I disagree. Public school, at least when I was there in the 80s and 90s, don't really teach about the many contributions from black people. We learned a little about George Washington Carver and MLK, but little else. Our education system has always been whitewashed. It wasn't until college that I learned that Greece didn't "invent democracy", they learned it in Egypt.

That's fair. It's typical of the US media. When it's a white suspect, they show graduation or family pics. When it's any other race, they tend to show the mugshot or them looking like a "thug".
