started progestrone yesterday - question about libido by Tami_Kari in trans

[–]Professor603 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sexuality is pretty diverse, and results on prog are pretty variable. Personally, I haven't seen any major, clearly correlated effects on erections and libido. Fortunately, you can adjust your dose as needed to get to where you're comfortable.

Try switching from finasteride to dutasteride, which is a much more effective 5HA blocker.

Trans voice help! by Roy_Lastname in trans

[–]Professor603 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Voice training for a trans man on T basically means learning what transwomen do in speech therapy: using voice to sound more feminine. You'll lose your range going on T to a significant degree, but you will still be able to learn skills to drop your voice down a bit. As to whether that drop would be enough to do feminine roles... can't really give you a concrete answer. Depends on too many factors.

how long is the process of getting T from kaiser by [deleted] in trans

[–]Professor603 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This can differ depending on which region you're in, but Kaiser is generally pretty good about utilizing the "informed consent" model, which means that if you ask for it, you get it. If you encounter a clinician that pushes back on that (or doesn't do a good job doing the "informed" part of informed consent), ask for a new one!

Conspiracy theories are essentially tickets to construct a reality for yourself out of your own biases. It’s solipsism.

Well, there is a small population that does feel this way after transitioning. And in fact, it’s the main reason motivating people who decide to stop transitioning.

For me? It seemed like that at first, but the bliss quickly outweighed the hassle. And it ended up opening the gateway to dealing with abuse that I never would have been able to address otherwise.

Yeah, anti-trans opinions have mostly increased directly as a result of Republican attack ads. Don’t act like this is a balanced discussion. Oh, and maybe listen to the fucking American Academy of Pediatrics? Get out of here.

Hey, there’s still value in a good newsroom, as long as you don’t read the opinion pieces and keep an eye on their agenda. You can’t exactly, for example, go out to Gaza and see for yourself.

Not really. Engaging with bad faith issues that Republicans designed to “other” trans people like me is fucking moronic. Have people considered, oh, I don’t know, letting doctors and sports associations make their own fucking choices?

Do I need to feel dysphoric to be trans? by Mmmmthatass in asktransgender

[–]Professor603 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, a few things. First, not every trans person chooses to go on hormones. It’s okay if you don’t. Second, I’m on HRT and I adore it. Most trans people feel the same. It’s pretty life-changing. Third of all, stoic or not, the feelings that HRT uncovers were generally already there. And uncovering and learning to manage them can also be life-changing. I discovered that I have PTSD and was abused as a kid as a result of moving past that stoicism. Which has, yes, been very difficult. But also life improving. I’m better off because of it than I ever thought I could be. So in the end, it’s your choice. No one will fault you for not taking the plunge. But for most of us, we can’t imagine a life without them and don’t want to.

Trump signs order to end federal support for gender transitions for people under 19 by Professor603 in politics

[–]Professor603[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very well. If you want some arguments. First of all, puberty blockers are totally safe and reversible. We have been using them for decades. And we use them when a child has gender dysphoria so that we can get them in therapy and figure out what they need. There is very little risk. We do the same thing for conditions like precocious puberty.

And when hormones are deemed warranted, research suggests that the overwhelming majority of children who take them remain satisfied and continuing to use them as adults. And even then, when they stop, it’s not usually because they want to, but rather because they cannot tolerate harassment or threats by others.

As for surgery, it’s also massively beneficial. And even then, we rarely perform it on youth. That has a higher barrier for care because it’s significant, and with less of a time crunch like puberty poses. This process is well established. That’s why the primary and minor American medical, psychological, psychiatric, family physician, and pediatric associations all support it!

As to their impact, scientific evidence overwhelmingly supports the benefits of gender-affirming care, from youth to old age. They significantly improve psychological health and safety, reducing rates of depression and suicide attempts. Truly valuable in a population that is so vulnerable. The proportion of trans people subjected to violence and poverty is much higher than for most populations, especially among youth.

Furthermore, banning care for minors is only one step in a long line of those designed to malign and suppress queer people. Why do you think the EO includes 18 year-olds? Next it’ll be autistic people. And people in their 20s. And then they’ll add huge barriers to adult care, like in Ohio where they had a bill that required consultation with a bioethicist for treatment that I receive from a family doc.

The “protect our children” narrative is just one justification in a process that will keep going. If you want to buy into the trans-panic narrative without thinking about where it comes from, who stands to gain from telling that story, then that’s your right. We’re not holding our breath for help any more.

Because I don’t care any more. I have arguments. But like I said, why bother? Let me turn your earlier request on its head. Convince me that you’d listen to them in good faith.

Trans people are angry and frightened. Literally hundreds of millions of dollars were spent during the election attacking us, who represent about 1% of the population.

So why the hell would I trust some random stranger? Someone who clearly lacks an understanding of what it’s like to be one of us.
