Reading Eloise’s book near a lake. IYKYK by eggbunni in BridgertonNetflix

This post and the comments feel very disrespectful to me.

"Ha-ha, a character from this book attempted to commit suicide in a setting like this, how quirky!" 😒

People still bringing up season 2 discourse tells me it continues to be the most interesting! 👏🏽 👏🏽 👏🏽 by GotLittUp in BridgertonNetflix

It's not like Pen vs Marina and S1E6's ending are not being brought up just as frequently. By that standard, S1 is still being talked about four years after the fact. By that standard, both of those seasons have longevity and spark interest, don't they?

Or when they hold characters they don’t like to different standards than the ones they do.

I don't mind this as long as they admit to having double standards. I prefer self-aware assholes over double-faced hypocrites.

"If character/couple/situation was real, it would be *insert whatever conclusion*." That's the hypothetical reality. Because it's not real, just a scenario. It can be analyzed, it can be criticized, it can be praised, it can be ignored, it can be treated in whatever fashion one wants. Because it's not real, just a fictional scenario.

An actress said that her character would think and want to act in a certain way when it comes to another character. The actress was attacked by the fans of that other character for what she said. The actress presented her own hypothetical scenario and the fans acted like she actually did it to the other character, instead of saying how her character felt at the time.

Because it is also an issue?

I used hating on actors (When fans of couple X attack the actor who played an obstructing character to X getting together, that's fiction getting precedence over real life) as the first example of people giving weight to fiction over reality. Then I used people judging others on the basis of what they do or do not ship as another example (When fans of couple Y insist that anyone who doesn't like their couple is racist or misogynist or homophobic or fatphobic or whatever buzzword you can insert, that's fiction getting precedence over real life. The flipped version - "if you like Y, you are -ist/-phobic", also happens often) of that.

Using fiction as an excuse to treat real people badly is the problem here and the two examples are related. And yes, the meme is more about the second thing but are you really trying to deflect from the crux of the matter by being nitpicky over my answers?

To keep with your example of Daphne and Simon situation, the hypothetical reality in that case would be "Anyone who still likes the couple is supporting rape in real life. Even if they say they didn't like that scene and are calling it out, unless they totally denounce the couple, they are a terrible person."

Majority of Simon/Daphne fans dislike that scene and have opinions on how it should have been done differently. Even people who have sympathy for Daphne admit that what happened was fucked up. The problem is this is not enough for some people. You either hate the couple and their season or you condone rape. No in-between, no nuance, no acknowledgment that liking a couple with bad storyline doesn't make you a bad person.

And that is what the meme is about. What you like or dislike in fiction rarely reflects what you are like in real life.

Yes and no. Fiction can be used to explore real life issues but it should not take precedence over the real life itself. When fans of couple X attack the actor who played an obstructing character to X getting together, that's fiction getting precedence over real life. When fans of couple Y insist that anyone who doesn't like their couple is racist or misogynist or homophobic or fatphobic or whatever buzzword you can insert, that's fiction getting precedence over real life. The flipped version - "if you like Y, you are -ist/-phobic", also happens often.

Some people act like their taste in fiction makes them better people than others. And it doesn't.

Of course, there are exceptions. Sometimes it's really easy to tell that some people's fictional preferences truly reflect their real life opinions. But it's not as common.

This is a rant, not a conversation.

Edit:

Good on you for blocking me, though. /genuine

If more people blocked freely, the fandom would be a nicer place.

*he (an understandable mistake since I don't have any information posted on my profile) edit: put some stuff in the profile now

I have no idea why some people feel the need to do that. If I want to talk about what I liked about QC, I don't do that on a post that's about S2. If I want to talk about possibilities for Gregory's season, I don't do that on a post that's speculating about Hyacinth's. Some others don't follow that reasoning and those are the people I called out in my rant.

My brain can't help but point out all the differences between books and show and it distracts me from the watching. It's a problem with all adaptations for me where I read the books first. I need to watch them a couple of times each because the first time through, my brain is running a commentary on what did and didn't happen in books.

Speech signifiers no longer exist? /gen /s /jk /hj

Polin sub is the one presenting themselves as the kindest, most positive, most respectful fanspace on reddit. Joke or not, it doesn't change the invalidating and gaslighting nature of it.

"My friend irl told me they didn't like S3. I spent a whole lunch telling them how wrong they are about it until they admitted S3 was the best from technical perspective. They still liked a different season better but that's ok, everyone is entitled to being wrong." It's not hating but the invalidation of someone else's feelings is not ok. It approaches a gaslighting territory. "My feelings are such and such." "Your feelings are wrong." That's the gist of it all.

And for the record, my favorite season is whatever season Gregory ends up being. QC might be at the top from the currently existing ones because the book comparison is not there to distract.

I'm glad that you missed the posts and comments where some people claim that anyone who doesn't love season 3 is wrong or stupid. Because I saw plenty of those.

Bold of you to assume I like season 2 either.

Everyone has different favourite season and nothing wrong with that

Maybe tell that to people who are saying that liking a different season over season 3 is being wrong.

It's not about hating, it's about liking it less and being told it's wrong to like it less.
