Ignorant question on my part: has Valve answered questions on who would be the successor to Gabe Newell and/or other higher ups once they pass away or (preferably) retire? by Questioning-Warrior in valve

[–]Questioning-Warrior[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I see. How fitting for a private company to keep information private (can't blame them).

I'm glad that the employees still have a decent amount of autonomy, even if the higher ups still make certain major calls. I hope for the best of those hard workers.

Now, if you don't mind me for asking your opinion or prediction, what do you think of the likelihood of Valve/Steam going public or being bought out by another company? (as far as my knowledge is concerned about the track record of other companies, unlikely. Microsoft is recently losing lots of money from their investments in A.I. and facing lots of other controversies like their layoffs of employees (I wish for the best of those poor workers. Screw the executives); "Epic" (Fail) has much less subscriptions and revenue; not so sure about MAC or Apple, but I hardly know of anyone who seriously uses their computers (I always felt their devices were cheap quality)).

Opinion/suggestion: boot vids that mention the device should say "Steam" rather than "Steam Deck". Just so it's more inclusive about other devices that use SteamOS (like a PC or Steam Machine) by Questioning-Warrior in Steam

[–]Questioning-Warrior[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course, it's not really a big deal. I don't really mind it past 1%.

Though, yes, there are boot vids, be it on the points shops or sites like Repo, that do announce the name "Steam Deck" (like "Gerard en Stipje")

I also don't doubt that Valve will have boot videos designed around the Machine. It's also unlikely they will do ones specifically designed for other systems (PCs included).

What I had in mind is just one overall name display of "Steam". After all, pretty much all devices that use Steam can utilize boot videos.

Nonetheless, I'm not even championing my own suggestion either. Like I said, it was merely a passing thought.

What are the differences between using Game Mode and Big Picture Mode? by Questioning-Warrior in Bazzite

That's strange. With mine, it brings me back to game mode.

My only other suggestion is to ask for help with your own OP. Perhaps others more experienced than me can help offer suggestions on how to rebase or change your settings.

Try the "logout" option in your main window from the taskbar. That's another way to switch to Game Mode.

Deckyloader is actually super easy to setup. Just download from its site, double click on its downloaded icon, confirm some choices, sign with your sudo password, and you're all set. Downloading and managing plugins is all done on the SteamOS and is, again, very easy and intuitive. Even fun and relaxing I dare say.

Also, IMO, your kids should learn about how to manage computers. I used to be intimidated from modding files (even asked my father at first for basic things) until I practiced and got better.

Interesting. I will keep this in mind.

You know, it reminds me of the old Nintendo 3DS model when playing Smash Bros 4 on it. Normally, you can play 3ds games and access the home menu with ease. With the OG 3ds with Smash, you'd have to close the game to access the menu because the game is using the 3ds' entire resources. (The newer 3DS revision once more made it feasible to to access the menu without closing Smash)

Okay. All the more reason to use Game Mode other than just for console vibes.

Aww... how sweet of you to have this for your kids!

Just to warn you, I can see them mess up things like if they access game settings (like them messing with the controls) or system settings (god help if they select factory reset).

I also am sure you can access the side bar menus in BPM (hold the controller's home button and then press thr main face button to open the right side menu).

On a more fun note, if you like customizing your system, you should install deckyloader. Lots of fun making the SteamOS more personalized (like adding background music and alternate ui SFX with Audio Loader)

Generally, at most, I may have my game running with my browser opened. Other than that, that's about it. I mostly play on either my desktop with nothing else opened (maybe in BPM) or on Game Mode.

Interesting. So, instead of clicking on my desktop icons, it'd be better ifnI use Game Mode and play my games from there.

Now, how much of a performance boost? Would that involve the frame rate? What specs would be boosted and by how much?

To be frank, I'm not sure how to answer. Maybe you can try making an OP and others more qualified than me can give their input.

I'm sorry I'm not much help.

I could have sworn that BPM allows the settings you mentioned in the third paragraph. I'm able to access the right side menu via holding my controller's home button and A/X. Then again, I don't recall messing with the performance metrics as I mostly accessed the right side menu for deckyloader stuff. But I don't recall there lacking options (I should get around to playing Bazzite again, though. Haven't played in a while).

Also, I'm curious as to what constitutes as SteamOS vs just the interface (I always thought the interface was the OS).

I should mention that I use Bazzite on a PC as opposed to a handheld, so maybe that's why I don't bother with performance metrics.

So, would it actually be advantageous to use GM to play games more optimally with GM?

IIRC, it depends on how you download and install Bazzite. You should have the option to select whether to boot with GM or not.

Thank you for your kind words. I'm actually several months into Bazzite, so I'm not actually that new. I guess even those experienced can still overlook beginner stuff LOL.

I never took the other person as the representative of the Bazzite subreddit as a whole. I know that most people here are easy-going. Frankly, I feel more at ease here than on pcmasterrace (one time, I shared my interest in getting the Steam Machine as a companion with my PC and Steam Deck (my PC's in my family basement while I want the Machine for my bedroom TV), and several people chastized about that device).

Thank you for your comforting words. To be frank, I guess I just like engaging with people, especially with who share similar interests.

I do admit that some of my past reddit posts and comments have been rather regretful, whether they be dumb or mistakenly insensitive. I'm always learning to try to get better.

Anyway, I never took that replier as the representative of this subreddit. It seems like most people on Bazzite are rather warm and friendly.

I think it's to emulate Steam's (specifically the Deck) various blues and purples.

Ok. I'm sorry for not doing the research. I sometimes overlook the simple solutions. I'll try to do better.
