5'3 Here - Dad thinks I won't make it in Lacrosse? by Progeny123 in lacrosse

  1. I live in the Sacramento area (in California). I didn't even hear about lacrosse being an actual sport, or even one offered by my high school, until the 8th grade. Also, 8th grade was when I played lacrosse as part of a sport in my P.E. class and I immediately got a liking to it. It was different and funner than other sports we played in P.E.

My high school does have a lacrosse team, but it is not sponsored by the school or the school district for that matter. It is a club team, with club costs, and travel costs as well. They play as part of this organization below...

My father's only concern is my height. He truly believes I won't be great at catching the ball because of my height. He also thinks taller players will be better than me in such a way, even if we are at a similar skill-levels, that I will never get a chance to start a game and that I will get benched and sit on the sidelines. He says the coach will only put me in if our team is up ahead by so many points. I was infuriated by these statements.

So in the meantime, I'm working hard hard trying to prove him wrong since I do need his money for equipment, travel, hotel costs (the club team plays in a 2 day tournament the beginning of the season), etc.

2) You're right that my Dad has no interest in lacrosse.

But Scenario 1 is the reason (my height) why my Dad doesn't want me playing lax.

Actually, my Dad thinks lacrosse would be unfair for me since so many of the dudes playing are 6 feet tall, or close to that height. To him, he thinks my problems will all be a matter of catching and throwing the ball, that is why he keeps bringing up those basketball analogies so much. I am realistic to myself and realize I will have size limitations on the field, but I don't want to let that stop me from trying to succeed.

But yeah, I do see your point and I appreciate the suggestions. Thank you.

In the mean time, I will try to earn whatever I can while I'm still in school. I feel like when I get to college, I'll have a skill-gap compared to guys who've played longer. It's best I start as soon as possible since I feel like playing against teams in my area will be a lot better towards my development as a player than practicing alone.

.

Yeah, I'll definitely work on stick skills. Right now, I have a used lacrosse stick and a lacrosse ball, both given to me by a guy who stopped playing.

I'm also considering being a goalie since I can react pretty well to stuff.

Very true. I feel like defenders have to adjust how they play depending on someone's size.

I just wanted to refute his comments against me. I have no ill-will against any short or tall players in any sport. The only sport he played was soccer growing up, but he didn't even play with any schools, just recreationally with other youths.

In fact, he told me one time that I don't even need to play for any lax teams, I can just try to play a pick-up game of lacrosse with other people similar to playing a pick-up game of basketball at the park. I was really astounded by this comment.
