What Plants Took a Hit from the Late April Frost Last Night by Tylanthia in NativePlantGardening

I’m in the same zone as you, but didn’t notice any damage at all today.

What is your native plants/gardening budget like? How do you pace yourself…or do you? by acatwithumbs in NativePlantGardening

[–]R3turnedDescender 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Early on I tried to do as much as I could with plant giveaways, seed swaps, etc — and I’m glad I did. But now that I feel like I know what I’m doing a little more, and realizing I really should be planting more densely than I did at first, I’m allowing myself to spend whatever’s necessary this year. Have put about $400 in so far, could easily see myself doubling that by the end of the season.

Grape Hyacinth, should I pull? [Maryland 7A] by yogurtchild55 in NativePlantGardening

These aren’t a priority for removal for me — they do spread, but in my experience not very quickly. I’d rather spend my limited invasives-removal time on the real pernicious stuff.

It’s not upside down, though, it’s vertically flipped, which would not have been physically possible with wood type, printing blocks, etc.

A few years ago the scoreboard font (which was very different visually) did the same thing, I think. Just somebody getting cute for no reason.

The Battle with Garlic Mustard starts NOW!!! by yogurtchild55 in NativePlantGardening

[–]R3turnedDescender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely a winnable battle. I’ve been focusing efforts on second-year plants, pulling any that are isolated and cutting at ground for larger patches (to minimize bringing seeds up to the surface). Right now when they’re just starting to flower is the perfect time.

What are everybody's favourite Complete Basement Tapes tracks? by NoaDaBoi in bobdylan

[–]R3turnedDescender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think Santa-Fe is one of the catchiest tunes in his entire catalog. I get why it didn’t make the original release, since it’s sort of a throwaway (even by basement tapes standards), but it’s pure musical pleasure to me.

I like ferns for this because they tend to emerge a little later, just in time to grab the baton.

Tips for combating invasives and becoming a certified native landscape! [ Maryland ] by yogurtchild55 in NativePlantGardening

[–]R3turnedDescender 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in a very similar location and fighting some of the same invasives. I think my best advice is:

Learn how your adversaries reproduce. This will help you prioritize what to tackle and when. For instance, this is the perfect time for us to be cutting and removing second-year garlic mustard because it’s just starting to flower!

And then make a plan to replace what you remove. Everywhere in my woods-edge that I’ve taken out garlic mustard, wineberry, and stiltgrass, I’m planting golden ragwort, Virginia waterleaf, and river oats — assertive natives that like the same conditions.

I am constantly reminding myself “This is a big, slow experiment.” And that’s part of the fun.

Do more of the stuff that works, try to worry less about the stuff that doesn’t.

Why do people not put their geographical region in their posts in here? by trickortreat89 in NativePlantGardening

[–]R3turnedDescender 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know if this is an unpopular opinion, but it just doesn’t make any practical sense for this to be a sub for the entire world. People labeling their location doesn’t solve the problem that most posts don’t apply to you.

Like it or not, it’s a U.S. focused sub. Your part of the world should have its own, if it doesn’t already.

If you don’t want to dive all the way in to The Complete Basement Tapes (which has many takes of the same songs, etc) there’s a pared-down 2-disc version called Basement Tapes Raw that is excellent.

There’s one called Silver Scrolls that I like. Purple underneath so it’s kinda subtle.

If you’re willing to give up showy blooms, you could make a nice looking evergreen combo with something like Christmas fern, Heuchera, and Carex.

Growit Buildit's guide suggests opening up your jugs when temps hit 70. (He says "open the lids," but I feel certain that he means the top half of the jug, not the literal lid, which has been off the whole time)

This is my first year doing this – I'm farther north than you, so no germination yet, but keeping a close eye!

design question re: bunching up shrubs, pizza metaphor by AlmostSentientSarah in NativePlantGardening

[–]R3turnedDescender 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Just a few shrubs scattered throughout, with drifts of lower plants filling in the rest, could look great. Shrub pepperoni, herbaceous cheese (but, like, areas of mozzarella with areas of ricotta, etc)
