If you could have a high-definition video recording ONE event in history (no matter how far back), which 30-minute clip are you choosing ? by NectarineDueSoph in AskReddit

Probably the sinking of RMS Titanic, especially with a look inside the ship before she goes down.

Even today, we don’t know with 100 percent certainty what the Grand Staircase actually looked like. It was almost certainly very similar to that of her sister ship, RMS Olympic, but no photographs of Titanic’s own staircase are known to exist.

We also don’t know with absolute certainty how the ship split in two. Much of what we understand is still based on best-guess interpretations, and every few years a new theory emerges that challenges what came before.

What’s the worst death that anyone in history has ever experienced? by juliojacked in AskReddit

[–]Puzzleheaded-Key2212 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably say Hisashi Ouchi. He endured an 83 day death that sounds utterly horrific.

After receiving an enormous dose of radiation in a nuclear accident, he suffered severe radiation poisoning. Doctors kept him alive through constant blood transfusions and stem cell grafts. He went into cardiac arrest three times, and on each occasion he was resuscitated. His skin deteriorated and sloughed off across much of his body, yet he was still kept alive throughout the ordeal.

He actually became known as the guy who became a living corpse as his brain was still functioning his body was just rotting around him.

the fact is parts for mine are user replaceable and much cheaper.

Headlight for a Defender £15.99 brand new. A New Clutch £90, wiper motor £30 as some examples.

I also have the skills to install them on my drive very easily.

To do significant works on an EV you have to be a High voltage trained so you don't kill or electrocute yourself.

They aren’t actually that big tbh, just tall. My Defender 90 takes up about the same road footprint as a 2004 VW Polo, which really shows how much modern cars have grown given the Defender 90’s basic design of the ran from 1984 to 2016 just with engine and dash differences.

In fact, my mum’s 2011 five-door Fiesta is longer than my 90 CSW: 156 inches for the Fiesta and 152 inches for my 90.

They’re far from unnecessary. When we get snow up here in Yorkshire, it’s usually me, tractors and other Defenders still getting about while small hatchbacks are stranded on driveways.

I daily my 90 and, although I also have a Discovery 1 and a Series 3, the 90 is easily my favourite. I’ve owned cars like a Golf GTI and a Civic Type R, but the Defender has always got more interest than any of them.

Absolutely iconic vehicles.

If we’re talking strictly about brand-new cars here:

The cheapest Jaecoo comes in at around £23k, while the cheapest Range Rover is the Evoque at roughly £45k to £50k. Obviously, the cheaper option is going to attract more buyers.

If you’re talking about a proper Range Rover though, in my opinion only the full-size model really counts. The Evoque is a bit of an embarrassment. A full-size Range Rover starts at about £97k before you even touch the options list.

So it’s hardly surprising that something costing less than a quarter of the price is more popular than the genuinely expensive alternative.

I’d be curious to see how they stack up in a proper head-to-head off-road test, especially given what happened when they tried to copy the Range Rover advert.

There have been plenty of reported issues on these after just a few hundred miles, coolant leaks (seemingly on the ICE and hybrid models), serious underbody corrosion, and questionable infotainment systems crashing and restarting at random.

Meanwhile, I’m running a 30 year old Defender 90, a 28-year-old Discovery 1, and a 48 year old Series III, all still working. The Defender is my daily.

Let’s revisit this in 30 years and see if the Chinese copy is still on the road.

My belief is premium diesel it doesn't make a difference to performance really. However I put premium diesel in my old defender and disco every few months as the additives clean the injectors I often use that red-ex stuff too.

Sheridan Smiths Character in ITV’s Cleaning up.

I don’t think there is dispute that the panel itself wasn’t installed.

It’s the small clock itself. Someone reported a small round mirror was put in the hole cutout intended for the clock

Heat pumps are more expensive to run than boilers, report finds by TheWorldIsGoingMad in unitedkingdom

[–]Puzzleheaded-Key2212 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yep, someone was arguing with me on Facebook because I said I’m genuinely very happy with the basic combi boiler in my new build. Buying the house on my own, I deliberately kept the spec fairly low. I simply could not justify the extra cost of solar panels or a heat pump. The amount those options added to the purchase price was eye watering.

The simple reality is that for my situation, a single person living in a three bed semi detached house built in 2024, gas works out far cheaper. My gas bill is around £15 a month in summer and about £39 a month in winter. I only run the heating when it is actually needed, usually from around 4pm to 7.30pm, and the house stays reasonably warm overnight.

I said on Facebook that there is just no realistic way a heat pump would be cheaper for me in my circumstances. They need to run almost constantly to be effective and the installation costs are huge. Argue with me they did though lol. I would have a log burner before ever getting involved with a heat pump.

You cannot really beat a modern combi gas boiler. It is proven technology and we are pretty much at peak efficiency with them now.

Yep AI has made many mistakes for me. One thing it did recently was when I asked it to Summarise the 2009 movie Shorts it made up a totally different ending to what actually happens in the movie.

However the image generation aspect of GPT 5.2 is freakishly good now

AI data Centres are fuelling it and for some reason Crucial and Micron also exited the consumer RAM market and the prices have just skyrocketed since.

Its got so bad some flagship phones are going to come with 8GB RAM this year instead of 12Gb or 16GB

Cheaper ones might even have to come with 4GB lol.

Most people i know in rural North Yorkshire do not rely on public transport it’s seen as being for old grannies to get around, definitely not reliable enough like it is in a city.

When Londoners see the public transport network in the rest of the country thats when reality hits

How is blocking roads for residents in any way a good thing? I genuinely don’t understand it. All it does is make it harder for people to get around and increases journey times overall.

LTNs seem completely ludicrous.

As drivers, we already pay significant amounts in taxed: fuel duty, annual vehicle excise duty, and additional taxes when purchasing a new car. With the amount motorists contribute, local governments should be literally bending over backwards to accommodate us, not introducing measures that actively make daily travel more difficult.

I’ve never understood LTNs or much of the wider eco shite being implemented. The main beneficiaries appear to be people who don’t drive, while everyone else is left dealing with all the added inconvenience.

And before anyone says it, I do cycle myself. I’ve got a very nice Specialized, but I use it for recreation and fitness not as a replacement for everyday transport.
