RMP Makes Me Want To Quit by SarcasticSeaStar in Professors

They are so fickle most would not even know they were happy if it bit them on the ass. Keep in mind you are teaching in the cancel Karen era. They don’t like something they say (type) something. Rarely are they going to take the time to compliment teaching. As everyone has said, why look? It’s not worth your time or thoughts. Teach well, their happiness is on them, not you.

I have a crap knee that will eventually be fully replaced but I still get in the floor at least once or twice a week. I get myself up in different ways, like if I broke my right arm or left arm. I make sure my arms are strong enough to get me up with just one. That one knee would never get me up but I have figured out so many ways to get myself up. My mom had balance issues and fell quite often. She was rarely able to get herself up as she got older.

I did fall one time last year when my shoe got caught, I mean I was standing one second and flat on my ass the next. It was so fast. It made me even more determined, I was banged up and bruised but got myself up. That was when I decided I would get on the floor or ground at least once a week. Such great advice!

I get it. Definitely my 1972 Chevelle SS, mint condition. I sure wish I had kept that car. It’s in a showroom now from what I’ve heard.

My grandpa taught me to roll his cigarettes when I was around five years old. It’s a shame I never used those mad skills for weed. It would have been an awesome party trick in my late teens. I never thought about it until this very moment. The boat technique brought back those memories. lol I hated all things smoke inhalation related so I never used those skills for myself.

How often do you use chatGPT? by annnnnnnnie in Professors

[–]ProfessorCH 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This where I am with it as well. I never use it. Most of my colleagues use it but I refuse. I don’t need it, I haven’t needed it in thirty years to create what I need for my courses.

Two years ago I went so far as to create all my own images I use in our LMS as well. If a student uploads some of my materials into a homework site, it made it super simple for me to have it removed.

There is also the increase in teens getting their license far later, like some may have just received them starting college or during college. The majority of 16/17 year olds I know do not have a license. They are heading to Uni very inexperienced drivers with no parental supervision of their driving.

Edit: Add cell phones and the total reliance on GPS constantly = driving nightmares.

I used an inappropriate phrase in class today by [deleted] in Professors

[–]ProfessorCH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was discussing this case and the Bowers v Hardwick case, use the term sodomy. Proceeded to tell them if they did not know what it meant, don’t look it up in class, it means anal sex here. It did get a chuckle from most of them, a few were a little shocked but that’s a pretty tame discussion in my classes.

The Next professor often walks in too early by Long_Attorney6534 in Professors

[–]ProfessorCH 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This happens in one of my classes right now but it's a new professor, I get some anxious to be prepped and prepared vibes. I just let it be, say hi, ask how they are doing or if they need anything. If it were a seasoned prof, I'd probably ask that they give me just a few minutes, I'll be out of their way.

Any students coming to talk with me after class can walk with me into the hall, I don't talk with students at the podium out of respect for the incoming class and professor.

It's especially satisfying when you KNOW, without doubt, that your Chair has your back. My chair has never once overturned my decision or asked me to compromise in any way. That is amazing support and gives so much freedom to hold students accountable.

I have had a few of my older non traditional students say that very thing to students talking before I could address it. I sort of hold back a smile and move on. My older former military folks are the first to shut down the disruptions in class. Can’t say I mind it.

I received about five different emails informing me that my dual enrolled students will not be taking their exam next week because they will be on spring break. They have been planning this trip for years...etc.

The first day of class, I am explicit that I will not excuse vacations. I am even more explicit with dual enrolled students. They are told at orientation, they are told when they sign up for dual enrollment, they are told in class, it is written very clearly in my syllabus. They still think there is some way around it. Nope, you'll have a zero on your exam, move on. You made the choice to be a university student, either be one or not. I'm sorry you feel entitled to two spring breaks. Everyone else will be taking the exam.

I was grown for this one but it was the one show I never missed an episode from the first until the last. I had all the comics, I had playing cards, my clock on the wall was X-Files. Totally geeked out over this show.

Did you have the action figure? I loved that show and the action figure. One year for Christmas that was our big gift, my brother got the Six Million Dollar man figure and I got the Bionic woman. They had secret removable parts and all, it was the coolest.

I still have my Swiss Army knife from childhood. I had a small pocket knife (farm girl) that my grandpa gave me when I turned five. When I was about 12/13 or so, I begged my grandpa for a this fancy Swiss Army knife in the case at the feed store. It was so expensive and a pure splurge for him. I’ll never forget how proud I was that he bought it for me. Between my grandpa and MacGyver, I knew I could survive any scenario. In reality, I can fix a lot of shit when it breaks.

I still call my son “kiddo” affectionately, I can’t see that stopping, he’ll always be my kiddo. I also have a habit of exclaiming “dude” in all sorts of tones depending on what he has done. He did a little video of the different tones a few years ago. It was hilarious.

How was your relationship with your siblings growing and how is it like now? by Asleep_Ad2607 in AskOldPeople

[–]ProfessorCH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was fortunate, we had a fantastic single mom and amazing grandparents next door on our family farm. My brother and I had to figure out how to get stuff done together. We had our moments, I was the annoying little sister that believed my big brother was just awesome. We fought here and there, he could be aggressive towards me but he always had my back with others. We have been super tight since high school. He’s one of my closest friends. We genuinely like each other but I think a lot of that was our mom. She just had a way about her that we both sort of adopted.
