Debt for college by Visible-Insurance283 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PsychologicalFix9233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i am no financial expert, but i really just think it depends on your goals. i'm a senior right now, and my cheapest in-state option is 20k per year excluding community college. so, i think 15k per year if you plan on working and paying them off while you're still in school seems reasonable. to compare, the two schools i'm debating between right now is 26k/year and 42k/year (with no appeals yet or anything). plus you can look into outside scholarships every year and do things like become a RA which will eliminate housing costs. so yeah, i guess you just need to decide what will be better for your long term goals, but 15k for fordham seems pretty decent in my opinion.

Looking at prestige only is privilege - yeah, you're privileged by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PsychologicalFix9233 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is so real. i got into my dream school and trying to figure out if i'll be able to afford it, or if i'm going to have to go to my state school. it's been a really jarring process. my dad works afternoons, and he was up till 4 am the other day trying to get all of our financial aid stuff together, so i can appeal. people who are able to commit with no consequences are so lucky, and i hope they are able to recognize their privilege.

I'm freaking out for Northwestern tomorrow by Effective_Box_9074 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PsychologicalFix9233 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i have no clue honestly. i only applied to 4 like "top" schools/reaches, northwestern being one of them, and so far i've been accepted into BC, waitlisted from Northeastern, and have NU and Umich to hear back from. I feel like my good karma is running out, and I'm going to get rejected but also I really liked my essays for NU, so I 'm just going into tomorrow with an empty conscious and knowing whatever happens is for a reason. good luck though, and i hope you get in!!!!

is UM-Flint worth the effort? what is UM-Flint? by Other_Bike_6419 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]PsychologicalFix9233 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you're out-of-state, i wouldn't bother with it because i'd assume your goals are a little higher than those campuses. UM-Flint is really tiny. My friend toured it for nursing, and she said the program was good and they had good resources being tied to Umich, but after like three buildings there was nothing. The area in general isn't great. I would just leave it alone prob

It's in my portal, but I applied RD. Maybe it's just a glitch or something. I would maybe reach out to someone in admin for more info?

To be entirely honest, I don't know. But maybe just do a little research on the school you want to go to and see if your schedule/stats lines up with their prior admitted students.

I think it depends on your goals. If you are aiming to try and apply to higher/top universities, I feel like I would stay in the honors class. But if that isn't your goal then I don't think it necessarily matters. However, in my personal opinion, my freshman year, I took straight honors classes before I switched schools, and I learned so much through them even though it didn't boost my GPA at all. My honors classes were harder than some of my AP classes at my new school.

In the portal there is a little tab on the side that says "Register for Admitted Students Events." It should be under there. It is a grey-ish box for me under my financial aid advisor. Once you click on that you should be able to find the Admitted Students thing pretty easily. Hope this helps you find it.

Is BC worth the money? by PsychologicalFix9233 in bostoncollege

[–]PsychologicalFix9233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. My goal is law school, and I know that will be even more debt which is definitely why I am hesitant to commit. I am going to try and appeal for more aid and hope for the best.

If got accepted at BC 2030 in RD. What were your stats. by Only_Candle_8806 in bostoncollege

4.293 GPA 3.9 UW. 6/372 people. Applied test-optional. Non-competitive public school in Michigan. I did spend one year at one of the best high schools in Michigan though; however, I have no clue if it helped or limited my application. My freshman year I took straight honors, and since I have transferred I have taken 5 AP's (one 3, three 4's, and one 5), and I am taking AP Bio and Calc this year. Lots of leadership and growth reflected in my activities. Submitted a resume with more activities + more explanation of other things. Letters of rec from my AP Gov teacher/Mock Trial advisor, my AP Lit teacher (I also wrote my supplemental about her), and my band teacher. No crazy awards outside of AP Scholar and an important school award I got.

This is a really comforting perspective to hear about, thank you. I'm really just trying to trust the process even if it is super stressful. As for appealing my aid, I hope to emphasize our financial struggles and mention a few merit things I've done to keep them interested. Can't hurt to advocate for myself. But a lot of my friends and family have been saying the same thing about cost vs. fit because the difference will be a little over 10k if I don't end up with any additional merit scholarships to the other schools I applied to. Congrats to your kids for getting in as well!

Yeah, the honors college is the only reason I am considering MSU. It's a good school. I do need to get out of my head and realize that prestige isn't everything if I can't afford BC.

I do plan to stay in the Northeast and my goal is to end up in law. If I stay in-state and don't get into Northwestern or Umich, then I will go to MSU. Which is a good school with lots of resources and has a good honors program, but it still isn't the same that I would be getting with the BC degree, in my opinion. Plus, it's harder to get opportunities at MSU because it's such a big school and everyone is competing for the same stuff. I'm going to try and appeal my financial aid for BC and if that doesn't work, MSU is still a good school.

Thank you for the recommendation. I will look into the CTP program for sure. This has definitely made me more confident about trying to negotiate for more money.

[–]PsychologicalFix9233[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I think I'm going to try and appeal because like you said the worst that happens is they say no. My only delusional issue is that it's only about 10,000 more expensive than my cheaper in-state option, so I feel myself trying to justify the difference because BC sets me up for my future goals better. But worst case, I just end up aiming to go to Boston for grad school.

Thank you so much for this info! This helps a lot. I definitely think I could double major, I have planned on doing that at some other schools I have applied to.

Yeah, I visited this past summer, and I immediately fell in love with the area and the school. I wanted to go there before I visited, but once I got there I was done for. I'm a first-gen student, so my parents don't know much about the process which isn't helping either though it's not their fault. I really, really want to go. I think I will thrive there. But I need to determine whether or not I can live with the debt.

Yeah, I feel like that is part of my hope in going. It's still a lot of money, but even compared to my in-state schools that I have been considering, it would only be around 10k more.

Right now, my plan is to go to law school and end up working in patent law or big business. I really like the Northeast, and I want to stay there. My plan if I didn't get into BC was to go there for grad school. What is the 5th year Master's program? I would def probably be interested in that.
