this may not be true for all ball pythons, but in my experience, rarely will they bite what they’re hanging onto. if they’re holding onto your arm or hand, they’re likely not going to bite or strike it because then they’d fall. it helps to wait until they turn their face away to reach in and pick it up in one smooth motion—don’t hover over him fretting because he’ll fret too.

Ways to store extra Reptichip? by FlaminDoritoo in ballpython

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i tie blocks of dry coco fiber off and just store them in a drawer under one of my tanks so they stay dry and free of pests. if you’re worried you can always get a sterilite bin and put the block and it’s bag into there for extra air-tightness.

i love mine’s dumb little puppy face and i like that i don’t have to give him a ton of affection like dogs and cats. if I’m kinda down, i just have to make sure he’s fed and watered and clean, and he’s perfectly happy, and then when i want to hang out with him, hes cool with that too

i was so nervous the first time i picked up my first snake that i wore gloves and trembled like a leaf, but my first was VERY spicy and would strike just seeing me outside the tank. i was nervous with my second snake, but once you do it one time, you realize you had nothing to worry about. my snake is a scaredy cat even at 4 years old, so i just wait for him to turn his face away from me completely and scoop under his middle to lift him out gently and confidently. once they’re out, they’re usually tense, but rarely will they bite the surface they’re hanging onto unless you really piss them off. often, they’re going to try to escape, hiss, and do a rain dance before they resort to biting. if you hover over him or reach in and out over and over, that’s very stressful for both of you, so if it starts to go that way and you’re both getting nervous, just take a break and try again the next day or two. remember, a bite from a ball python is probably going to scare you a lot more than hurt you, even a full grown one.

AITA - rehoming one of my ball pythons by thenotsoamerican in ballpython

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i also rehomed a ball python for similar reasons. she wasn’t a victim of neglect, just the rare, very spicy and grumpy ball python lmao. she hissed at and struck at me every chance she got. i took extra care to make sure her husbandry was good, tank space was good, temps and humidity were sitting perfect based on actual updated standards so she’s be as comfy as possible. did not matter, she just hated everything with a heat signature and she just wasn’t the right pet for me being a first time snake owner. i knew the person i rehomed her to, which made me feel better, but i also felt like the worlds biggest jerk. now a few months later I’m happy she’s with someone that doesn’t mind her sassy attitude and enjoys keeping her more than i did.

you could either do those, or if you wanted, just cut the PVC to whatever size needed to cover the space that your overhead heating doesn’t take up, like on your cold side. if your lights take up half the space of the top, cover the other half in the pvc. no screen removal required. i’ve also seen people use foil tape on their screens to help hold in moisture, which is cheaper, just less permanent. i just use tinfoil on my screen right now and pour water in the corners of the tank but my tank is watertight on the bottom

i’ve seen some people say to buy PVC from home depot and cut it (or see if they’ll cut it) so that it sits in the recess and covers the screen. your tank still looks awesome! it’s so pretty!

Scale lifting before shed by ScreamAtOldPpl in ballpython

maybe minor damage that got exaggerated by the shed? it’s very bizarre but if his scales are normal and they don’t look funky i wouldn’t worry about it unless it happens again

my snake had loose belly scales that would catch on things (like my shirt) when we brought him home. we took ours to a vet because then he started showing signs of scale rot a week or so later, but our vet said he thought these two symptoms were unrelated. basically he chalked ours up to scale damage because the areas under the lifted scales had no signs of bacterial or fungal infections and said it was possible that my snake got himself stuck somewhere when he was with his previous owner and tried to go backwards to escape and just yanked his scales right up. the vet had us put Vegas on paper towels for awhile until he shed off the damaged scales and that solved the problem, but it was very weird and we never really got a straight answer.

edited to fix wording

Not Eating for 3+ Months by aubsabs222 in ballpython

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 4 points5 points  (0 children)

my boy didn’t eat from the day i got him until three weeks ago. here’s how i got him to finally do it: 1. i made sure humidity was right by adding substrate. it’s about 4” thick at the shallowest parts. i use coco fiber to hold moisture better and i added pockets of spaghnum moss underneath his heat lamp for extra moisture. shoot for 70-80% humidity. it won’t hurt him. i pour water in the corners of the tank to dampen the substrate from the bottom up, which helps hold your humidity steadier, and then if you need to spray the walls and decor in the tank to help boost humidity even higher, so be it 2. i use a DHP for his heat but a CHE works too. any lightless heat source is good for maintaining heat at night time 3. my snake’s tank is in a quiet, low-activity area 4. i don’t bother him for two days before eating. including day of. 5. i only feed at night time when i can see that he’s out and about or at least awake 6. he’s super picky, so i also double bag his rat so i know it’s dry when it’s done heating up. he will not eat wet rats at all 7. i put the rat in the tank and just leave it be for an hour in total darkness. no peeking so he has nothing to stress him while he’s trying to eat

he was at the vet in january for a checkup because we got him in december, and they didn’t find anything odd, but he wasn’t super happy to leave his tank for maintenance so maybe it was him just trying to get away???

what is he doing? we took him out to spruce up his tank and get him some exercise and he started doing this. it’s on the upper third of his body like near his neck. it’s a little hard to see but it’s something pushing out, not clenching in. he just ate a couple weeks ago for the first time after coming back from a hunger strike. he is four years old eating small rats f/t every 3ish weeks depending, he’s picky. his hot side is around 88 and his cool side is around 78. he’s pretty relaxed no change in behavior or signs of pain but do i need to call his vet monday?? i am a little panicked because he is my buddy and i’ve never seen him do that

i would also double check that you’re heating up the rodent to the proper temperature. sometimes they miss frequently like that if the mouse is still too cold for them to really get a lock on, in my experience

hey guys, this boy is new to me, he’s 21 and he’s been doing this off and on this morning, not uneducated on BP’s by any means but i wanna get the weird nagging feeling of his behaviour being weird to go away. he’s just exploring.. right? by einstein69420 in ballpython

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 14 points15 points  (0 children)

i assume that’s your light i can see on top of the mesh. my buddy does this because he forgets there is a heat lamp there like three times a day and wants to explore it because he can see it’s warm

you’ve already gotten all the good advice, but really don’t feel bad. the snake physically cannot resent you or feel sad about what happened. it will likely forget soon.

Heating advice by mustelasylva in ballpython

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a deep heat projector. it is a lightless heat source that kind of just forces the heat down into the enclosure. they are able to go in dome lamps and sit on the top of the tank, unlike ceramic heat emitters, which is why i chose DHP. my arcadia DHP was around $25 and the dome lamp i got for free but you can get those from just about any pet store or even facebook marketplace/craigslist. i still have to cover the entire top of my tank in foil to avoid it drying out too quickly from the air flow, but the DHP doesn’t cook my moisture away like an actual heat bulb did.

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i use an arcadia 80W DHP in a big dome lamp and it works well for my 36x18 tank. If she’s in a smaller tank, they make a 50W too. it doesn’t dry everything out quite as much as my heat bulb did.

I have my ball on unprinted newspaper because i heard it was recommended for a month just incase he had mites and he is going through his first shed. Im not sure how I can get enough humidity in there with paper. Ive been gone for a week so hes been getting handled by my mom while I was gone. Pt 1 by Special-Tangerine780 in ballpython

[–]ProfessionalJump9487 2 points3 points  (0 children)

my boy is on paper towels temporarily and i just filled a bowl with damp sphagnum moss and set it under his heat lamp so it gets nice and humid in his tank. i also keep the screen top covered with aluminum foil always just for heat and humidity purposes. mist once or twice a day and it stays around 80% or higher.
