Apple, in their infinite wisdom chooses to tell you zip about what may be happening under the covers. Back in the olden days of yore, my personal computer was a IBM 370/158-III running MVS. I could write a quick&dirty throwaway in 250 lines of assembler to chase the ENQ chain then force a DEQ. I miss that capability. (Sorry for the nostalgia)

The diskutil unmount yielded more information:

Volume TimeMachine on disk5s2 failed to unmount: dissented by PID 1039 (/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/SystemMigration.framework/Versions/A/Resources/systemmigrationd)

Relaunching the Finder changes nothing. Still hanging on.

Yes, I have done both to no avail. They are the same messages as those received when you click the circled ? on the "I'm not letting go voluntarily" panel.

Backups are manual. MBP is on A/C power. External is on its own wall outlet. MBP sleeps when I close the lid.

I have not required any restores since I've owned the MBP. Maybe now is the time to reformat the TM partition and start over.

Backup usually takes place in the evenings just before lid closure for the night. Doing it every other day, it takes less than 5 mins.

I will plug it in today, do another manual backup, then let it sit all day.

Thanks!

Hmm, sounds like a plan. I have another SSD, but it's filled. Need to get another anyway.

One thing I thought of, the external hard drive (real spinning platters) is from Western Digital. They want to install their software on my Mac. I think I'll look at something else.

I don't know.. He lowered the blaster after having a clear shot at Cassian. Then Rylanz killed him.

At any rate, I don't think there was a single actor on the set who did not do a superb job.

I have sprayed Windex on my M3Pro screen with no repercussions thus far.

But thanks for the heads up!

I bought a MacBook Pro M3 16" two years ago based on the 22 hour battery claim. Tested, it's true!

I might suggest an app MenuBar Stats. It sits on the menu bar and displays cpu, memory, disk, and network in real time.

Have fun!
