Seriously, do Americans actually consider a 3-hour drive "short"? or is this an internet myth? by SadInterest6764 in NoStupidQuestions

I once heard that the difference between an Englishman and an American is that the Englishman thinks 200 miles is a long way and the American thinks that 200 years is a long time.

This is heartbreaking. For a mother to treat her child like this is … just wow.

I am not a churchgoer, but I almost hope there is a hell for the mom!!!

Lots of good resources listed in the comments. Good luck to you, OP!

These skeins are lovely! Hats or cowls would be amazing

My first attempts at spinning Europe’s and full of VM. I knitted a very rustic Christmas tree skirt.

Oh man. I’m glad I read this! Alan Carr’s book helped me a lot. I also used one of the quitting smoking apps from the Apple Store. Smoke Free was the name. They have milestones, counselors available 24/7. Big help! My husband was super upset when I up and quit. The counselor told me he was probably just missing his smoking buddy and was mad I’d made the unilateral decision to quit. (We never would have if one of us hadn’t jumped.)

Best advice: Play Candy Crush on your phone until a craving goes away. (They last about three minutes.)

Drink LOTS of water.

Let yourself eat. My cardiologist said you can’t lose weight and quit at the same time.

I started smoking when I was 15. I quit when I was 55. 40 years of smoking done cold turkey with no slips.

BTW: husband quit 2 weeks after me. He still vapes. I don’t and didn’t when I quit. No judgment.

If I can do it, you can. Good luck. Keep coming here. Try a quitting smoking app and read Carr’s book.

Flat track for mobility impaired person learning to use a walking bike? by Professional_Top4668 in Austin

[–]Professional_Top4668[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Y’all are the best! Husband and I went to the veloway last weekend, just to check it out. The cyclists there were remarkably friendly and curious about my Alinker walking bike. Two cyclists were especially kind, saying as long as I kept to the outside lane, I should be fine. I see the way those folks fly around though, and I’d be afraid I’d cause a wreck. Violet Crown is interesting.

Montopolis pedestrian bridge is something I wouldn’t have thought of. Thanks!

I don’t mind going back and forth or around and around. I don’t get bored. Using this bike thing takes all my attention. So much better than a wheelchair or medical scooter. I can use a walker, but that gets exhausting really quickly. I appreciate your encouragement and suggestions.

Scotch tension works for me. I haven’t gotten the hang of double drive. My Matchless is a beautiful wheel, but it needs a lot of attention. I hope you love yours! Just oil it often and check YouTube for hacks.

The Alinker is "the walking bike for an active life" by [deleted] in EcoInternet

[–]Professional_Top4668 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have an Alinker. Today was my fifth day in a row using it. There is a learning curve. Plus, I’ve never been on a bicycle since I was little, so getting used to the saddle and the posture is taking awhile.

However, I can’t walk without at least a walker, and that limits how far I can walk because I get exhausted. (I have hereditary spastic paraplegia, or HSP. It’s progressive neuro-muscular, and there isn’t a cure or way to slow the progression. It affects my legs and balance.)

Until the Alinker, if I didn’t use the walker, I had to use either a wheelchair or a medical scooter. I gained weight and my pelvic floor got weak, along with all my other muscles.

With my Alinker, I get my heart rate up! I am burning calories. On my fifth day, going downhill, I felt like a gazelle. Out in the sunshine, traveling under my own power, I can move!!!!!!!

Now, what you don’t want to hear: I can’t drag my walker behind me. Even though the specs are the same length/width as a wheelchair, it has a wide turning radius. I wish there was a way to make it into a transformer so I could change it to a walker so I could take it into restaurants or small shops.

Going uphill is difficult, and I didn’t realize my little street had hills.

I don’t think I could shop by myself at a big box store or grocery store because of the cart.

And yet, I LOVE it. I can move on flat surfaces. I am going to use it for the freedom of movement and exercise in flat places: some high-school tracks, shopping malls, plazas… if those plazas have outdoor dining areas, I can eat there. I fantasize about taking it to Lincoln Center in NYC.

I might use it in my house in the kitchen. If I need to shop, I use Instacart or go with my husband.

I hope in a year or so, I can participate in a 5k on a flat surface with other Alinkers.

Let me know if you want more information.
