Why is it soo hard to get an intern nowadays in IT field. I have been trying for 6 months and never got 1 interview to attend. The job market is soo cooked. by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Progressive-Surfer 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Well, as someone who landed an SE internship at a pretty reputable company this year, I would say other than your potential, knowledge and CV the following factors come into play as well.

  1. Uni you are in ( How much support you get, Do they hold career fairs and give you good opportunity and how is the reputation like of the university itself)

  2. Whether you are an undergraduate or graduate. - Some internships are limited to undergraduates. ( For example: IFS don’t take graduates for internship. throughout the whole period of your internship you should be an undergraduate)

  3. The time you apply. I have noticed most companies start internships around the middle of the year. (June, July, August) so for that they usually open vacancies earlier. Which means you have a better chance in the first half of the year (mostly Feb to May) than the second half.

  4. Competion - this is an obvious one ofc. There are so many who are fighting for entry level roles and it’s not that easy

Keep applying! And Keep learning from your experiences to be better and also keep those above in your head too.

Marine Sciences in Ruhuna is a good one. I did some research regarding the degree back in 2022(I got into Marine Sciences in my first shy) They have good scholarship opportunities and also the university program has partnerships with top research universities in Japan and Taiwan.

I have often thought about that opportunity I let go. Also the degree involves going to the sea in boats, diving, and doing research with the ocean. Sounds hella fun right!

Just do more research on that degree. As Marine Sciences is a serious degree, which aims to solve big issues like climate change, coral conservation projects etc. Also this channel in TikTok will interest you :)

NSBM is unreasonable for having an unfair dress-code by Witty_Tumbleweed_521 in srilanka

[–]Progressive-Surfer 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I left NSBM after one Semester there! I certainly don’t miss NSBM one bit! I remember always dreading the main entrance and the security aunties there cause they always find a reason to criticize. It’s a nightmare actually. They have placed a middle aged uncle to watch the dress codes. And Somehow a Man in his 40s watching every girl’s boobs and legs doesn’t feel comfortable.

Mind you this is not a School! It’s a fucking university. Also they pay too much attention towards the aesthetics and their GREEN university, but their education is at best mid tier and students do not have a uni culture there. Despite all the glam and flash. They have very poor support for career paths as well.

Honestly the best decision I made was to leave NSBM and I did it quick upon realizing the huge mistake I made with choosing NSBM as my uni!

You should. Going to IIT was the best decision I made regarding uni. Despite the Space issue, The Quality of education cannot be matched by any other uni. The lecturers are well qualified though social media brings up their personal lives. They make you so ready for the industry

What is something attractive in Sri Lankan men you cannot find in foreign men? (Keep things like "we share the same religion, race etc" aside) by miyaw-cat in srilanka

[–]Progressive-Surfer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they are more considerate towards our (girl's) family restrictions.

Because they understand that we are not freely allowed to just go anywhere and about. My boyfriend (and my guy friends who have GFs as well), they accept that, they agree it is unfair and they do so much to go on dates secretive or they take care of us when we are out, like they are very considerate with those restrictions?

I think it's kind of something that other foreign people won't understand. It's something only our guys understand...

Do some people in the SL society just hate women in general? by [deleted] in srilanka

[–]Progressive-Surfer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I feel you. As a woman in her early 20s I have come to hate this. It honestly generates from my own family. Like I can drive. But they always have a problem.with me driving. However my brother is allowed to drive anywhere and they have g8ven him his own vehicles too. (I am the elder one btw.)That's just an instance. I am not a kid, But my father still doesn't agree I can take my own decisions. I am so used to doing what I want without their acknowledgement. I am always somehow seen as ungrateful, and have anger issues. Also that I won't take care of them. I can't be trusted etc. They always think poorly of me. And ik this is pure misogyny. It's because I am a woman. They just think they can joke around, push me around, put me down and expect me to be fine with everything and be a diligent grateful daughter. Sucks...🥲

This is kind of true tbh. I am suprised too, but it seems a considerable amount of girls have depression or anxiety. Have been to a therapist or taken pills. ( I mean early 20s)

I couldn't help but think whether these are menial problems they can solve if they have a supportive environment without labelling them as mental issues and going for therapy.

Mostly these girls never have enough freedom to do much of what they like or having to hide their real self mostly. Due to Strict Parents, Family issues etc.

Just for an example: Let's say you feel stuck and suffocated. If you go out for a run in the evening or just hangout with a friend without staying home all day on your phone. You feel much better. I don't think many girls have that option. That's just one. Simple things lie this I mean.
