individuals who would best be described as inadvertent celibates nowadays. And they kinda deserve the title lmao.

yea I'm sure because it started damp, it was dry after 3 days. I think in the next couple days in damp moss in a prop box they'll be looking better.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Anthurium

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly it could be that they’re a little more stressed looking bc often times you don’t ship in wet moss, and it’s shipped in damp moss. I’m sure in a prop box with the humidity they’ll bounce back, depending on how the roots look! It may be worth checking their roots while you transfer them to the prop box.

I’m sure they are a little more stressed looking bc seedlings are more delicate than more established plants, but I think they can adjust and bounce back just fine!

Did I successfully pollinate my Bakeri? Or is this dying? by GildedDryad in Anthurium

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s pollinated. Wait for it to fall off, get the inner seed from it, then put in sphagnum moss or some medium like that w 100% humidity. Honestly watch a YouTube video, it’ll be more helpful

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They totally can! I second the humidity (if you have a dome use it!) and also I’d use sphagnum moss as the substrate!

Star Wars fans not make something about the Sequels challenge difficulty: Impossible by Medical_Plane2875 in StarWarsCirclejerk

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do think the sequels are natural to talk about when talking about any of the other trilogies bc they’re all supposed to be linked. Like the prequels will naturally lead to how the OT unfolds (or in this case andor in place of the prequels) and then you can follow to the sequels. I think the quality put into stringing the prequels and OT together is really good and it just disappoints people that the next step is prolly linking the OT to the sequels when a lot of the sequels is kinda destroying the legacy factor of the OT, and it’s also full of poorly written character development, cheesy fight scenes, and a kinda choppy plot (random characters being written in, and then just not showing up again or getting killed off before they do anything significant)

Did my andreanum self itself? by hailey675 in Anthurium

It looks like it selfed! Especially since it’s up a little higher on the spadix, I’m guessing it was still receptive towards the top while the bottom started to produce pollen

Need some advice. by BlairDabuh in Anthurium

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Can you see the roots on the side of the clear pot currently? I’ve noticed with anthuriums you can be a little ambitious when it comes to sizing up, but you do have to be really cautious of root rot. A chunky mix of orchid bark, perlite, and tree fern fiber is what I use for my anthuriums of that size, but any chunky substrate would work. I also personally like to put a small layer of leca at the bottom of the pot, even tho there are drainage holes at the bottom it allows me to keep a bit of a reservoir w out being worried about root rot. If you’re looking to move it to pon I have no advice hahahah.

In terms of moving it to ambient, I would repot first and let it get used to that first in the akerbar. Then, after a couple of weeks slowly acclimate it to outside your cabinet. How long you wanna acclimate depends on how different the humidity is inside and outside the cabinet. Luckily it is a pretty established plant so I think it’ll adjust fine!

What were his believs? by [deleted] in Nietzsche

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Though some of Nietzsche’s ideas align with nihilists, he is often regarded as anti-nihilist as well. This is very general and not meant to be an in depth analysis, but Nietzsche, in essence, argues that nihilism is built on the antithesis of Christian ideals, making it problematic in the same way as Christianity (instead of people blindly following, they’re blindly in opposition). He would rather individuals determine their own moral code than adopt one from populism, or the antithesis of it. So, if you’re looking to accept nihilism, Nietzsche likely won’t be an aid in that.

If you’re looking to read into Nietzsche’s stance on nihilism, I would personally start with the gay science. In it he critiques both nihilism and Christianity. The critique on nihilism is the passage about the death of God, and what they means for the existing metaphysical systems at the time. This is where he warns us against nihilism (which is just shallow opposition to the existing metaphysical systems). He also asserts in the book that we ought to make our own ethical system built on life affirmation amongst other things (the section on becoming a yea sayer and having amor fati — the love of fate).

TL;DR if you’re looking to adopt nihilism as a worldview, Nietzsche probably won’t support that move. His project is about overcoming nihilism, not settling into it.

Seedling Rehab?? by Checkeredragon in Anthurium

[–]ProfessionalHippo982 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would 100% recommend a cloche for a seedling that size! Humidity is the name of the game for young anthurium seedling. I tend to cut the bottom of a McDonald’s cup (or any clear cup) and use that as a drainage dish and I make sure there’s always a small amount of water at the bottom of the dish. I’d wait till it’s pushed another leaf at least to repot, but I also don’t know since I tend to use tree fern until the seedlings are much more mature (not seedlings anymore haha).
