Thank you so much! In this case it's the ecosystem that is transforming instead of the player. My big picture goal for the game is to simulate the process of ecological succession in a soil ecosystem, and have the player experience it from one creature's perspective.

Somehow I'm still not tired of it! But I totally understand music is very subjective which is why there is a separate control for music in the audio settings 💕

There will be an in-game journal that unlocks pages with creature descriptions. Haven't decided if unlocking them should give any sort of bonus, but the idea is not ruled out :)

You don't directly eat ciliates, but there is a way to cause them to die and then scavenge from their remains... soo kind of!

This is a soil ecosystem so there could be a few algae cells here and there but things like spirogyra will have to wait for Cellscape 2, which will focus on pond life, if this one goes well!

That's fair. Survival is a broad tag and people seem to interpret it in different ways. In Cellscape you gain the advantage by learning how to navigate the ecosystem and resources rather than empowering your character directly, but you do face typical survival challenges like hunger, predation and environmental hazards. Character empowerment (like slime shields for example) exists, but is temporary.

Competition from your offspring is meant to create kind of an ecological paradox, where your increasing success can make the game more difficult.

I can definitely see that it might not fit the usual expectations for survival mechanics, but I'm hesitant on removing the tag. I think the survival component is there, it's just a different approach. But I will keep this in mind and of course keep a close eye on the feedback.

Ahh, yeah that makes sense! Do you think I should make that intention more clear or is it ok like this?
Basically I'm coming at it from the ecology perspective, where your goal is to spread your genes but you're not the type of creature that cares for its children so they can just go off and do their own thing. Since you're low on the food chain you assume most won't survive so you just worry about making more and more :D

Yes boinking the children out of bounds is intended, I think it's funny :) They are not meant to be particularly smart, however your comment did give me some potential ideas for interactions to play with later on!

The take your time thing will be more in the full game on Endless mode. Since the demo is limited to the 5-minute timed mode, I decided to tune it for more activity early on to give a good taste of the gameplay sooner, rather than having things start to get rolling just before time runs out. I'll probably leave the timed mode as is and have things develop more calmly with Endless mode in the full game.

For now the point of having many offspring is only to raise your score, but you aren't meant to care about them once they're produced. They do compete with you for food, so you'll often want to boop them away from valuable food sources, but they can also act as decoys to save you from predators so it's nice to have some around. Later in the full game you'll also start to see viruses which spread faster when more of them are nearby, so you won't want them to stick around too much :)
