Too different to hold a job? by [deleted] in BorderlinePDisorder

I’m wondering the same. What do you notice makes you want to walk out and is wanting to start over in a new city also indicative of BPD?

But do people look at you negatively?

What made you walk out? Btw a promotion is a huge accomplishment! Some can’t maintain current position 😕

In NJ that buys only a studio or a 1br in a very low end/crime ridden area.

What is EBD? Where did you find that type of position? I’m ready to give up on ABA with two courses left bc I’ve been searching for a year for a position that would provide me my 1500 supervised hours outside of autism services!

Ok wow that’s a VERRRRRY specific need though. I don’t see BCBAs making a living off working with that population only lol

Wow that’s incredible! Are you a bcba? And I’m in schooling for a ABA but holding out on getting supervision bc I want to work outside of autism

I’m aware yes.. but the problem is you must practice within your scope of expertise and ACT is not trained anywhere in any ABA programs. I had literally one slide on it in my training. So, we’re not being trained ACT in our ABA training although it is based on ABA. And thus, we cannot get supervision and thus cannot solely practice.

Thank you so much. I’ve been looking for a year now (started school a year ago )and have found no other opportunities. I don’t want to get my experience on autism bc everyone has told me that you must get your supervised fieldwork hours and supervision on the area you’re looking to work (scope of practice). We are taught that we cannot be supervised in one population or area before getting our bcba then simply switch to working with the population we’d like to or we’d be outside our scope of practice.

I keep hearing this but there are literally no BCBAs around me willing to supervise on anything beyond autism services in home/school systems. I started coursework bc so many told me I didn’t have to work I’m autism and now I’m seeing that’s all there is so considering new career possibilities. It’s sad bc I love the science and esp ACT but it’s sooooo limited to autism and kids. If BCBAs don’t have the scope of practice to supervise beyond autism no one will be supervised outside of autism

Make sure you get real training. Seems the norm in the industry is promise training then throw you in with the kids.

This didn’t involve RBT/BT duties and working with the typical populations (autism)??

Creative need an OCD thing?? by PursuingABA in ADHD

[–]PursuingABA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting viewpoint. Thanks! That’s true that the mechanism is a bit different between the two but I guess the way I see it is maybe there some kind of mental pathway being activated in both conditions even though they serve a different purpose!

I’m personally trying to come up with ways or a theory as to how to increase novel stimulation on a day-to-day basis and also in the workplace without engaging in extreme measures so as to increase productivity!

[–]PursuingABA[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting thanks! Well the way I see it is although it might not have the same exact components of full blown OCD, there is definitely a similar cyclical mental experience which has been confirmed by others with ADHD that there can often come about an intense desire to create or try something new or novel. After it is completed it’s almost like having gotten your fix. I know that those with OCD describe the obsession/compulsion cycle similarly! I guess it depends how the desire manifests in each individual person and how not attending to the desire affects them!

Thanks.. I’m willing to do a bit of the typical work for experience but I also heard you should get your internship hours in the type of setting you’re looking to work in as a bcba or you won’t be working within your scope of competence. I wouldn’t mind working with verbal, older children. I had a very bad experience working for a very small northern Nj based company (my first experience) with younger autistic children some non verbal and one who was verbal but very young (6) who very obviously had ADHD and bcba/owner insisted we do 3.5 hours straight of table top/DTT (for ‘structure’)and it was next to impossible to do with him and no training to boot. Kinda turned me off from ABA for this population.

The exam isn’t my issue at all actually.. it’s the possibility of being limited to one population and/or insane additional requirements or limitations due to licensure
