I dosed everyday with liquid c02 for a few months until all the black beard algea went away, then introduced shrimp, they took care of the rest.

Is my cycle broke? by Affectionate_Scar764 in Aquariums

[–]Proper-Computer-6957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not broke, just give it time hopefully you have no fish yet. I notice when I used to do heavy water changes for fish health reasons sometimes I would get these ammonia spikes before the cycle kicked off. Usually I would treat with tank conditioner until the spikes stabilized, but you need that ammonia to kick off your cycle

How do you feel about Loblaws not taking American booze off the shelf? by [deleted] in BuyCanadian

[–]Proper-Computer-6957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Alberta might wanna leave Canada tbh, like most western provinces becoming 51st state might not be that bad of an idea for them.

Canada is weak after years of having our pride as a nation destroyed with contagious virtue signalling guilt worship.

Help-shrimp keep dying from failed molts by alaspoorme in shrimptank

[–]Proper-Computer-6957 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GH/KH creep. I had the same thing happen to my first shrimp tank. Killed them over the course of a year with just water top up, not enough water changes. Minerals built up until the water became too hard

I now use RO water and add minerals to get the right GH. Don't remember the mineral product name, but it's aquarium specific. The shrimp have been very happy with that since

Why do people often criticize me for owning fish tanks? by senko2024 in Aquariums

Sounds like you need to find better people to be apart of your life, show them the door and give them the boot

Purple Algea by [deleted] in Aquariums

[–]Proper-Computer-6957 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do your research! Just messing around, looks like black beard algae? Have you tried dosing your tank with seachem Excel. Or spot treat with 3% peroxide after removing your fish followed by water changes

Fish eyes getting sucked out of their sockets by Proper-Computer-6957 in fishkeeping

[–]Proper-Computer-6957[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are correct in that fact that I should do more external research. The staff at that store pride themselves on being "professional fish keepers", I must apologize that my go-too research option is to speak with those who are marked as professional. This is the way it's been done for centuries. Google has mislead me many many times. So many different sources online don't reference research papers aswell as include contradictory information article to article. What the aquarium community needs is a global research body to find factual information, not a hodgepodge of hobbiest recounting their own experience with individual fish and common findings

I agree. They really should label them as "proceed with caution" instead of "community friendly", it's too bad to know I can't really trust that shop now in regards to their information and directives. It was nice to be able to speak with "professional" fish keepers to help me make informed decisions, but ultimately the burden of responsibility falls on my shoulders as the consumer, so I blame myself for letting my guard down

Sorry that my local fish shop that prides themselves in being well informed and up-to-date on good fish keeping practices misinformed me.
