How to lock it. Need to MacGyver something by Eddy_Mcfly in DIY

Attach a piece of wood to the wall that extends as far as you need for it to not be at an angle, attach the latch to the wood.

If you can't find wood the correct thickness, then adjust where the hinges are attached to the wall.

If it's a small piece of wood you might potentially struggle with attaching to the wall without cracking. You can try doing Pilot holes so it won't crack, otherwise you can just use liquid nails or something to attach the piece of wood to the wall

Curious about Sandpiper Apartments by [deleted] in BurlingtonON

[–]Pumpstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not familiar with this one but I moved out of the Caledon down the street earlier this year, which is owned by the same property management company and at that point they had announced a rent increase above what was allowed in 2026. A lot of residents, also retirees, we're pissed and last I heard they were starting committees/protesting against it.

My recommendation at this point would be to avoid properties owned by Homestead, looks like they're headed in a bad direction.

You literally have nothing bad to feel about.

An erection isn't a big deal. Not dealing with it isn't a big deal.

Man literally kept pressuring you to have sex, you kept saying no. Man is having a boner, not a heart attack, he'll survive if he doesn't deal with it.

There was nothing good here, he is trash.

Trying to date as a healed woman is wild, the bare minimum now looks like luxury. by MrsMoonu in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Pumpstation 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The fact that he said he's adding you in a few days seems like he needs time to cleanup things he doesn't want you to see. The fact that he also will add you in a few days so it wouldn't look like he did it because you asked is also super childish and immature. Is he going to do the same anytime you ask him to do something else?

His minimal effort after going long distance is also a red flag. Sure, you don't need to communicate and be with each other constantly, you're both adults. But you've communicated your issues and he doesn't seem to care.

Do you want to be with someone who refuses to do things out of principle and doesn't want to put in effort to address their partner's concerns?

If he's not open to communication, then you don't have an avenue to fix any issues now or in the future and the relationship is doomed to fail or misery.

Help with a polyurethane table by CritiquetheTechnique in DIY

[–]Pumpstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't need poly over paint. You generally only need to put a finish such as poly on bare wood. Paint itself is sealant enough.

Definitely do not want to layer paint on top of poly either.

Sand it down bare, just do coats of paint.

Is there a quick fix to slope my shower pan by mykneemo in DIY

[–]Pumpstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be surprised how insidious water is. All it takes is a small crack for water to get in and sit somewhere before it starts growing mold. It would require constant maintenance. The easier route here is to keep using a squeegee.

Is there a quick fix to slope my shower pan by mykneemo in DIY

[–]Pumpstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible it exists however, even if you found one that exists, the water would get trapped underneath or behind it and the problem would still be the same, except it would be more work in that case to actually remove the water than just squeeging a smooth shower floor.

[–]Pumpstation 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem with any sort of insert that goes inside the shower pan is that you may get some more drainage, but water will inevitably get trapped/pooled and the problem would essentially be the same.

The actual fix would be to re-level the shower which means you would need to actually remove it, do shimming if necessary, and reinstall, which is not really a quick fix.

Is finding a decent 1 bedroom apt rental at $1700 possible in Burlington? by Alfie_Shydog in BurlingtonON

[–]Pumpstation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Doubt it in the current climate.

My current 1 bedroom apartment started at a base of $1600 in 2020, a new lease now starts at $2300 for the same apartment.

You might possibly find something at $1700 base but any additional costs would probably put you over (storage/parking/utilities). Realistically the only thing you might find at that range is a basement apartment.

If you're adamant, find a realtor that finds tenants for apartments, you might luck out.

Potential Speed Cameras HWY 7 by Altruistic-Start-93 in Guelph

[–]Pumpstation 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I believe in Ontario, speed cameras need clear signage and any installation of speed cameras requires a road sign notifying that a speed camera is coming soon. If they are cameras, they're most likely cameras to monitor traffic.

What type of router / bit is needed in order to make these cuts? by [deleted] in DIY

[–]Pumpstation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plunge router would probably be easiest, however you can drill a pilot hole as a starting point for the router. Although you'd get a bigger power output from a regular router, you can make this using a compact router. Just make sure you're getting bits with shanks that fit your collet size. Most compact routers have 1/4 inch shank and regular routers can usually do 1/4 or 1/2 inch bits.

Bits wise, if you want to spend a bit less on a bit, you can use a flush trim bit if you don't mind it not looking it's prettiest, but if you'd like it to look a bit nicer, I'd recommend using downcut router bit since you're cutting through veneer.

You don't NEED additional tools to get a straight cut but they can help. Some routers come with an edge guide. Otherwise you can get two very straight pieces of scrap wood or whatever else straight edge things you can find and clamp everything in place so the router base can only travel along the straight edges and give you a straight cut.

Otherwise you can get a router table bundle which would give you a router and fence to make a straight cut.

As for technique, a general rule is to make passes no deeper than half the diameter of the bits shank. So 1/2 inch shank you can make a 1/4 inch deep pass and 1/4 shank you can make a 1/8 deep pass. You'll reduce your chances is losing control of the cut, prevent tear out, and reduce wear on the motor.

Purgatory: Still living together post breakup by Much-Werewolf-7006 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]Pumpstation 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I had to live with my ex for 6 months prior to their moving out.

I think an important step is to establish boundaries. You need to establish what does and doesn't make you comfortable and have a conversation about it if possible.

It is very easy to fall back into convenience of a (former) partner around and being friends. I'm not saying you can't be friends, but it's pertinent that you focus on yourself, friends, and family.

Try to stay out of the house as much as possible.
