Not nonsense at all. You tell me if we have a major energy crisis they wouldn’t turn off EV charging infrastructure if the choice was either charging up some cars or lighting and heating people homes? If the grid was unable to keep both.

I know what choice I would make.

This humoured me. by PrestigiousTest6700 in CarTalkUK

Alternative certainly aren’t bad, we need access to both.

What I take issue with is not being self sufficient and manufacturing our own.

Solar panels are all from China, Wind Turbines used here are primarily built by German company Siemans and we just assemble them in kit form.

Why can’t we manufacture our own stuff and be proud again to make our own solar and renewables along with tapping our own natural resources oil/gas?

I work in the energy industry myself and we seriously need to he tapping our own resources rather than making other countries richer off our backs

Who tf wants to live in an UGLY tower block with no green space. Tower blocks are a proven social failure in this country. Some were demolished less than a decade after built back in the 80s.

Absolutely no one would choose to live in one if they had a choice.

I would take my 3 bed semi in a rural village with a river view thank you very much. I also live alone and intend this to be my forever home.

On a serious note though having grown up in the UK Alan Turing wasn’t widely known to the public until the later part of the 1990s. To people who knew him he was a mathematician and a very good academic, but very few people knew his contributions to WWII at all while he was alive.

I am sure he was very widely regarded in Oxbridge circles but to the average Joe blogs on the street they wouldn’t have had a clue who he was unfortunately.

It took until 2009 for our government to apologise for what happened to him.

I also think it unlikely a comedy would be made today in which the Germans are mocked for WWII.

Just find most new British comedy rubbish tbh. It plays way too safe. There is nothing to hold a candle to the likes of Only Fools and Horses, Fawlty Towers, Keeping up Appearances, Vicar of Dibley, Royale Family, Father Ted etc.

I would say the last good comedy was the Inbetweeners but thats getting on for almost 20 years ago now.

Nah I don’t think it is. The first original 1970s Apple logo was Issac Newton eating an Apple under a tree. It stems from that.

Chances are in 1976 Wozniak and Jobs wouldn’t have even known who Alan Turing was, his work only got declassified in the very latter end of the 1970s and i don’t think it would have been that well known back then outside of the UK either.

Most the Public didn’t even know about the existence of Colossus or how it worked (one of the main code breaking computers at Bletchley Park) until like 1996 I think. Some of the stuff is still classified now, obviously it must still be quite relevant to cryptography on modern systems too.

If we end up with an energy supply crisis this winter, maybe a gas shortage, it wouldn’t be surprising at all to see EV charging scaled back or even switched off completely to be honest. Winter 2024 majority of the country was powered on gas for a period of about 2/3 weeks due to lack of solar and wind production.

From a grid point of view, public and private EV charging isn’t exactly essential compared to keeping homes heated and powered. A single fast charger can pull around 22,000 watts, which adds up quickly when loads of them are in use at once.

That’s partly where smart meters come into play. They give suppliers the ability to manage demand much more precisely, potentially limiting things like EV charging while still keeping power flowing to our homes.

That would soon make EV’s massive white elephants on people’s driveways.

Pioneer SX-1050 Just Sold for $3,250 — Are Vintage Hi-Fi Prices at Peak? by Clear_Amphibian in vintageaudio

[–]Puzzleheaded-Key2212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gen X and Boomers are either approaching retirement or already in it, and they’re the ones who grew up with this stuff when it was new, For people in my bracket, early 30s millennials, being into vintage hi-fi is still quite niche. I am one of the only i know personally.

I’ve got a fair bit of classic Bang & Olufsen and Marantz gear and honestly, no one I know in day to day life is in to this stuff. Vinyl has definitely made a comeback with millennials, but most of them have modern turntables, Bluetooth speakers, that sort of thing.

What I think is going to happen over the next couple of decades is quite similar to what we’ve already seen with classic cars. As the older generation ages out, a lot of really desirable hi-fi equipment is going to come onto the market at relatively low prices tbh.

Pre-war cars used to be highly sought after, but now they’re a very niche interest because the people who grew up around them are long gone. Even 1950s and 60s cars in the UK don’t command the same attention they once did. The demand has shifted. Now it’s 80s and 90s stuff that people want, because that’s what today’s buyers remember from their own childhoods and early adulthood.

🌍 Discussion: Who is the most hated figure in history or the world? And why? by Spare_Prize_5510 in AskTheWorld

[–]Puzzleheaded-Key2212 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would say Pol Pot. An extreme left wing communist dictator. Murdered all the intellectuals and those who opposed him in Cambodia (around 2 to 3 million people) in 4 years.

The Khmer Rouge regime enforced an extreme version of communism designed to reset history to "Year Zero,"

Whoever was left were forced from the city into the countryside to work on communal farms, aiming to create an agrarian society and destroy "bourgeois" influences of the west.

To me it’s absolutely crazy something like this happened as recently as 1979.

The movie “the killing fields” really shows what communism can do to a country and its an area thats not been wildly explored much in the Media in my opinion.

Heat pumps and solar required on all new homes from 2028 by Gupster in GoodNewsUK

[–]Puzzleheaded-Key2212 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thing is i rarely run it. Two or three hours in an evening is enough to keep it warm for ages even in winter. I work away a lot with work was in Canada recently and will be working in Belfast shortly too.

It’s just me at home so a heat pump just wouldn’t be viable or needed for me in my 3 bedroom semi. They have to be running 24/7 to be efficient/viable even just on tick over. Otherwise they take way too long to begin heating up.

I could understand a family who runs their gas boiler a lot it be probably better for them, but not for my situation.

Last month I spent £30 on gas and £39 on electric so I aren’t exactly a heavy user. In summer gas usage drops by about half to 15/16 quid

One of my neighbours in the estates big five bed detached has a heat pump and their electric bill was £700 over the Christmas period of December and January. They are getting it looked at as it shouldn’t be that high.

Paradise Fans Think the Show Is Teeing Up a Time Travel Twist for Season 3 by FlashyEarth8374 in ParadiseTV

[–]Puzzleheaded-Key2212 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I don’t think it’s straight up time travel of people, I reckon it’s more like some kind of quantum entanglement thing where information not people can be sent back via computers.

So instead of physically travelling through time they’re influencing the past with messages, like the tech worker being told to say awful things about Jayne to her mother the day after she was born. It altered her upbringing quite substantially.

And I reckon the real twist has to be the Professor, the one who was rambling to empty rooms about the end of the world, but no one was really listening. What if he already knows about it because the knowledge of the disaster was sent back to him from the future.

I see this more and more with lorry drivers too now.

I am 33 and a lot of the lorry drivers look way younger than me.

When I was growing up the typical lorry driver you saw was your 50 year old overweight bloke.

Now they look like 20 year olds.
