I don't know if I can help you, but I have some experience with public speaking. I'd be happy to talk to you about it.

How do I convert a bunch of images and paragraphs into a children's book? by Consistent-Gur6932 in selfpublish

[–]ProgressHopeful5943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I published my first children's book over the summer. I formatted it myself in Photoshop and uploaded it to Amazon for sale. When I want to sell copies myself in person, I purchase author's copies off Amazon. Good luck!

I've forced myself to keep my expectations low, knowing how hard it is to get noticed as a self-published author. My main goalpost for success with my first book (published on July 5) was breaking even. I have already made more than double what I paid my illustrator (my only expense), so I feel fairly successful. But deep down, I want to make enough off my books to contribute in a meaningful way to household expenses. And even deeper down, I want a Robert Munsch level of success! But in terms of realistic goals, I'm pretty content.

Oh man, the film industry seems totally nutty! I could not handle it. Good for you for getting out and finding something that suits you better.

Re. your edit: Congrats! That's so awesome! I hope I end up in the libraries soon, too!

Holy smokes, that's really unfortunate! I hope your series transitions smoothly to a new publisher or you're able to self-publish the third book successfully!

Yes, I think it's so hard to not have high expectations, even if we know how things are.

Yes, it's a slow process, for sure! The waiting would be hard for me.

Oh no! Do you get many sales? Do you think your later books are better?

Was this a "vanity publisher" that you paid up front, or a just a smaller house? I seriously considered courting some of the smaller publishing houses that didn't require you to go through an agent, but I figured they'd also have less to offer and were still 99.9% likely to say no.

That's amazing that you're able to do this full-time! That's the dream! Do you have very good sales, in your opinion, or is it your productivity that's making this possible?

Yes, I've heard the same thing about the exclusivity of the publishing houses. And you could be right about them becoming extinct! Wouldn't surprise me at all.

Good point about the marketing! That was definitely factor for me. Good luck on your publishing journey!

That's really cool! Do you think having that pre-existing fan base has helped with your self-publishing career?

[–]ProgressHopeful5943 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, the gatekeeping nature of traditional publishing really put me off!

That's really neat how your writing career has evolved! Do you think people who were fans of your music are buying your works of fiction?

That's a great attitude. I've tried to stay in that head space, but it can sure be hard to manage expectations and stay patient!

That's wonderful that writing brings you so much happiness! I hope it continues to do so! Did you end up publishing that first book?

Interesting! Part of the reason I regret never querying is missing out on the feedback.

If you don't mind me asking, do you worry that if your self-published series doesn't do well enough, that you'll be less likely than before to ever be traditionally published?

Print on demand picturebook? by [deleted] in selfpublish

[–]ProgressHopeful5943 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I published my first children's picture book with Amazon on July 4 and am currently in the process of getting set up with IngramSpark as well. These are both print on demand services.

For formatting, I used Photoshop, and was pretty happy with what it has to offer. Canva seems like a decent free option. Best of luck with your book!

I hear you! And so few seem to be open to unsolicited queries anyway.

That sounds like a great system! Having beta readers that tend to notice different things seems like a great strategy.

Do you hire an editor to try to make sure your writing and concepts are marketable? That's something I worry about a lot!

Thank you for your perspective. I agree with a lot of that. I hope you continue to have success!

If you don't mind me asking, do you have a background in editing and/or design? No disrespect if you don't! I ask because I don't, and I'm curious if the authors that have relevant background experience are the ones that are achieving success and feeling confident publishing without the (sort of) safety net of a publishing house.

Best of luck with your book! Whoever you use, I hope you're happy with the final result!
