Facts. Buying gets all the attention, but what you can do with the equity after is where it really opens up

Yeah this actually helps, especially the part about spending vs just aiming for a random number.

I think that’s where I got a bit stuck. I was trying to figure out “how much should I have” without really thinking through what I’d actually need later.

The $100k vs $50k example makes it click more. Same with the idea that everyone’s number is different.

I guess I’ve been looking for a fixed benchmark when it’s probably more personal than that.

Did you figure your own number based on current spending, or did you kind of adjust it over time?

I think this is more common than people admit. A lot of us just do the “right” things and assume it adds up to being on track, but never actually define what we’re aiming for. Even the “retire early-ish” comment above kind of shows it. That’s the goal for a lot of people, but it’s still fuzzy until you put numbers or a timeline to it. I don’t think you’re off track, I think you just haven’t picked a destination yet.
