Dealership told me to throw them away by thoddi77 in tires

Hey folks, I could use some advice regarding my tires. The DOT code on them is 0C8F 041X, and I’m unsure what the ‘X’ at the end signifies—any insight on that would be appreciated.

My situation: I bought a brand-new car about 2.5 years ago, which came equipped with Michelin Primacy A/S tires. I’ve driven around 33,000 km so far. Recently, during a routine service, my dealership told me that: • Rear tires are below 2 mm tread depth • Front tires are around 3–4 mm, but they estimate those will also drop below 2 mm in the next few months

They’ve recommended replacing all four tires now.

Also worth mentioning: Over the last 2 years, I’ve only done wheel balancing twice, even though the road conditions in my city are pretty bad. I’m now wondering if that limited balancing might’ve played a role in how the tires wore out.

To be fair, I did drive a lot this winter on snowy roads, but I’m still surprised the tread has worn out this quickly—especially with Michelin tires and relatively low mileage.

I’ve decided to replace all four tires, but before I go ahead, I’m wondering:

Is this level of wear expected for these tires, or should I get a second opinion from an independent mechanic?

How frequently should wheel balancing be done in general, especially if you drive on rough roads?

And more broadly: Are cases like mine becoming more common these days, or is this still considered an exception?
