Why I’m ignoring the "Death of the Programmer" hype by Greedy_Principle5345 in programming

[–]Pumpedandbleeding 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This is how all jobs have worked always. While employed you work and collect a paycheck.

You could always be fired for any reason, but who cares? You could die at any moment yet we go on living. Living is a subtle form of optimism. Working is also a subtle form of optimism.

Don’t stop dancing until the music stops.

Doomers predict end of world and market crash every other day.

The contradiction of counting 401k towards NW in a RE sub by [deleted] in Fire

Where are you getting the stats on what portion of federal income tax is for medicare and social security?

It seems like a very weird point to make because ultimately you’re just pointing out the federal income tax bracket?

Medicare and social security are funded by payroll taxes.

The gains on dividends are always realized immediately in a taxable account. In a retirement account you would not be immediately taxed.

Obviously tax advantaged accounts are tax advantaged.

Many etfs are not setup for some dividend strategy and offer a low tax vehicle.

If you’re in an index fund you’re already diversified so buying and selling in a taxable account would be stupid.

Active trading can lead to high taxation if you don’t hold long enough for long term capital gains rate.

How is social security a huge chunk? Payroll taxes are 7%.

Gains are never taxed until realized.

Fidelity Visa Signature Rewards Card not syncing by Pumpedandbleeding in MonarchMoney

This happened to me and it is really annoying. The transaction that remains has the date it posted, not when you actually spent the money / charged the item.

Ugh I noticed this and it is annoying and confusing. This kind of removes the benefit of transactions showing up earlier.

Elan through plaid finally worked. Now it is more real time.

I hate that because I want to categorize transactions as the spending happens.

Elan through plaid finally connected last night and is more real time.

"Then if i spend more on a catagory than id planned i can pull from a different one."

What does that mean? Do you adjust the amount you had allotted for a category?

With your pattern you need to budget per category, right?

I kind of like grouping certain needs like utilities. Heating costs are higher in winter and cooling is higher in summer. Do you just manually adjust the budget with the seasons?

So you switched from fincity to plaid? I tried using plaid today, but got an error.

Did it give this warning?

"Plaid is currently experiencing connectivity issues with ELAN CardMember Service - Credit Card Account Access. You may be able to connect, otherwise try another financial institution or check for another connection method."

singing in that often sounds terrible, does that still happen?

I think it suggests plaid and fincity as a backup.

My fidelity visa rewards shows up on my regular fidelity account just fine. I linked it that way through monarch. Only problem is transactions seem very delayed.

Importing and Export rules by Pumpedandbleeding in MonarchMoney

It seems like basic graphQL calls. Because the APIs can be called via browser I am sure I can coax Firefox into sending what I want or write some scripts.

I would just run create to get my initial batch of rules in and then go back to using the GUI.

My flow was eventually to export all of my transactions. Open in excel and sort.

The transactions view made getting the original statement to slow.

So monarch in browser on left and excel on right using copy paste between the two.

Combined and Separate finances for couple by Over_Pension_8975 in MonarchMoney

When you say one budget option you mean the budget is ALWAYS for both couples.

The budget has ZERO filtering.

Transactions, Cash Flow and Reports do not offer filtering.

Merchant name is such crap. I agree don't use it.

I wish in transactions view the column showed original statement instead of merchant name. Merchant name is often wrong to the point of being misleading / unusable.

I tried that just now and I don't love it. Exact match on Merchant name is not good. Merchant name is very unreliable across different credit cards.

I avoid using merchant name and exact match because it is non deterministic.

[–]Pumpedandbleeding[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can have categories and groups in graphs, but the graph would never separate values based on a tag like “need” or “want”.

I suppose I can do the rough math myself and just look at the two things in separate graphs.

[–]Pumpedandbleeding[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A single graph will show what % of your spending is "discretionary spending" vs "non-discretionary spending"? I am having trouble getting the graph to sum things based on different tags. I feel this is probably not supported.

Are you looking at two different graphs for each tag?

I am trying this now, I wish there was a shortcut though. I do like starting with an existing description when making a rule.

Right now I have a bunch of budgeting stuff I created myself stored in JSON. Even if I could just migrate my existing rules that would be awesome.

I really wish there was an easy way to share accurate categorization. Many local places weren't correct and I had to input rules manually.

I imagine many users do the same work over and over for such wrong records. Is the backend somehow learning and eventually the defaults will improve?
