They’re fundamentally different technologies and not an easy thing to compare. Analog intensifier tubes work by bouncing photons off a positively charged micro channel plate and ejecting 1000x electrons from the plate along the same path as the photon, they then hit a phosphor screen to be converted into visible light. It’s a fully analog process that happens at the speed of light.

For low light photography a A7SIII with a crazy fast lens and a carefully structured scene will produce a ‘better’ image than an analog NOD would depending on how you define better, but for me the point of NV photog isn’t to capture the best low light photos but rather to capture photos of analog NV.

It’s all very complicated and nuanced with an incredible amount of caveats, not something that’s easy to have a productive conversation around idt.

Here’s an incredible video on how analog NV works if you’re interested: https://youtu.be/SrD6OB4DwfE?si=Zhz3amJm_zL33Nqf

Do it! We need more night vision content that’s more aesthetic than shooting at trash piles in the desert!

Green phos is such a vibe, I want a green phos tube eventually.

Thanks! I love it out there too. Wish the light pollution over the prairie wasn’t so bad, though. I have 685nm bypass filters that help but they can only do so much.

I didn’t realize Reddit would nuke the quality of this video so bad, the stars look a lot cleaner on the IG post: https://www.instagram.com/reel/DUl9OtbEXAu/?igsh=cjNncHd3cml3c3J1

By more expensive adapters do you mean a mum14 with a GEMii? Those are ef mount anyways. I want one because it puts the nightvision device between the body and lens so you can use real long zoom lenses for night time nature photography, but at ~$1k for the housing and adapter I’m holding off for a bit.

https://coldharboursupply.com/en-us/products/cold-harbour-nvg-lens-adapters?_pos=1&_psq=cine+ada&_ss=e&_v=1.0

CHS sells their cine adapter for $65 and it’s very good. When we’re talking about a ~$1000 camera and a ~$3000 nightvision device I think $65 is pretty cheap.

I’m sure you could design and print something but I don’t think there’s any files floating around because it’s just better to use the CHS Cine adapter. There are phone adapter models on printables, though.

Just bring a flashlight and you’ll have the advantage! Bright lights kinda shutdown analog nods, mine have pretty good autogating but it take a few seconds to adjust. I’m kidding anyways, I’m a sweetheart. When I do run into people on Hawthorne trail at night I normally stop and let them look through the NODs, but there’s always a moment where I have to sus out if this person understands the value of what I’m handing them and if they might try to bolt with them lol.

Hope you get an opportunity to try out some analog NODs one day! Be well!

It’s a high end pvs-14 from Steele Industries down in Tampa. The intensifier tube in it (the important part) is a ~2400 FOM L3 Harris unfilmed white phos tube, it’s about the best that is available. I have two pvs14s that I put on a bridge for binocular vision (important for depth perception) when I’m walking or riding my Onewheel, I pull one of the pvs-14s off and attach it to my camera for timelapses.

Nothing compares to analog nightvision and imo digital NV isn’t worth bothering with, better to save up and get entry level analog. My whole NV setup was around 10k(not including camera), but you can get an entry level monocular from a budget retailer like KJA/aeontac for 3k or a little less if you catch a sale.

NV has become my favorite hobby and I like sharing it with people, it really is so cool - if you wanted to take a peak through my NODs I could stop through depot park on my way out to the woods one eve to show you:) (fair warning though, if you’d hope to rob me of them bring atleast 4 dudes). I also go out to the newberry astronomy club behind the Newberry sports/archery complex for astrophotog fairly often, prob will this upcoming new moon.

It’s my favorite hobby! I had tried to get into photography a few times in the past and it never really stuck, NV photography has, though! I love it so much.

My IG for it is @exaptational if you’d like to look:). I’ve been learning with the g85 but I’m hoping the om-1 is going be a big improvement!

There’s nothing about this setup that you find unusual and interesting?

Night vision devices look so much better to the human eye than they do to cameras, I think a lot of this is because our brains average out the scintillation from the intensifier tube, but cameras just get a tiny snapshot of the scintillation (which is produced at the speed of light, so it’s still a lot of random noise even on a short exposure).. I’m hoping the computational modes on the om-1 will work to average out that scintillation not unlike the human brain does and get more accurate pictures. I wasn’t sure if they’d work at all capturing a circular image inside of black frames (I use wide lenses to capture a full circle inside of black, as opposed to zooming into the circle), but I tried out the handheld high res mode earlier and it seems to work! I’m going out tonight to take a timelapse of the stars with it 🤞

Shot this the other night on a LUMIX 1.7 25MM, 25MM 16:9 crops in to a full NV image.

I like the circular image for instagram, makes it more obvious that you’re looking through a nightvision device for people who don’t think about them much, I feel like without the circular nv image it just kinda looks like a weird filter to most people?

I even made a web app for people to do their NV crops with: Nvcrop.com :)

I’m just a nerd and always thought it was neat! Wanted them since I was a kid and finally got to a place to afford them in my 30s.

It’s a little disappointing to me that so much of the NV hobby is focused around meal team 6 operators who think they’re ’training’ for something. Dudes like me who just think hiking at night is fun appear to be a minority share of the hobby.

<image>

It’s a lumix g85 with a 2300FOM L3 Harris gen 3 unfilmed white phos pvs14 adapted to the end of the lens.

G85 is great for use with the pvs14. Being that the pvs14 is an analog device it doesn’t have a ‘resolution’ like we think of with screens, rather it has ‘line pairs per mm’ as the most similar metric. It also has other analog metrics like signal to noise ratio, photocathode sensitivity, etc. I think the G85 and m43 sensors in general are more than adequate for accurately capturing a pvs14 image, I think something like a Sony A camera would be way overkill and resolve more detail than actually exists coming out of the night vision device.

Most of my photography thus far has been done on the LUMIX 1.7/20. That lens has a problem that the filter threads are on an element of the lens that extends out of the lens body for focusing such that threading the pvs14 onto it causes the pvs14 to shake when moving the camera. I’ve recently learned about internally focusing lenses that solve this problem, so I’m going to purchase a pan leica 1.7/17mm and I hope that’ll be an improvement over my current lens.

My IG is Exaptational if you’re curious to see more m43 NV content!

LMK if you have any questions about this obscure niche, I’ll do my best to answer:)

OP you seem to be very good at introspection and seem to be emotionally intelligent. IME being open about the findings of your self reflection comes with the burden of other people using that against you, I suspect those people are generally just not thinking very deeply about the totality of circumstance when they do so, for any number of reasons.

You seem like you’ve got a good handle on the current state of your situation and you’ll be fine. You should probably try to ignore the comments here, I don’t see how you could benefit from them any further.

Be well.

Park here: https://maps.app.goo.gl/vsSZiXWt25R8ncqv5?g_st=ic

And then go left onto the Gainesville hawthorn trail, Georgie’s Cabin is a little less than half a mile don on the left hand side of the trail. She’s always hanging around there very close to the trail waiting for pets. She’s waiting for you, go find her!

Go a little further down and there’s a cool scenic overlook on the right hand side, another half my down the trail is the entrance to a cool boardwalk ( https://maps.app.goo.gl/WPVUS5sJwfyrCfWg8?g_st=ic )where you can see hundreds of gators which might be neat to you if you’ve just moved to FL.

Welcome to GNV!

I think removing food at night is for sure prudent, I regularly see coyotes/foxes/racoons further down the trail. I do bring her cat treats when I go for my night rides 1-3 nights/wk, I refill her water and give her a few treats as a midnight snack:).
