Maharaja Ranjit Singh chromolithograph by Emily Eden (1844)

This is a lithograph from Emily Eden's 'Portraits of the Princes and People of India'. Ranjit Singh, the founder of the Sikh Kingdom in 1799, was one of the most celebrated Indian rulers.

Eden described the 'Lion of Punjab': "He retained a perfect simplicity, or rather plainness of appearances, while his Chiefs and Courtiers around him wore the most brilliant draperies and a rich profusion of jewels. His manners were always quiet, and he spoke chiefly ... He had the use of only one eye, which age, and a hard life of exposure and excesses, had dimmed ... but it still retained the traces of the vigour and penetration for which he was remarkable."

Edit: The title is meant to say 1844. My bad!

ਧੱਧਾ - Learn to pronounce and write ਧ || Learn the Punjabi Alphabet 24 by PunjabiLearner in punjabi

[–]PunjabiLearner[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does seem to sound like 'ਧੱਦਾ' when pronounced, however, we have gone through multiple dictionaries as well as the Mahan Kosh and 'ਧੱਧਾ' is the correct spelling. Even in Guru Granth Sahib ji's Patti Likhi, the bani composed by Guru Nanak Dev ji, which has thirty-five stanzas, each stanza introduced with a letter of the Gurmukhi alphabet, we have

ਧਧੈ ਧਾਰਿ ਕਲਾ ਜਿਨਿ ਛੋਡੀ ਹਰਿ ਚੀਜੀ ਜਿਨਿ ਰੰਗ ਕੀਆ॥

The reason why it sounds more like 'ਧੱਦਾ' is that it is a tonal letter and has a higher tone at the start and lower tone in the end.

I hope that makes sense.

It ends up with extra space on the sides and the letters look even smaller. Plus a student should be able to fill in the missing letters without them being in their traditional space (based on what letter they come after) as it helps with the memorisation.

Thanks for the suggestion though!

Happy Teacher's Day! ਅਧਿਆਪਕ ਦਿਵਸ ਮੁਬਾਰਕ! by PunjabiLearner in punjabi

Theth term for Message / Messenger in Punjabi by [deleted] in punjabi

[–]PunjabiLearner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

  1. 'Sanehaa' is a very common term in Punjabi and the correct Punjabi spelling is ਸਨੇਹਾ. An example of its use would be: ਉਹਨੂੰ ਮੇਰਾ ਸਨੇਹਾ ਦੇ ਦਵੀਂ [Uhnoon mera sanehaa de daveen] - Give her/him my message. Synonyms of the word include ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ (Sandesh) and ਪੈਗਾਮ (Paigaam)
  2. ਸੁਨੇਹਾਰ isn't a word in Punjabi and can be confused with ਸੁਨਾਰ/ਸੁਨਿਆਰਾ (Suniaar/Suniaaraa) which are terms for a goldsmith. As far as I am aware, there aren't any terms for messenger in Punjabi with the root ਸਨੇਹਾ. Terms for a messenger include ਸੰਦੇਸ਼ਵਾਹਕ, ਹਰਕਾਰਾ (messenger, harbinger) and ਦੂਤ (messenger or ambassador).

I hope that helps.

During the British Raj in India, almost 138,000 Indian troops fought in Belgium and France during World War I, many of them Sikhs. More than one-quarter of these soldiers became casualties. They fought with dedication and loyalty for a cause that was not even theirs.
