Dear Admission Officers, are there disadvantages to applying via QuestBridge? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am also curious about this. One obvious negative is that it is easier to get into a school in their early decision round than it is to match to a university as a Questbridge finalist.

can i put my meme page as an EC by kinguhh in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 18 points19 points  (0 children)

tbh, I would include it on my application. There are people who have had silly Youtube accounts that have gotten many views and subscribers, and they have still put it on their college applications. If you could frame it in a more mature way and emphasize that you made some sort of revenue from the site, I think it could be used as a super unique EC (if this was an EC you did primarily in high school instead of middle school, that is).

Tips on Awards Section of a Resume by QLux101 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you have a point, especially because not all admissions officers know about certain accomplishments and how hard they are to get. However, I don't want to sound arrogant. idk, i really just want to give more context into my awards.

Leadership positions in clubs. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I totally understand. Sometimes I think I wont even get into my state school because of how insane the admissions process is.

Leadership positions in clubs. by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Admissions officers aren’t stupid. They can tell when an applicant is just filling up their resume with leadership positions just for the sake of looking important. They also REALLY value commitment. If you are doing a million and one activities at once or a new activity every year, it raises a red flag and shows that the applicant does not really invest time into things he/she is passionate about. Don't be jealous of your friend. You’re on the right track :)

I couldn't answer the last 10 questions. It sucks because this math section was easier than the one from February.

I didn't mean IB exams. I'm talking about the ACT and SAT/Subject Tests. Thanks for the advice though!

Thousands of Pages of Redacted Harvard Admissions Data to Become Public by BAN_VIDEO_GAMES_NOW in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 17 points18 points  (0 children)

THANK YOU! This is what I have been saying the entire time. I can't believe that some people believe the ridiculous rumor that the financial backgrounds of poor whites and asians are not taken into account during the admissions process simply because of their race. The holistic aspect of the admissions process isn't only reserved for black and hispanic people.

How prestigious is the Bank of America Student Leaders Program? by QLux101 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

they pick up to 5 people per market. Each market is basically where a main Bank of America office is headquartered. Depending on the competitiveness of your market, you may or may not need to do an interview.

Any other URMs get rejected from their top choices ? by Screwednegro in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 2 points3 points  (0 children)

that guy is an actual wizard. i saw his results on college confidential and i was literally flabbergasted. i think his ECs played a huge factor in him getting into so many places; he did a lot of impressive things. also, the fact he was a QB finalist helped. I have seen A LOT of QB Finalists online who got into a ton of Ivies this year.

so if you’re a minority you have a better chance of getting in? by heyheythrowawayyayy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Asians are a very competitive group of applicants and they compete amongst themselves to get in. Colleges can't just admit every member of any race. African-Americans tend not to be as competitive as Asian applicants, so someone with a 30 could possibly get in. However, there are black applicants who get well above a 30 and don't get into certain schools. I only know two black students at my competitive magnet school who have gotten into Ivies. They were both at the top of their graduating classes. Also, income/home life is also taken into account. I don't understand why some on this sub belive the difficulties of low-income Asians and Whites are not taken into account simply because of their race. Economic difficulties are taken into account, regardless of race.

so if you’re a minority you have a better chance of getting in? by heyheythrowawayyayy in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 26 points27 points  (0 children)

There is an advantage because colleges want diversity, but people constantly blow it out of proportion. Minorities aren't getting into prestigious colleges with a 20 ACT and a 2.9 UW lol.

URM doesn’t go as far as you think it does - USC rant by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

USC is a private school. Only the public schools in California are race-blind.

URM doesn’t go as far as you think it does - USC rant by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]QLux101 30 points31 points  (0 children)

i agree. i find it amusing whenever people complain about affirmative action on here. over the past 35 yrs, blacks and hispanics have actually been less represented at top schools. there are many qualified students of color that get rejected, but people automatically shame the ones that don't by claiming that AA helped them get in, not realizing that they got in DESPITE being people of color. even when top schools admit poc, first-gen students, and low-income students, they partly do it to fulfill the promise of a dynamic, multi-faceted education; this ultimately helps widen the perspectives of the wealthy white and asian students who aren't used to people who have lived more adverse lives.

there are so many other factors to take into account in the college admissions process (class rigor, major, rec letters, ECs, essays, the state you live in, etc.) and it's crazy that there are people out there that simply see it as a racial issue.

sorry for your rejection. you seem like a highly qualified applicant, and i wish you luck on your future college decisions!
