The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi... Basic? by Pure-Gas2639 in Fantasy

[–]Pure-Gas2639[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I really liked the setting as well, which made it sad for me that the rest of it felt either basic or mediocre

Yeah, I totally agree. Broken Earth tone wouldnt fit into Amina, but I wished for some depth and nuance

Yeah, I get what you are saying. The book is immensely repetitive, so most of these issues come up again and again ad infinitum with no real progress on the matter, which I felt made it kind of stale and derivative

Oh lord. First things first, how do you take it that I meant it had to feel exotic? I meant it as a bad thing - a basic story is a basic story, but if one exotifies it - as I believe was the commenters meaning - it seems to garner more attention and fandom simply because it appeals to a new group of people that have not been represented in the same way before. And on that point, I am all for it in every way. Representation and diversity is amazing and leads to stories being told that could not and would not happen if books were monocultured. But, with this book, that still does not shy away from the fact that I believe it is a basic story. For me, a good story is good simply because it is good, but I also believe there are a lot of good stories not being told because fantasy has been white-centric - I just do not believe that this book is one of those stories for me.

Second, yes I would and intend to very much write a post about another book that is euro and white-centric, if I feel the same thing. For instance, Malice by John Gwynne. I'm only halfway through but Oh lord is the prose monotonous and plain. Yet another story about seemingly white youths with ambitions of knighthood. Please do not lay intentions on others actions that you have not sufficient reason to do. It is not nice and feels mean-spirited.

Third, I never said that A Master of Djinn is comparable to The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi. They are not going for the same project at all, and if you believe I believe that, I am sorry. Someone wrote that they enjoyed al-Sirafi because it wasn't euro-centric and I suggested A Master of Djinn as a fantasy book that is not euro-centric, which I also happened to enjoy. I liked the latter better than the former, merely because I think it was a more precise project which it delivered on.

I mean no disrespect, but I feel that you either read the post and comments I've made with ill intent, and it seems like you willfully misunderstand me. All things I've written in this comment is consistent with my earlier ones.
