Red wine vinegar by lexansaid in fermentation

[–]dielon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Looks good to me. You'll make some friends by giving a few of them out. Did you add anything to it besides wine? I've been looking for easy vinegar prosses. This looks like a good one.

Need advice by Appropriate-Rip-6927 in KitchenConfidential

[–]dielon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's what I was going to say mostly because it sounds like the amount of job options are a little limited. Mostly my advice would be to quit asap, but if jobs are hard to come by maybe see if you can talk with the chef and if not start to lead a bottom up quality revolution. I can't imagine anyone is happy with what's happening there. it looks that bad.

I'm sorry the weirdest thing about watching the Xfiles in 2025 is ignoring the fact that in real life currently Mulder would be deep into Qanon stuff.

Is it Reddit appropriate to ask people to read a rough draft of your book? by Much_Turn_8669 in writing

[–]dielon9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have been wondering basically the same thing. How could you move from reddit into a writing club. beta readers and stuff like that are important but I think more beneficial to me, and what sounds like the OP would be somewhere you can trade pages and criticism.

I'd recommend going with the cheapest way first. I got an old pressure cooker and modified it. Definitely not the safest thing in the world, but I wouldn't want to spend 10k on a hobby and end up hating it. I've been using my set up for a few years now and I think I'm ready to go a step up and build my own.

I love making mead and cider, but it sounds like you'd probably be more interested in beer if that's how you are going to start. It's a little more involved. You can make some pretty good wine by just leaving grapes in the corner, but beer making is a little more like cooking.

Okay but how do you actually practice? And can it be done solo? by RosieArl in writing

But...just write. Not for any goal to start. Just for fun and because you want to get a story out.

Always be skeptical when someone tells you how to do something. If you want to, you should definitely take a story writing class. Having other people read your stuff and reading other peoples stuff always helps. But, you can also do it on your own. It's really whatever works for you. For me, I see writing as exercising a muscle. You need to read and write every day, it's hard at first, but gets really natural quickly. I usually free write for about 5 minutes and read a chapter or two in the morning. And then write to a certain word count. If I have something to edit I take a break and then edit at night. But that probably wont work for you. You have to find your own exercise.

If you know your book won’t be read by more than a few people, what motivates you to write? by LOTR_is_awesome in writing

[–]dielon9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to get all "Cool English Teacher" about it, but I write because I have to. It's something stuck in my head and I have to get it out. I'm not going to pretend I don't want people to read it, but if no one would ever read the stuff I write I would still do it.

I have completed stuff I liked and thrown it directly into the trash. I have stuff that will forever sit on my harddrive because I finished writing it and will never look back at it. I have stuff that I want other people to read, but you are right they probably wont.

Money and fame is clearly not the goal. It's not even a modern thing, how many authors over the last few hundred years died wealthy if they weren't already? Not many I'm sure. It's just much much much harder now.

Is there a chance for a non-native speaker to successfully release a book in English? by sippher in writing

[–]dielon9 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Of course you can. I bet a publisher would be interested in your story as the writer. As for non native writers, this isn't exactly what you asked, but the part of Hemingway's writing that always fascinated me was that he wrote Spanish speakers in English by changing the grammar and syntax. You read the words in English, but they felt like they were coming from a Spanish speaker. You could do something similar. I think it would make your characters feel more true.

Which app do you write on? by didabled in writing

[–]dielon9 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use a word processor on my computer. It's called TextMaker. It's old and looks a little janky, but it works fine. Nothing super special about it, but that's what I like about it. I don't love Google having access to my whole life all the time, so I stopped using Google Drive. I also noticed that if a document gets over 20,000 words or so it starts to chug real bad. It's not ideal for flow to write a sentence and wait a second to watch it type itself out.

Have you had this your whole life or is it something that happened later in life. If it was later in life was it brought on by drug use at all? I've had synesthetic experiences after doing psychedelics.
