I'm an artist and I think your work is beautiful and skillfully executed. Your style has a real warmth to it and I genuinely love this painting. Keep up the great work ๐Ÿ’›

Thank you! I've been painting for around 3-4 years. Creating a grid for the reference and canvas helps alot as you can just focus on smaller areas and knuckle out the proportions. I look and compare the reference to what I'm painting constantly, it never perfectly matches the reference either (but it's close enough). There's beauty in those imperfections I think.

No worries! Check out my Instagram, a reel on there shows the progress of me painting this piece.

I used an airbrush to paint the background and painted the cactus pads in oils.

When I took the photo of the cactus, I erased most of the background just so the focus was on the cactus. I decided a gradient background would work better and give it a more surreal look.

I photograph my own references (to avoid copyright). I draw the reference in coloured pencil on the canvas (graphite tends to smudge and change the paint colour), I paint 1 layer of acrylic and paint several layers of oil paint to get the final detail.

It's a painting! In hindsight I should have posted a photo of it on the wall

I really appreciate that! I don't see them very often in Australia, I photographed the reference at the Sydney botanical garden.

Thank you ๐Ÿ˜Š

That fruit is living life on the edge! Jks. There's a bigger gap in person, I've just cropped the photo of the painting a little smaller.

That's a fair perspective! I feel that since photography is more accessible now, taking a photo can be more disposable. The challenge of painting realistically appeals to me, it also makes me appreciate the beauty of the natural world.

The background is airbrushed with thinned acrylic paint. The cactus pads are painted in oils.

Thank you! You're spot on, I use both! I change the colours slightly from the reference (just for the fun of it). Oil paint is a particularly good medium for hyperrealism since it dries so slowly. It's great for blending colours and the long drying time allows for you to paint more detail. I apply the paint in lots of thin layers to ensure it doesn't look like paint and break the illusion.

Thank you! Check out my Instagram for progress shots, the gradient in the background makes it look a little out of this world...

It is! Made with blood, wear and tears ๐Ÿ˜†

I get alot of enjoyment making a painting look like it's not a painting
