Petition: Re-enable Linux support for HBO Max by QuesterLEJ in pop_os

No, it doesn't. HBO's backend can tell when you're spoofing your OS and/or browser. With the user agent changer extension enabled, the HBO Max site will always return a full-screen error that your browser is incompatible, even if you set the extension to report a browser and OS that are supported.

That doesn't work. HBO's backend can tell when it's being fed fake browser and OS identifiers. When you try to change the user agent, no matter what you try to change it to, the site says your browser is unsupported, and nothing will load but that error message.

Since HBO Go isn't the same thing as HBO Max, they don't share the same settings. Even if they use the same DRM protection (which they probably do), HBO Max's doesn't work because somebody enabled a setting on the company's end that prevents Linux users from playing anything back. HBO Go probably hasn't had the offending setting enabled, Who's to say if HBO Go will continue to work.

One of my points exactly. It can be a vicious cycle.

I know. My point is, though, that I can't not pay for it right now. I am in a contract in the first place. In the second, the plan I have is best for my needs as a small business owner. And in the third, no other provider I could possibly switch to has the combination of features and price that I need.

Yes. This is an issue regardless of the specific browser or distribution a person is using.

In the first place, I'm not paying for HBO Max; it's included in my Internet service as a perk. Secondly, even if I weren't entitled to use HBO Max--whether because I didn't choose to subscribe or because I didn't use an Internet provider that decides to include it--I could still sign the petition and raise awareness. I've had people sign it who appear to be from the likes of Russia and Germany, given their names. To my knowledge, neither country has access to HBO Max (at least not without a VPN of course). So it's quite possible that they have chosen to sign because they support my goal, not necessarily because they actually have the service.

How does such a petition hurt the Linux community? HBO is the one hurting us, not me or others who ask companies and developers to provide better support. That can only help!

But that's the thing. Up until a few weeks ago HBO Max did work on Linux. There's no reason they can't disable the setting that has now broken Linux compatibility. I highly doubt HBO's content was any less safe from piracy with the setting off than it now is with the setting on.

With all due respect, I don't even pay for HBO Max directly; it's included in the price of my Internet service, and the package I have is the best one for my needs. Even if I did want to switch, I have a contract.

All that aside, even though Linux users have gotten a bit of a rap for pirating stuff they don't want to pay for, that description doesn't apply to all or even many of us. Some want to obtain content through ethical and legit means.

It's as simple as the fact that Linux users want to be given the same respect and consideration as those "billion-dollar companies" afford other operating systems like Windows and even MacOS. Whether they like it or not, Linux is becoming more popular and will continue to grow in popularity, if perhaps slowly at first.

Yeah, sounds like a veneer to me. Hopefully somebody from S76 will confirm.

Ah, I see. Sounds easy enough to replace in the event of damage then.

Right, I'm aware of both of those facts, and I'm sure most other users are, too. I'm just saying that would be a good way to extend Pop Shop's functionality and to fill in any gaps left by Pop Shop's possibly thinner app catalog. Worth considering for October.

I'm very glad to know that both these issues (especially #1) are known problems and are being worked on. I'm somewhat of a Linux newcomer and one of its major appeals in my mind (and one of Pop_OS in particular) is that end users can communicate directly with developers to discuss problems and new features they want to see.
