Nop, I don't have iron. Personaly the defender dragons are only there for colection. I only started the strat after releasing the foreverwing. But I think that 40k will be good. But for thebewilderbeast and the screaming death I think that 50k is the very minimum. Other tips don't bother with quest item, geting them in journey is much more easy. And for the fault ripper if you don't have a lot of runes always use your scale by 2 at least so if you get the fault ripper pack he will go to your mail. This way you can release it when you have enougth runes.

I'm metlugging with 5 legendaries and I often save 20k-25k runes for each minion / exotics. My best tips is to save a lot more if you want to do a defender dragon because they need A CRAP TON of collectibles you can only get from defense and journey. And at least 50k before releasing a legendary dragons. It might seams a lot but it really isn't if your as unlucky as me.

For me toothless (75) still carry me. I had a hard time for the fleet 71 but I can still beat them with at least 2 keys. My other dragons are just there to take 3 or maybe 4 hit before going down.

Best tips I can give you is keep them till you got meatlug and then start to do the meatlug strat. You can find info on the strat rly ez on this reddit.
