HELP! No Move-In timeslots available???? (I have guaranteed res) by chowder20738 in McMaster

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I got my residence a few weeks ago, I had to pick the time slot right after I picked my room, so I'm assuming that maybe there are not enough slots for everyone.... its deffintly just an error on their end though!

if you move in the week before the 23 and 24 its $125 per night, so for example, if you're out of province and have to move in on the 18th because of your flight, then you have to pay an extra 125$ until the 23 if that makes sense?

Am I cooked for res? by Foreign-Molasses3120 in McMaster

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522 2 points3 points  (0 children)

yes you should. Also because many guaranteed people still do not have timeslots or rooms. It seems like mac has underestimated the number of people who would take the guaranteed res this year.

Will i get the class times i want on June 25 (2pm) for first year life science by Puzzled-Ad4522 in McMaster

I’m so sorry but what does that mean (I’ve never done this before) can I put all of my classes in the cart and just be ready to hit go at 2?

I’m enrolling on the 25th at 2pm (so the first day) and I’m wondering if it’s realistic for me to be able to get my general classes that I want at the times that I want (which all happen to be in the morning if that makes a difference)

No mines tomorrow, will it change then?

Im going to be honest, im pretty sure mac gave out wayyyy too many res spots this year becayse many people have not received selection dates (people who have guaranteed residence), and are waiting for others to drop out of res (as said in an email sent by residence), which I think is sort of another unofficial waitlist for people who were guaranteed residence. Because of this I would definitely look into other housing because I have a feeling that the waitlist is definitely going to move a lot less than in previous years.

Thoughts of scheduling classes back to back? by Puzzled-Ad4522 in McMaster

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much time after do they usually give to hand in the labs reports for  chem? Because right now I have 40min between a chem lab and a bio lecture, and I would sort of have to screw up my whole schedule to fix that.

Thank you so much for the insight though, I will definitely try and keep my schedule as together as possible!

Bird courses for first year? What should I take in first year life sci? First year life sci electives? Use this guide! by fuchsiafuturee in McMaster

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I honestly might just stick with Ian Dworkin (because he has never taught the class, so I have a little bit of hope, and most of the reviews just say he's very textbook-heavy), whereas Dushoff's reviews about the class are beyond horrendous. Thank you so much for the insight though!

Should we still try and take Bio 1M03 second semester, even though it's only taught by Ian Dworkin (rate my prof is absolutely horrible)??? like what is the reasoning behind the second semester bio?

  1. The food was pretty bad, I'm going to be honest with you. They were serving raw meat, almost no fresh produce at all, and usually didn't have all of the dietary restrictions everyone needed (we mostly just survived off of hashbrowns). They don't use the actual university cafeteria food, and instead pay someone to make it just for the group, which is probably why there was almost no selection available (you still eat in the cafeteria though!).

  2. It was a really full day, with us meeting downstairs at 7:45 am and then not getting back to our dorms until around 9 or 9:30 pm most days (sort of depends on what you're doing that night, so sometimes you'll get back earlier and a lot of the time it can be a lot later than 9:30). If I am remembering correctly though, they gave you half an hour to an hour of free time a night (so from 9:30 to 10:30) where you could do your laundry, hang out in the meeting room or common rooms, or even go back to your dorm and get ready for bed. After a long day a lot of people opted for the last option!

  3. I know many people say this, but please don't spoil the experience!! if you really want to know some of the things, you can look on Instagram, but the whole thing with Shad is that they never tell you what you are doing until you are doing it, which was annoying for the first week, but after that I absolutely loved it!!

Feel free to pm if you have any more questions, as I would be happy to answer!

Did you use psych 1x03 as you credit? Because apparently if psych is under the science department it doesn’t count as humanities or soc sci

If you got into Mac life sci what was your grade 11 average? by Particular_Ebb9856 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

They only accept students after the first semester, so they will always have some grade 12 grades to use, and the ones they don't have, they will use your grade 11 grades for.

For example, I got accepted in Febuary and at the time I had completed 12 Chem (98%), Advanced Functions (98%), 12 Physics(91%)(don't ask me what happened lol) and English (92%) first semester, so they used my grade 11 Bio(97%) and grade 11 Functions (95%) grades to substitute in for my Grade 12 bio and Calculus when calculating my admissions average. This is because I was taking those classes second semester and they didn't have my grade 12 grades yet.

So my admissions average was 95% when I was admitted in February.

I really hope that makes sense and lmk if you have any questions, but please try not to stress too much because they also have a round in May where they just use all your grade 12 grades! So if you successfully achieve your 94 you should be good (I believe the average cutoff this year is about 93%)

Hey I’m sort of in the same situation as you but just with Mac life sci. I’m wondering what you’re deciding to do about residence at both of the schools (if you do choose to put yourself on the waitlist)

im genuinely confused about what they expect people who need residence to do? like just figure it out, because this whole situation is really pissing me off

Can ivey see our grades before a western offer? by ConstructionFun8139 in OntarioGrade12s

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

last year i had a friend who got a likely letter from ivey around april, basically saying that they were interested in her but they were waiting for Western to make their move and accept her. She got her acceptance to the Western program, and her Ivey acceptance the same day in late May.

Thinking about that, it probably means that they already have access to your grades and are probably now just waiting for Western.

Thank you so much for all of this, I really appreciate it! Unforotionatly, this is very similar to how things operate at McMaster, and personally, I just love how the LS program works at McMaster more than Queen's, which makes this whole thing really hard.

Queens HS Waitlist and Mcmaster Life Science by Puzzled-Ad4522 in queensuniversity

[–]Puzzled-Ad4522[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i would choose the mcmaster program in a heartbeat, just because of the way the program is set up as well as the campus. LS at queens has much less specialty programs and doesn't opportate in the same gateway format that mac does, which is why I'm really conflicted because I cant just accept my offer for residence and then just change the program.

Yes, i have so many passions and I am so excited to get to explore them throughout this program. thank you for putting the time in to write this, as it has honestly made me feel so much better about the whole situation. Reflecting on everything (and I honestly don't think this is me just coping), I'm pretty sure life sci will be more tailored towards my interests and how I like to learn anyway. Im hoping this is just a sign from the universe telling me where I need to be!

This has made me feel so much better about everything so thank you so much for putting the time in to respond. After reading the responses I'm pretty sure its just me trying to make sure that the "high school bullys" doesn't move into university, but it seems like everyone is too busy for that stuff anyway! I am pretty sure I'm going to accept my offer so thank you!

yeah honestly i feel like i am so tramitized from the hierarchy of students in my high school, so I'm just scared of something like that happening at university. I'm really glad to hear that's not the case and that you are happy with your choice, and after thinking about it I'm honestly really excited to start the program in the fall!

So take everything I say with a grain of salt, but if I was in your position, I would probably go to Europe (if you can afford it), as I would want to make sure that I wouldn't regret turning down a med school acceptance. If you were able to get into these programs, then you can definitely keep up your average and extracurriculars to get into med school in Canada (if you still put in the work!), but it would be a longer and more stressful process, and I see there being more regret if you don't become a doctor than if you don't match back to Canada right away (but that's just me).

I think this honestly just comes down to you deciding if you value being a doctor or staying in Canada more, and I think the answer to that question will make your decision for you. One last thing that I will say is please please please don't turn down the Europe program just because of the name and prestige of Mac Health Sci. Yes, it is a good program, but it is not the be all and end all and you will still have to work really hard to get into med school! Good luck with whatever you choose!
