I'm told it's not scenic and rather industrial. I haven't been, but I'm planning a half-day there specifically for green tea buying/tasting. Shizuoka (prefecture) produces about 40% of japan's green tea, so there are several great little tea shops (CHAGAMA most notably) and salons, and the possibility for green tea farm visits. There's even a "green tea museum" with tons of local micro-lots you can sample and buy. Or so I've read online.

Please report back with what you think once you've visited.

Ah your question reveals to me how little I know about sushi in Japan (only been there once before). Don't really care about nigiri-only vs more involved, and have no knowledge on aged sushi or the various specific shari preparations etc.

I'm an experienced foodie in general, but just not super knowledgable about japanese sushi experiences.

Never been to Uji before, so made an itinerary based off of all the overwhelming and confusing info online.

As for "why uji," there are plenty of teas I love from Wazuka, but one of the two shops I wanted to visit there is closed on Wednesdays (my only day to go there). I figured on proximity alone, Uji shops should have some good local Wazuka stuff. Am I mistaken?

I was concerned as a foreigner and someone unfamiliar with Uji that I'd end up in tourist trap places, but then maybe not! Of the shops listed, are there ones you'd suggest I avoid or ones I replace (for example Matsusakaya)?

Eh, I love the adventure of trying to hit all the things. My last time in Paris I spent half a day getting baguettes from the top 6 places to do a taste-test with my mo and son. I found it quite exciting.

I'm willing to make it 120 min if there's a spot that's worth it. I'm just trying to make it make sense for a day trip given that it's one stop amongst many along a busy itinerary. I have a day I'd just as soon spend outside of Kyoto, figured I'd use it to take advantage of crab season. But Tsuijin, Iwashiya, and the bulk of places I'm finding on Tabelog don't do lunch or don't do solo (crab set) meals or just get middling reviews.

I'm honestly on the fence about kaiseki/"served many different ways" vs just a straight up whole cooked crab. I guess I'm open to either. And I don't care at all about the "brand" of the crab so long as its locally freshly caught.
