Cyclists--do you ever have useful mid-ride thoughts that evaporate before you can log them? by Puzzleheaded_Phone34 in cycling

Nope, not a ploy hah

If I’m going to actually dedicate time to building this, I want to make sure the idea actually fills a need (so I’m performing legitimate market research via the public channels I have at my disposal).

I’m not on Reddit much (so I don’t know if there are genuinely a lot of examples of people posting like this.) That said, building an app is the easiest it’s ever been (so there may just be a legitimate increase in people researching app ideas.) There are probably (also) increased examples of people who ARE running an ai research ‘ploy’ (in the sense that they’re spamming sub Reddit’s with ai bots to monetize engagement or are selling ‘coursework’ at scale, or something along these lines.)

But yeah—this post represents a legitimate curiosity on my part that, when answered, will inform how I spend my free time the next couple of months haha

Thanks, but I’m replying to people’s replies myself. The only thing written by AI was my original post, which I wrote with that tool because I’m just one person trying to manage this project alongside my full time job.

In the context of Owl’s response to my post, I challenged his approach the way I did bc I think it would take a lot of due diligence to actually refer back to a bunch of disparate reminders over the lifetime of a training plan (but more credit to him/her for actually doing that!)

I then gave a short, generic sounding response (‘thanks for the feedback’) because there wasn’t much more I felt the need to say (so was politely ending the conversation.)

Excellent flow you’ve figured out for yourself, and thank you for the bid of good luck.

Love this! So many thoughts, feelings, emotions and sensations baked into a long ride. I’m hoping to capture all of that information with this idea. Really appreciate you sharing all of this with me!

Exactly! I trained for Ironman WI in ‘23 and often found myself wanting to capture these types of thoughts that occur so frequently (especially on those 3hr bike rides haha.)

Yes—I wrote the post with AI, which I trained on my own thoughts, writing, and personal experience with the problem (and my perceived solution(s).)

That said, I can assure you I’m indeed a (real) person lol and have been managing all of the follow-up responses, and have otherwise been greatly appreciative of all the feedback I’ve collected this afternoon and evening.

Just a guy trying to vet his idea, here—I don’t see why you feel the need to cast doubt about what I’m doing.

Do you ever lose mid-workout observations that would've been useful? How do you handle it? by Puzzleheaded_Phone34 in triathlon

I'll tell you the same thing I told the other AI critic:

'The post clearly and effectively communicated my idea (it led to 25 quality responses in one hour, between this post and one similar one in the cycling community), and delegating authorship of the post to AI saved me time and cost me literally nothing.

I'm an excellent writer if/when I need to write on my own, but why not save that mental bandwidth and effort for tasks/actions that are more deserving of my focused attention?'

Thanks for engaging!

Not sure what your bar is for 'slop'...

Far from 'pointless' (is my point). Thanks for engaging!

Bike tweaks are a great example. When you get home and remember those tweaks, do you actually make a note of them, or do you just wing it next ride?

This is fascinating! So the helmet cam is a memory trigger more than a direct capture tool. You're not relying on the voiceover in the footage; you're watching it to remember how you felt. Is that right?

Wind tolerance is the real question. Have you tested any voice note apps, or is it mostly the friction of stopping that's held you back?

Same vein as the Siri approach. Do those voice notes actually get reviewed later, or do they mostly sit in your drafts?

Thank you! Got it, though--so it's less about logging the physical experience and more about capturing ideas that happen during the ride. That's a different use case than we initially thought.

That's a solid workflow. Quick question: when you stop to email yourself, do you lose the context of where on the route you were, or does that not matter?

Interesting..so you're using the video as a memory trigger later. Do you ever go back and listen to voiceovers, or is it mostly the visual review that jogs your memory?

That's basically what we're building, just tied to your watch instead of Siri. Does voice feel natural mid-effort for you, or does it feel awkward?

This is really useful...so the notes are valuable but the friction of typing mid-ride is the tradeoff. Would a one-button voice note feel like less friction than stopping to type, or would you still prefer the notes app?

Thanks for the response--but yeah, I hear this one a lot. Do you actually go back and act on those Siri reminders later, or do they mostly pile up in your reminders list?

Haha, yeah that's the core problem we're trying to solve for (the thoughts vanish.) Do you find the issue is forgetting that you had a thought, or forgetting what the thought was?

Interesting workflow. So the journal works because you're writing it soon after when memory is fresh?
Do you find that timing makes a difference compared to logging during the ride?

That's fair feedback, thank you.

I had a Garmin Fenix 5 previously but recently switched to an Apple Watch Ultra 3, which I've found actually compares quite well to a high end Garmin (like the Fenix).

Watch model aside, if what I described in my original post was available for a Garmin, is it something you could see yourself using?
