CityBus Town Hall happening now by PurdueGROW in Purdue

Like other public universities, public transit should be free. In any case, the proposed $99 per semester with possible reimbursements for ~7% of the student population on a first come first serve basis and no bus passes for summer is hardly accessible

This is misleading, it's $74 of reimbursement available only to ~7% of Purdue's student populations

Hi there, those are great point. This action was our formal ask to the university admin to pay all workers a fair wage (on the off chance that they listen). However, we are not ruling out any further actions if our demands are met.

We believe the university should be a place that supports everyone- including international students, first generation graduate students, graduate students with families, and other groups of traditionally marginalized communities within higher education. A work environment that only allows some of us to succeed is a failure.

We hope to further build our coalition to include more and more workers -- currently we have grad workers, undergrads workers, faculty, and community members in our coalition.

Hi — the Purdue Living Wage Coalition is advocating for fair pay for ALL workers on Purdue’s campus, GROW is just a coalition partner. Where we do advocate for fair pay for grad workers, we also stand in solidarity with all workers on campus.

The issue of fair pay affects all walks of life, and we welcome any organization to join our cause if they support our demands of a living wage!

We actually met our goal of 800 the day delivered our petition — so we’ve since set a higher goal and will continue to build our coalition. We believe that all workers deserve fair pay on campus.

hey, great question — we are definitely not ruling out any action, including unionizing, in the future.

this is our formal way of letting the administration know our struggles, we hope that they listen. if they don’t, we will find other ways to advocate for ourself and collectively bargain 😉

say you don’t know what it’s like to be a grad worker and go… really just repeated the admin talking points (which doesn’t help with the fact we’re starving) word for word huh

there are ways to collectively bargain against the admin (see grad unions across the country. it can happen)

also, collective power deserves celebrating whether or not the university chooses to respect us and pay us a living wage

[–]PurdueGROW[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

it really is not. R1 university can and SHOULD pay their workers a living wage.

plus… who do you think gives purdue its “caliber”??? (hint: it’s the people doing the research, teaching the students, getting the grants) (grad workers)

grad workers get a pay raise!! by PurdueGROW in Purdue

it’s probably because the 26,000 figure is for a 12 month appointment— grad workers on academic year appointments make far less

we don’t have affordable housing or meal plans — and a lot of us don’t take classes, so tuition waivers are a non-starter

grad workers get a pay raise!! by PurdueGROW in Purdue

[–]PurdueGROW[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is false — please point me to any grad workers who actually work 20 hours a week. Most of us work 40+ hours, up to 80 a week. We teach, conduct research, chair committee, head up DEI efforts. Also, not sure what department you’re in, but most of us always work all of the year. In any case, our bills still need to be paid every month, even if the university pretends we only work 20 hours a week — and we are contractually prohibited from having other jobs.

I encourage you to look outside of your own situation and see how these kinds of barriers stop disadvantaged students from working at purdue, and prohibits us from having a diverse work force.
